MBA from IIT

His dream was to become a good manager and decided to attend IIM, but fell short and landed in IIT MBA. He’s not fond of programming, even though his background was in IT. He spent 15 months to find a good coaching center like NIIT, Aptech, ..that will teach him programming. “Mangers don’t write code” as his usual response. He did certainly know how to print “Hello World”

Like everyone else came to land of opportunity and freedom. I have asked him to write about MBA experience in India and how M.S. in Finance have changed the perspective towards his life and education. If you have any questions about MBA and M.S. in Finance, job opportunities and courses,.. write a comment to this article and he will be glad to include the answers in his article.

But he needs your Help

Following is an email I received from him recently

Need advice :((((

There was this beautiful sweater I bought from India coz US is soo cold here and I happily washed it in the machine today…
It brings tears in my eyes to tell you the size to which it has shrunk…( This was never in any basic IQ book I ever came across in my life) and I spent 2000 bucks to learn this news.

And now I am 1 sweater down plus i have to geta new one…

If you have any knowledge about resuscitation please mail me

Thank you with a heart full of shrunken warmth

I’m not a big fan of University Rankings. But, readers of this blog and wants to use the ranking system to select universities. So, here’s the rankings for electrical Engineering. If you are looking for specific areas, like VLSI, Power Systems, Embedded Systems, Communication Engineering, I don’t have the list and you can certainly browse within specific schools.

If you are looking for some form of calculator, where you can enter GRE Score, Academics, TOEFL and hit submit and it will spit out good universities with scholarship, I can say one thing - stop searching for it. You are not going to find it. It doesn’t exists. Best way to find schools is through hard way, right way - spend time visiting each schools website and talk to current students.

If you think that’s time consuming, then if you end up selecting wrong school, without proper information, your life will be at huge risk, parents money, career, job search, … so I would do my research before applying to schools, not after getting admission. I guess you would also agree.

One of the blog reader, had admission from 2 universities. I asked him to go to University of Texas at Arlington, but he selected other school. Within one semester, he ended up getting transfer to a different school. I’m trying to make students (your) life bit easier.

I don’t agree to this university rankings, but got to provide what readers ask for. Following electrical engineering ranking list is the published by U.S. News for 2007.

We all know certainly having Doctorate will increase your income, but you must be willing to spend 4 to 5 years to get Doctorate degree. But, just having bachelor degree will get you less income. Here’s a research study by different groups and its indeed an interesting informative article.

Income Comparison

Bachelor’s Degree - Those with a bachelor’s degree, $2.1 million over a lifetime:

Master’s Degree - People with a master’s degree earn $2.5 million

Doctoral Degree - Persons with doctoral degrees earn an average of $3.4 million during their working life

Professional Degree - Those with MD or JD professional degrees (medicine, law) do best with an average of $4.4 million dollars in lifetime earnings

One of the article was Email Template to Contact Professors. One of the reader used the template and got positive response from the professors and shes wondering who to proceed next. Here’s her comment

Hey,
Thank you so much! that of course, I did and got favorable responses. I am a graduate student in India doing masters in Clinical Psychology. I plan to apply for the Fall 09 for masters in Psychology (clinical or counseling). Like i mentioned earlier, I have written to a couple of professors (only those with whose research interests matched with mine) and did receive encouraging responses. Now, I want to take it further and I am a little confused. My GRE scores aren’t great (860 total) so, I am very reluctant to tell them my GRE scores and then further the conversations along the path of needed financial aid. However, I have work experience in the field of mental health for almost a year (clinical and non clinical setting). I have one research paper presented in a national conference and in preparation to go in for a publication (either in a national or an international journal). My under graduation scores are good too (72% aggregate and 81% only in psychology). I am also getting them evaluated by WES.
So please let me know, if i stand a good chance in the following universities and also advise on how you think I should take it forward from here:
CSU, Fresno
CSU, Fullerton
University of West Georgia (most preferred)
Barry University
UT, Tyler
Chicago School of Professional Psychology
MTSU
Western Kentucky
Augusta University

I apologize for this really long email, but, I really am in a fix and need some direction. Please feel free to ask me any other information you think is required. At this point, let me tell you, like any other Indian student, there isn’t anything much I can really do without an aid or a TA/RA. Please help…

I will add my response to this article later today.

Princeton, N.J. (October 28, 2008) –

Educational Testing Service® (ETS®) today announced the introduction of a new GRE® Comparison Tool for Business Schools at its website www.ets.org/gre/comparison. The online tool offers business schools a way to predict Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) scores from Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE) General Test scores.

The comparison tool was developed in response to requests from business schools for information to help them evaluate applicants who submitted GRE scores for admission to MBA programs.

The predicted GMAT scores produced by the tool are calculated based on analyses of test scores from individuals who took both the GRE General Test and the GMAT exam under standard testing conditions between January 2006 and July 2008.

“The GRE and GMAT comparison tool will be very helpful to us,” explains David Bach, Associate Dean of MBA programs at Instituto de Empresa (IE) Business School. “The fact that it is accessible online makes the admissions review process easier, too.”

Based in Madrid, Spain, IE’s MBA program is ranked in the top ten worldwide by The Financial Times.

The launch of the GRE Comparison Tool for Business Schools comes at a time when an increasing number of business schools and MBA programs, both domestically and internationally, are accepting GRE General Test scores for graduate admission. More than 120 MBA programs now accept GRE General Test scores, including Stanford University, MIT, Clemson University, Johns Hopkins and IE Business School. Visit www.ets.org/gre/bschools to view a full list of MBA programs that accept GRE scores.

“As a top-ranked business school, we realize that we need to recruit the most excellent and diverse students,” says Bach. “The demand for a creative and diverse workforce comes directly from the professional business community that increasingly competes on a global level. Therefore, we have to be selective and focused on quality, and accept different tests and test formats, provided they are well-suited to select the best.”

“The tool is very easy to use,” explains ETS Associate Vice President David Payne. “The user enters an applicant’s GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores, and then views the applicant’s predicted GMAT Total score. The ability to predict a GMAT Total score from GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores is not surprising, given that both tests measure the verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning skills that business schools value, and the correlation between the GRE scores and the GMAT Total score is quite high.”

In 2009, ETS will launch the Personal Potential Index (PPI), which will provide an evaluation of critical personal attributes that graduate schools and business schools look for in candidates — attributes that traditional standardized tests weren’t intended to measure.

“The PPI will be particularly beneficial for business schools that historically place added value on individual leadership, team work and ethics,” adds Payne.

To learn more about the GRE General Test for graduate business and MBA programs, visit www.ets.org/gre/business.
