Average GRE Scores For Universities

by HSB on August 8, 2008

in GRE

Average GRE scores for U.S. Universities and graduate school is the most  common search term used by students trying to find universities to apply. I personally have gone through the university selection process and I know how tough is to select graduate school based on GRE test Score.

Average GRE Scores for Universities

It’s very hard to find the Average GRE Exam scores or minimum GRE scores required for admission for each department and college. But, there are certain key terms that can be searched for to find the scores required for admission and also the average gre scores for various departments.

GRE Scores – University List

I have started writing about Average GRE Scores for various universities. Here to name a few

Average GRE Scores or Good GRE Scores

It’s a huge mistake to start searching for schools only based on Graduate Record Exam Scores or GRE Cutoff score. There are so many other factors that are considered along with GRE scores for graduate school admission. But, having said that, I’m sure, students want easy way to find the universities based on their academic profile and GRE score.

I have seen students search for Good GRE scores for admission. that will give an idea, but average gre scores will give an perspective into each college and universities.

U might well get into some good universities for general chemistry like that of
Oklahoma but for Pharmaceutics u need to have a very good gre score(ur score will do if u have other credentials like very good academics, research or even sports interest) otherwise i would advice u to apply for any of these universities
1. Butler( rather good uni)
2.Temple (mediocre)
3.Long Island (no gre req)
4.Governor state uni (no gre req)

The other Universities where u can be a lil ambitious are:
1.Albany Uni
2.Houston Uni
3.Northeastern Uni

Hello again,
I started to study for GRE exam. I read that there is more than one type of exam.
A General exam and an Advanced exam. The advanced is supposed to concentrate in one area of expertise. I was wondering Which one should i take if i wanted to get a scholarship in M.Sc program for fields like, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering and other IT related fields.
Also, i was wondering which preparation book is good for the GRE. I read articles that say Barron’s and Kaplan’s books are good. So can anyone recommend me any good preparation book and which type of exam to take.
Thanks

42 Andy June 30, 2010 at 7:56 AM

Almost all schools require the GRE General Test. So, take that test. In addition, some schools may require you to take the GRE Subject Test (Advanced test). For computer-related fields, there is a test administered called GRE Subject Test Computer Science. You MAY have to take that exam if you wish to apply for scholarships etc. in good schools. Find out more about this before taking the test. Check the admission websites of your prospective universities/schools and check if they require the general or subject test; then take the subject test if needed.

Take the GRE Powerprep exam (CD comes in mail after registration) to find out how the test is. Practice some tests to see how ‘tough’ the actual test is.

After you are done with the GRE test, your scores are revealed (Verbal and Quant) and then you are asked for your university choices to send the scores to. So, have a list of universities in mind for different score ranges. Enter university choices accordingly.

74 lowGREhighGPA May 2, 2010 at 2:58 AM

I am a little confused about my low GRE score. I have a 3.94 GPA but only got a combined score of 900 on the GRE. Did I not prepare enough with the right materials? Maybe I didn’t. I read the algebra review book, a dummy book, and a vocabulary book and website but these didn’t help. What confuses me is that my GPA is significantly higher than others but they scored so much higher on the GRE.

wondering how can i get an offer from a graduate program in USA
how is your situation up to now?

Reply

80 eric April 30, 2010 at 4:42 AM

i plan to take the gre again.the verbal of 550 is ok which is about 75% but a quantitative score below 600 is not good enough for the competition, these are the advice i got from most graduate schools.
I hope to apply for fall 2011 so i can get enough time to try again and get more score for the quant.

Hi,
I was told talking to the professors of a university might help you with your application.I’m planning on applying for fall 2011.I know its early.I’m just asking because it is very important that I get a TA or RA.I want to do my MS in Industrial engg
In sent my scores to UIOWA,TAMU,ASU and Penn State…Are Michigan and Wisconsin long shots?

I have just taken up my GRE .
1370(Quant-740 and Verbal-630)AWA-4
My gpa from Madras Institute of Technology,Anna University is just 3.1
I also have what I believe to be a good profile.
5 paper presentations,2 projects and lots of extracurricular activities like debates and i also represent the college basketball team. Will my profile make up for my low gpa?

But you have to get min of 80 in toefl inorder to get admission..
Afterall it’s u’r wish because you will get admssion in below average universities in u.s. with your gre and toefl score..

There is no term called ideal in this type of format..
You have to be well prepared for gre..
Inoreder to crack verbal you require minimum of four mnths.
My suggestion is try to write, after completion of your 3-2 exam(in month of july or august)..

All is not lost..

I graduated with a BS- Mech Engineering degree in 2005 from DLSU-Manila Philippines
GPA 3.55/4.00
My GRE score was Q720 V420 A4.5.. took this Nov. 2009
Toefl was 114/120

I got accepted for Fall 2010 to Cornell University’s MEng Systems Engineering program

I guess, top universities look at the over all application. Strong Statement of Purpose and recommendations helps a lot. Try to contact faculty and express your interest with the program and research too!

Good luck!

Are you kidding me? I mean with that terrible score you want to actually apply? In which “GOOD” university do you think you will get admission with that score? If I were you, I would go back, actually open my books, study and retake the exam or choose another field. If that is seriously your level of competence, you will be butchered in Computer Sciences no matter how terrible a graduate school you go to. Or consider Australia or Britain instead, where they will give you admission if you can breath and eat.

HA ha ha! are you serious? Bioinformatics in a tier one university with that score? You won’t even make it to history or english literature with that score. I am not sure why you guys can’t get it through your thick heads that you actually will have to study to score well in GRE. It’s not a casino where you put in some money and a ‘high score’ comes out of the other end if you are lucky. No way! Go back to your books. Study like you are studying for an exam and then take the test. Then all these questions about where you can apply and get ‘lucky’ temporarily and hide your mediocrity, goes away.

You have an excellent score, but cast a wider net when you apply, because a lot of schools don’t have funds to give to good students this year, so applying to a number of schools will increase the probability of your being offered some good assistantship by a good school. Try bot top tier state and private universities. Good Luck!

Gre score doesn’t matter much for admit in US universities. It is a first filter for their admission process.Your score is gr8 but only based on this score you cant get admission in good US universities.
Profile (your GPA,publications, recommendations, research work, projects, internships) matters a lot for a very good university.

Ok I will say it like it is. Your GRE scores are horrible. Pharmacology is very competitive. You have either not studied for your GRE or you are mediocre. If you are just plain mediocre, I would encourage you to apply in Australian and British graduate schools. If you have not studied, then go back and actually study for GRE (yes surprise! this is an exam and you can’t do well unless you study for it) and once you have a score of about 1100, then apply to a us school and you will probably get admission to a few places. If you are however, not committed to studying and want a degree through some form of shortcut, then there is no place like down under or Queen’s Britain and apply to a school there.

I took my GRE a few days back. My score is 1200(verbal:460, quant : 740). I wanted to know if I would get an admission in any of the universities in US. I wanted to do an MS in Image Processing. It would be nice if you could suggest a few universities where I could find this specialisation.

My adviser at Yale University tells me that in the humanities, to be in contention, you have to have at least a 650 verbal. After you hit that threshold it doesn’t matter too much, but this will get you in the door. Another professor of mine said that he has seen a few applicants of people who he really wanted to admit, but their verbal scores were 620 or so, and they just couldn’t do it.

The GRE matters as a threshold, but after that the rest of your application becomes much more important (in the humanities).

What about verbal and quantitative scores of 710 and 720 respectively and an analytical writing score of 4.5. How closely do they look at the writing score?

I did search the universities’ websites. No information is given on the average acceptable score of GRE. Only one university has listed that the for the year 2007, the average score of admitted students was 747 for quant and 570 for verbal.

That verbal score is way more than mine. I posted here to know if you have any idea how much it will effect my application.
Thanks

168 jef December 27, 2009 at 12:45 PM

No. Your scores are too low. You might get admission to a university, a degree from where will get you no respectable job. Admission officials look at commitment to graduate studies when accepting students to their programs and GRE/GMAT score is the first sign of that commitment. When scores are as low as yours its a huge red flag and admissions will be given to you only if no one applies. If I were you, I would go back, actually study and get a good score before I applied.

Hi.
I have written GRE Twice in the last two months. The first time I gt a score of 1180(760-Quant and 420-Verbal) and the second time a score of 1060 (650-Quant and 410-Verbal).
CGPA in Masters of Social Work was 4.41 out of 7.

I wish to apply for a top-notch universities in the US next Fall for Ph D in Public Health related to gender and health.

Do u think it is wise? How important is the GRE Score for Applying for a Ph D? I have around one and a half years’ work experience.

While sending scores, should I send an average score or the second score to universities?

I am yet to appear for TOEFL

Please advise.

I have a good profile and I prepared hard for GRE but screwed it up. I was expecting something above 1350, but i got 1220. I really want to get into one of the good schools in the US like Cornell, Caltech, Stanford, UCB etc. , but I am doubtful of that because of the screw-up.

Guys, I need help and suggestions. What is it that i can do to get admission into good schools with a score of 1220. Can I still manage to fulfill my dreams?

Any help is appreciated. TIA.

Do I stand a chance to do my master’s in public health from any University in US?

Reply

201 SB September 2, 2009 at 1:13 AM

Hello,

I am currently looking to apply to doctorate programs, to start my studies in Fall 2010. I’m interested in development – international, sustainable, community, and possibly health-related development. I already have a masters in public health.

Ideally I would like to receive a fellowship/stipend while obtaining my PhD since I do not want to rack up debt. However, I am not as interested in research as I am in practice. I want to work out in the field, not in academia.

My GRE score is 1500 (720 verbal, 780 math). I know that this is a high score, but is it enough to get a fellowship for a DrPH or other practice-oriented doctorate? Or do I need to go into research at least while I’m getting my doctorate, and then branch off into practice after I do my dissertation?

Also, while I know that a GRE score of 1500 is very good, is it enough to make up for my undergrad GPA? My graduate GPA is 3.8, however my undergrad GPA is 2.9 (I was younger then… immature).
I’m hoping the most recent GPA is more important.

202 HSB September 2, 2009 at 9:09 AM

You have an impressive profile. With 1500 and 3.8 GPA, you can get admission with fellowship or REsearch or Teaching assistant. But, select schools according to your research interest or area where you will be willing to spend next 4 to 5 years.

I read this in some website.. so i m just pasting the formulae of calculating CGPA:

For students under the 4-point credit system, the procedure is CGPA*18+20=Equivalent percentage

Eg: If CGPA is 3.00, then the equivalent percentage = 3.00*18+30=74%

For students under the 10-point grading system, the procedure is CGPA*9.3=Equivalent percentage

Eg: If CGPA is 9.00, then the equivalent percentage = 9.00*9.3=83.7%

Or that is what I had to do when I was applying for a doctorate school specializing Microbiology. Good Luck :)

Pls, what do u think my chances of getting full funding are?

Reply

267 Adesuyi Ajayi February 11, 2010 at 6:23 PM

Detola,
You have good GRE scores, but what matters more is your percentile score in that exam. To be competitive you need at least an 80% percentile score in Verbal, Quantitative and analytical writing.
Rice and Princeton have a low admission rare (< 20%) and fully fund all their admitted graduate students. You must have a good GPA from a fairly rigorous academic program and established university, your LOR should be strong from professors who know you well, and you should have undertaken some research (published or not) which indicates your discipline for inquiry.
Good luck.

hey guys
The score should be balanced. If you are getting 700+ in quantitative and around 300 in verbal it is not going to help you in admission. One part we usualy ignore is writing part, in that also you should atlest score 4 and above. Previous school transcripts also plays a pivotal role in your admission. Good acadmic record enhances your chance of admission. Last but not the least LORs are also imp.

Kavitha, as per my information, only barrons is not enough for the GRE preparation. You should also study BIG BOOK software in which there are 24 tests on verbal & which can be downloaded from the internate. Also in addition you should also get in touch with site named 800.com, on which you will find 5 more tests on the verbal section. KAPLAN is also one of the great software, because the score you will get in this software will be near to the score you will get in the actual GRE.

Hello Sir,

I’m an architect, having completed my graduation in 2008. I’ve taken both GRE & TOEFl, scoring 1260 (760 Quants; 500 Verbal) & 117 (Speaking 27; Rest all 30) respectively. I do know that my GRE is not too impressive, & I really look forward to appearing for it again. However, I would want to know my current prospects as far as Universities are concerned. My GPA (though I haven’t gotten it calculated through WES) is easily above 3.7 (current percentile – 96.18; current university standing – 3rd), & I’ve got top scores in my University twice. Also, I’ve been working as a visiting faculty in two separate institutes, & also work as a Junior Architect with a firm. We’re also supposed to send in a portfolio of our works along with the applications as it is considered a major criterion for selection. I believe it would only add to my academic standing. I plan to apply to UT at Austin, University of Michigan & University of Washigton at St. Louis most definitely for a Master’s/MS in Urban Design in Fall 2010. By then, I will have had a work experience of 2 years. Do I stand a chance to get intO any of these with a scholarship or GA with my current score & credentials?

Awaiting reply.

Thanks for the reply. However, do you think my chances of obtaining enough funding would increase if, say, I get a score around 1350-1400? I know this sounds kind of juvenile, but I really don’t think my academic performance rating would act as a deterrent, as I know for a fact that a lot of architecture students do not perform really well on the tests, but still manage to land up an admission with funding and/or GA based on their portfolios and academic performance. No stats available, but the above info is obtained on the basis of one-to-one conversation.
Also, can you recommend a few other good schools for Urban Design specifically, which might consider me appropriate enough for financial aid with my current scores?

Please reply asap. Thanks again.

@neda (129) – With GRE Score 910 you will get into very average school. If you are looking to join a school that has research, you will need atleast 1100+ in GRE.
My suggestion – Take GRE again or apply to schools that require minimum GRE of 900 or 850 to No gre required at all. But, it will be really difficult to find schools.

Mam/Sir,

I would like to seek your personalized advice on my future aspiration for a master’s course (M.S.) in construction management in your esteemed university.

I have been working since the completion of my undergraduate study in Bachelors of Civil Engineering from Visveswaraiah Technological University, Belgaum-India.

Presently I am working for Grasim Industries Limited, on the position of Territory Technical Manager for the last 6 months.
Previously I had been working for Global Telecom Ltd., on the position of Engineer Delivery and have 6 months experience of the same.

The aspiration has been dampening since my corporate responsibilities are as increasing and this letter is out of all these realizations.

To keep the aspiration alive I had undergone IELTS exam with a score 6.5 (overall) and GRE with a score of 830 (out of 1600-common).

As far as undergraduate studies are concerned I had achieved a 58% on an overall basis of all semesters in Indian standards.

This is requested if I stand a chance with the present background kindly advice the process for application and if not kindly advice what other exams or standards I should meet to be a considerable applicant for your esteemed university in the particular program.

Thanking you for going through my profile will be expecting a reply soon.

Yours truly,

Ankur Srivastava.

Hi…..

My GRE score is 1030 ( Q-700, V-330). My toefl score is 76 ( R-16, L-18, S-20, W-22). I know my both scores are low. But I want to get admission with full funding in a US university for graduate studies in Electrical Engineering. Is there any possibilities? Because I’m not able to proceed my education without funding. Please provide me some suggestions. What should I do next retake the tests or make a try? If possible then give some list of university.

My undergraduate CGPA is 3.58 out of 4.00 ( 75.6%) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I have also work experience more than 2 years in telecommunication field for some multinational companies as Engineer.

I’m earnestly requesting you for some advice……………

@saiba sachdev: I studied in US so its easy for me to write about schools here. I could find about UK schools, but it wouldn’t be personal experience. I had to make things. I wouldn’t do justice to this blog. But, if I find someone who is interested to write few articles about UK schools, I will post it here for sure.

@Laud: 1330 is very good score. For Phd look at better schools hat have good research. I lived in Melbourne Florida where FIT is located and also had chance to stay with students in FIT. I don’t think that’s school is right for PhD. GO to school where you have good research. Checkout University of Florida, Virginia Common Wealth, Virginia Tech, UT Arlington, ..Applying for PhD is much different from applying for M.S. Mostly you will get get aid for PhD. So, no worries.

Which schools should I look at for MSc or MSc/PhD in Computer Science or Software Engineering. I’m from West Africa and will need FULL AID, either in the form of a grant or TAShip or RAship.

I’m looking at Rensselaer, UCONN, UMASS-Boston and Florida Inst of Tech. Any ideas or thought?? Thanks

@Geekydoc: 1350 is very good score. You have to understand more about bioinformatics, before applying with degree in Medicine. Reason being, bioinformatics involves programming and not sure how much exposure you have towards writing codes. While there are so many other courses available that doesn’t involve programming, you can certainly explore such courses than bioinformatics.

I recently received a 1330 on my GREs, 750 Quantitative and 580 Verbal. I am applying for my Master’s in Environmental Studies or Energy and Environmental Policy.

Firstly, is A 580 acceptable or do I need to take the test again? How can I find out the average scores for those applying to the same programs?

Secondly, my undergrad GRE is 2.9, are my GRE scores or my GPA more important in applying to grad school?

Letters of recommendation – I am getting two from employers and 1 from a prof., is that OK?

Thank you in advance for your help.

@ABHISHEK JAMWAL: There are schools that have deadline in April 2009, but to be on safer side, try to apply by mid Jan 2009.

Hey, today i gave the gre and got a similar result and am planning going for Ms in computer science> quant 740, verbal 470… i am planning in taking it again and see if i can score a little bit higher.
Nevertheless, i am interested in knowing if I reach for example 770 in quant where could I have chances in being admitted. Is Princeton and other ivy leagues out of my league?? Can you help me with this.

Good score. 740 to 770 will not make much difference. But, 470 to 570 in Verbal will improve your chances to get into good school.

@kavitha: For GRE score of 900, getting admission is tough. Even if you get admission, then Visa might be problem. I would suggest to take GRE again.

@tinu: There are 1000′s of colleges and universities in U.S. There are universities that give admission for GRE score of 1500 and also for score less than 800. Getting score above 1100 is good to get into good school, if you need scholarship, try to score more than 1300.
