Average GRE Scores for Grad Schools in U.S. Universities

Raghuram Sukumar —  August 8, 2008 — 1,068 Comments

average gre scoresAverage GRE scores for grad schools for U.S. Universities and graduate school is the most  common search term used by students trying to find universities to apply. I personally have gone through the university selection process and I know how tough to select graduate school based on your GRE test Score.

Average GRE scores for Grad schools

It’s very hard to find the Average GRE scores  for Grad School at one single search or minimum GRE scores required for admission for each department and college.

But, some universities list the average GRE test scores of students admitted in previous semesters. Lets look at average GRE and Revised GRE Scores for various departments in few selected universities in USA below.

Average GRE Scores – University List

I have started writing about Average GRE Scores for various universities. Here to name a few

Average GRE Scores

It’s a huge mistake to start searching for grad schools only based on Graduate Record Exam Scores or GRE Cutoff score. There are so many other factors that are considered along with GRE scores for graduate school admission. But, having said that, I’m sure, students want easy way to find the universities based on their academic profile and GRE score.

I have seen students search for Good GRE scores for admission. That will give an idea, but average gre scores will give an perspective into each college and universities.

With Revised GRE, few schools have listed both Test scores that are accepted. You can also refer to Old GRE to Revised GRE Score Conversion

Not all universities list the minimum or average GRE of admitted students. If university website doesn’t list the score requirements, you can send email to department and ask for the score requirements.

  2. do i've to purchase those softwares.

i am going through only BARRON'S will this be enough?

    power prep i have downloaded.

can u tell me the software which can be downloaded freely to take test

    • Kavitha, as per my information, only barrons is not enough for the GRE preparation. You should also study BIG BOOK software in which there are 24 tests on verbal & which can be downloaded from the internate. Also in addition you should also get in touch with site named 800.com, on which you will find 5 more tests on the verbal section. KAPLAN is also one of the great software, because the score you will get in this software will be near to the score you will get in the actual GRE.

please Sir, I got a total score of 1180 in GRE and 110 in TOEFL. I as well have a Degree in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka with a GPA of 2.8 out of 5.0. I would love you to suggest a school which can offer me a scholarship in Economics at the Graduate-Level. I will be desperately waiting for your quick reply. Thanks

  9. I got GRE 1210 ( q:770 v:440) what university could I apply, I am looking for public politics, or MBA.

  10. Sandeepsingh Sisodia February 24, 2009 at 8:13 AM

    Hello Sir,

I'm an architect, having completed my graduation in 2008. I've taken both GRE & TOEFl, scoring 1260 (760 Quants; 500 Verbal) & 117 (Speaking 27; Rest all 30) respectively. I do know that my GRE is not too impressive, & I really look forward to appearing for it again. However, I would want to know my current prospects as far as Universities are concerned. My GPA (though I haven't gotten it calculated through WES) is easily above 3.7 (current percentile – 96.18; current university standing – 3rd), & I've got top scores in my University twice. Also, I've been working as a visiting faculty in two separate institutes, & also work as a Junior Architect with a firm. We're also supposed to send in a portfolio of our works along with the applications as it is considered a major criterion for selection. I believe it would only add to my academic standing. I plan to apply to UT at Austin, University of Michigan & University of Washigton at St. Louis most definitely for a Master's/MS in Urban Design in Fall 2010. By then, I will have had a work experience of 2 years. Do I stand a chance to get intO any of these with a scholarship or GA with my current score & credentials?

    Awaiting reply.

    • Sandeep – You have good profile, but schools you have listed – I think it will be 50/50 chances to get some form of aid. Read http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/financial-aid-us-

      • Sandeepsingh Sisodia February 27, 2009 at 3:49 AM

Thanks for the reply. However, do you think my chances of obtaining enough funding would increase if, say, I get a score around 1350-1400? I know this sounds kind of juvenile, but I really don't think my academic performance rating would act as a deterrent, as I know for a fact that a lot of architecture students do not perform really well on the tests, but still manage to land up an admission with funding and/or GA based on their portfolios and academic performance. No stats available, but the above info is obtained on the basis of one-to-one conversation.

Also, can you recommend a few other good schools for Urban Design specifically, which might consider me appropriate enough for financial aid with my current scores?

        Please reply asap. Thanks again.

  21. @neda (129) – With GRE Score 910 you will get into very average school. If you are looking to join a school that has research, you will need atleast 1100+ in GRE.

My suggestion – Take GRE again or apply to schools that require minimum GRE of 900 or 850 to No gre required at all. But, it will be really difficult to find schools.

  22. I got a gre score of 760 and i want to know to which college i can have admissions for this fall semester i am expecting a toefl score of 90 can u guide me to which college can i have admissions .
