Study in Canada – College and Universities. Study Permits.

Update from a reader who got USA F1 Visa rejected 4 times.

I secured 3 admits from reputed US Universities

  • Old Dominion University
  • Lamar University
  • St. Joseph

I opted for Old Dominion for MS in CS. However my F1 visa got rejected four times.

I secured first ranked in PG in IT program of University of Mumbai also I have full moral and financial support from my family for Higher Education but things are not happening as planned.
Since I am unable to get US visa, I have decided to go to Canada for MS in CS. I have heard that getting Canadian visa is very easy as compared to that of US.

I also wish to know the career prospects in Canada in Computer Science field.

Canada Instead of USA

Canada has its advantages compared to USA.

If you worry about getting job after Higher Education, then you really cannot go to any country for higher education.

Right now its easier to get Permanent residency in Canada after completing Education in Canada.

Good luck with your higher education journey in Canada.

I am interested in doing post grad degree in Computer Science in Canada.

I have few doubts in my mind. My GRE score in older format is 1250 (720 Q + 530 V). My B.tech Comp Sci engg. percentage is 75% till 7 semesters.

Am I eligible enough to apply to university of Toronto, Waterloo, Windsor etc.

  • Which universities should I apply to?
  • Another thing that confuses me is IELTS or TOEFL?
  • Is it possible to apply to universities before taking english proficiency test?

I am in final year and I think I should apply for fall 2012. TOEFL dates near me are not available till 25th feb. With IELTS I would get result earlier.

One more thing which I feel little stupid asking is that when I checked each universities websites, I couldn’t decide the department I want to apply to.

There is Computer Science department and Electrical and computer engineering department.

I want to pursue Software Engg. but I’ll prefer it without thesis i.e I would like to do M.E. In future I would like to work in companies like Microsoft etc. I don’t want to become a teacher.

Application to Canada

Looks like you are just getting started with higher education process. I recommend going through admission website at University of British Columbia.

They have one of the best International prospective students information page.

You can apply for admission before completing TOEFL or IELTS, but university would expect to get the official scores within certain dates after deadline to process your application.

There r many topics abt jobs in USA and how to build ur resume, contacts etc… however, nothing abt scene for entrepreneurs…

Let me say you this – USA Immigration policy is not friendly for entrepreneurs (non-immigrant). Its easy for someone to start a company from outside USA than within USA (if you don’t have certain visa types). Thats one of the reasons US is losing so many entrepreneurs.

Well known specializations for specific courses in each of the top US and Canada Universities…

You have to find what is your interest, then find which schools offer research in your area of interest. Not the other way around.

I think, I have answered all the questions posted in the facebook at the time of this writing.

What do think about doing the same,  like once every 2 weeks?

I found this interesting data on number of students enrolled in Masters degree programs in Canadian Universities.

There is a gradual increase in number of students going to Masters degree.

I found 4,800 in Mathematics, computer and information sciences low compared to other degree programs.

Number of students coming to US for Masters in Computer Science from India could be much more than 4800 per year.

Why do you have to pay attention to Average GRE Scores for Canada Universities?

Few Universities in Canada list Average GRE Scores required for admission to into their graduate program.

Based on students admitted to the programs, departments would have data to calculate Average GRE Scores. Comparing that with your GRE scores will help you to estimate your admission probability.

In previous post we looked at GRE Scores required for Canadian Universities.

If your GRE Score is way below the average GRE Scores required by your target universities in Canada, then you may have to consider different schools.

Average GRE Scores Canada – Universities

Here is the list of universities Canada and their average GRE Scores.

Average GRE Scores – Concordia University (Department of Psychology)

What is required GRE Scores for Canadian Universities? Is it possible to get admission in Canada without GRE Scores?

I searched to find the GRE Scores for Canadian Universities.

There are so many schools, but with few minuets of search, I pulled the following information about required GRE Scores for Canadian Universities.

Unlike schools in US, universities have GRE as optional.

GRE Scores for Canadian Universities

GRE Score requirements fall into 3 categories

  • Some universities don’t require GRE scores for grad school admission.
  • Some Canadian universities require GRE scores, but don’t specify minimum scores
  • Some require GRE score and have minimum GRE Scores for admission.

Simon Fraser University – GRE Scores

  • Computing Science Department – We look at the complete application to get an understanding of the applicants suitability to our program. No single criteria exists that uniquely determines this fact. Hence, even if your test scores don’t perfectly fulfill our requirements, we still consider your application to look for outstanding personalities.

McGill University

  • Biochemistry: International students who have received their degree outside North America should submit the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), either the General or Subject test in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology. The minimum score is 550. The GRE is not required but is strongly recommended.
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering : Applicants who have not completed a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in Canada must provide a GRE score on the General Aptitude Test. Additional Universities will be added to this list. If you required required GRE Scores for Universities in Canada, leave the name of the university and department as comment below.

Question – What is the typical cost of living in Canada vs USA  for international students in Canada. I’m from India and planning  to study Masters, but split between Canada vs USA.

Lets looks at cost of living  in Canada vs USA and compare tuition fees per year for Canadian vs US Universities.

Living Expenses typically include your apartment rent, utilities, food, entertainment, personal expenses, etc.

Typical room and board expenses listed at university websites under cost of living assume you are not sharing your apartment or room.

Students from India share the apartment (2 to 4 person per apartment). When expenses gets shared my roommates, then your cost of living comes down.

Cost of Living in Canada

  • Apartment/Housing Rental: Rent can vary from $300 to $500+. If you live in single bedroom apartment, then it will be expensive. Shared rental will be cheaper. So, it’s based on your preference.
  • Other expenses:  Between $250 to $400 depending on food, eating out, cellphone, internet and television connections.

Total you are looking at $350 + $250 = $600 (Canadian Dollars per month) for your day-to-day expenses.

At time of this writing 1 USD = 0.984189 CAD.

Here is the table  from University of British Columbia on cost of Living

Estimated minimum annual living costs for single person (not including tuition)
Student fees $655 Includes U-Pass full public transit pass for 3 terms
Room & Board $12,000 On or off-campus housing and food costs
Books & Supplies $800 Reading materials, lab/studio costs vary by program
BC Health Plan $648 Mandatory basic health coverage
AMS/GSS Extended Health Plan $224 Prescription drugs, vision, dental coverage
Personal & Household Expenses $2100 Clothing, personal care, household goods, etc
Entertainment  $600 Having a bit of fun!
TOTAL
$17,027 Remember, this does not include tuition

We calculated $600 per month based on sharing an apartment, which comes to $600×12 = $7200 per year including food, entertainment. But, you can estimate around $10,000 in living expenses per year.

Cost of Living in USA

Cost of living in US Universities is along the same lines.

You can negate cost of living factors while deciding between US and Canada if you are comparing similar cities. Major difference comes into picture when you include tuition fees. Lets cover tuition fees between Canadian and US Universities in next post.

Do you have any other questions about cost of living in Canada?

How long does it take to get Permanent residency status in USA and Canada for students attending Masters degree in respective countries?

Immigration rules in Canada are much friendly compared to old immigration polices still followed in US.

Lets compare how long it would take to get Green Card in US and Permanent residency in Canada for a students studying Masters degree in USA and Canada.

USA – Green Card

Here is a quick overview of Green Card process in USA.

  • Get F1 Visa
  • Compete Masters Degree (2 to 3 years)
  • Find a job
  • H1B Work visa valid for 6 years
  • Employer typically files for green card in your 5th year in H1B
  • Assuming Green Card is applied in EB-3 category
  • With current wait times, it would take over 20 years to get green card.

Canada Permanent Residency

Assuming student is applying for Provincial Nominee program in British Columbia (if you attend schools like University of British Columbia)

BC Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is an immigration program that allows BC employers to recommend highly skilled workers to Citizenship and Immigration Canada for permanent residence.

Applicant will receive faster processing of their application for permanent resident status (within 12 months) and will be able to extend their work permit for an additional two years.

Here’s how the program works:

  • A BC employer offers a job to an international student who has almost or already completed their degree program. The job offer must be a full-time, permanent position; in most cases it must be related to the student’s field of study.
  • The employer and applicant each complete the required BC PNP forms.
  • The employer submits the complete application, with a letter recommending the applicant for nomination, within one year of completion of the program of studies.

So, it takes about 2 years to complete Masters and with a job, you can get Permanent residency in about 3 to 4 years.

When it comes to Canada, high cold temperature is what everyone fear. If you make up your mind to overcome the fear towards cold (like so many other students) then Canada might be good destination for higher education.

Canada Student Partners Program (SPP) with India  was launched in April 2009. It was created to improve the Canada Study Permit issue to be more streamlines and faster process with higher approval rate.

Canada college admission application submission under the SPP is at the discretion of each participating college.

Canada Student Partners Program has partnership with Canada High Council in India.

All Study Permit application checklists have been revised and improved as a result of the Student Partners Program framework to help students make simpler applications. All students are strongly encouraged to submit supporting documents as indicated in the checklists to facilitate the processing of their applications. Checklists are available online at VFS

It is strongly recommended that you submit your application by 01 August for September entry and by 01 December for January entry. Applications for a Study Permit received after August 15 for programs beginning in September or after December 15 for the ones beginning in January will not normally be processed in time for the start of class and will likely be refused.

Canada Study Permit Processing Times (faster when applied through SPP with majority of application accepted).

Foreign students require Canada Study Permit to study in Canadian colleges and universities.

We looked at How to apply for Canada Study Permit. One of the major different between US Student visa and Canada Study permit is how Canada Student Visa (study permits) is approved and issued.

Canada Study Permit processing time varies between countries and visa office.

You must submit your study permit application and documents to the visa office that is responsible for the country or region where you live.

If you are planning to attend college from August, then plan to complete and send visa application based on Canada Study Permit processing time.

It takes upto 15 weeks to process the application in some counties.
