Good vs Bad – Software Programmer

Most students studying engineering colleges in India find jobs in Software Company after completing B.E. It really doesn’t matter what Department they are studying in Engineering. Civil, Mechanical, Geo-Informatics, Biotechnology, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering students get entry level Software Engineer job with some software firm.

Almost everyone is going to be a Software Programmer of some sort, but how to recognize a good programmer? You cannot call yourself as a software programmer when you just learned to code in a language just for the save of doing a job. There are certain qualities that will differentiate good ( or hard code) and bad programmer. Recently I came across an interesting article How to Recognize a Good Programmer if you are a business person. Below is a summary

Positive indicators:

Programs as a hobby
Significant (and often numerous) personal side-projects over the years
Learns new technologies on his/her own
Started programming long before university/work/Job

Negative indicators:

Programming is a day job
Learns new technologies in company/company-sponsored courses
Happy to work with whatever technology you’ve picked
Started programming at university

USCIS – Redesigned Website

USCIS have launched new redesigned website. It has information which is easier to understand and provides lot of improvement compared to previous version.

Case Status Online page is much more informative and provides more information about the application submitted to USCIS. If you are waiting for H1B 2010 approval, you may get more information about your Case satus for your receipt number compared to previous version.

90 days before President Obama said they USCIS will launch new website and it happened right after 90 days.

New to Twitter? Don’t Worry – Just Read This

Twitter is very powerful medium. When Orkut was launched students started using it, it spread like a wild fire. New users of Orkut spread the word on how much fun they had with Orkut.

Twitter is going crazy at rate much faster than Orkut. Inorder to understand the power of Twitter, you need to start using it. Just creating a Twitter profile and have few tweets is not going to help you.

When people around the world, news paper, blogs .. start talking about Twitter, you need to try it out and see for yourself. Twitter can be used for pretty much anything.

New Twitter User

If you are new to twitter here are few things you can do with Twitter

Start following your friends
Invite your friends to create a new Twitter Account
Tweet daily and often, even if you have no followers.
Get to know latest news ( from Trending Topics)
Search for new resources ( Example GRE, TOEFL, H1B Visa, GRE Books, ..)
Take part in conversation

Above 6 things will get you started with Twitter. Once you have some 20 to 30 tweets and some followers, then you will realize the features it can offer.

Everytime you tweet, you are getting closer to understand the power of Twitter. Once you get to know the Twitter Jargons, you can feel the power of it. Since you can write only 140 characters, you tend to convey the message directly without beating around the bush.

Example 1 – Job Search with Twitter

You are about to complte your Masters degree in US and after applying for jobs to companies and there is no interview call. Then you decide to search jobs using twitter. Almost all the hiring managers and HR are using twitter to find potential candidates.

You find company HR’s and send them a tweet "Looking for Job as Network Engineer. My profile matches Network Engineer Job Id 645 recently posted in your company Link to resume. Thanks”

How to find HR and others Twitter Users? Thats what you will learn as you use twitter regularly.

Example 2 – Job Opportunities in Twitter

All the companies are now posting new jobs in twitter even before posting in company website. Tweet can be tagged for specific keywords. You maybe be searching for job in Biotechnology field.

So, do a quick search on keyword “Biotech Jobs&” any new postings will be displayed and you can be the first person to apply for that job.

Example 3 – Business Opportunity

You might be running a Professional resume writing company. To find clients, you can use twitter to see who is searching for jobs or other tweets with keyword “resume”. Read their tweet and see if you can help them to review and edit your resume.

If you have your company’s URL in your profile, they will visit your site and if they are interested, they can order a resume review.

Power of Twitter

As you can see from above 3 examples, Twitter can be very powerful if used in the right way. But, to get there you need to start using Twitter. PTEA to Replace TOEFL and IELTS?

PTE Academic ( Pearson Test of English Academic) is an innovative and engaging way to demonstrate your English language proficiency to international institutions.

TOEFL is mandatory requirement for International students apply for US Universities. PTEA is new exam which will be offered from October, 2009 to gain some share in standardized English Proficiency testing market. Before students can take the test, PTEA must be accepted by Universities.

Right now about 50+ Universities in US accept PTEA exam for Graduate School Admission, whereas TOEFL is accepted by almost all the colleges and universities. So, it will take huge effort for Pearson to market this exam to the Universities and then get them to accept the test.

PTE Academic vs TOEFL

When an International student thinks about applying to Universities in America, by default GRE and TOEFL exams comes to mind. For Australian and UK universities, IETLS comes to mind.

There are small group of students applying to US Universities using ITELS. But, those group of students should be planning to apply for admission in UK or Australia. Also, students taking TOEFL are planning to study in America. It will take lot of time, effort (many years) to make students take PTEA.

IELTS exam is know to all the students, but majority of those students applying for colleges to US from India go for TOEFL. So, PETA has tough challenges atleast in India.
