Archives For Study in USA

I have been accepted FSU in Florida and have waited for over 3 months for them to tell me that Homeland security has informed me that I don’t qualify for Federal grants or loans.

This is a major issue for H4 visa holders we have to find twice the amount of funds for tuition in Florida as any other Florida Resident. The only saving option is that I qualify for bright futures and maybe some state loans. I do however need a citizen as a cosigner or guarantor. Can’t wait to become a permanent resident.! any more ideas of how to acquire financial help as I just turned 18 .My parents are also waiting for their permanent residence.

That is very true. Federal Grants or Loans are not available for international students or visa holders.

Even regular student loans require co-signer, who must be Permanent Resident or U.S. Citizen.

Education is expensive. Talk to you FSU’s Financial Aid office to see if you qualify for any other financial aid or scholarship.

What is Plagiarism and Why is it Important?

In college courses, we are continually engaged with other people’s ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others’ ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information.

How Can Students Avoid Plagiarism?

To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use

  • another person’s idea, opinion, or theory;
  • any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings—any pieces of information—that are not common knowledge;
  • quotations of another person’s actual spoken or written words; or
  • paraphrase of another person’s spoken or written words.

Strategies for Avoiding Plagiarism

1. Put in quotations everything that comes directly from the text especially when taking notes.

2. Paraphrase, but be sure you are not just rearranging or replacing a few words.

Instead, read over what you want to paraphrase carefully; cover up the text with your hand, or close the text so you can’t see any of it (and so aren’t tempted to use the text as a “guide”). Write out the idea in your own words without peeking.

3. Check your paraphrase against the original text to be sure you have not accidentally used the same phrases or words, and that the information is accurate.

I hope you have an idea about plagiarism and ways to avoid it.

You will be instructed about plagiarism during your International Student Orientation. Pay close attentions to the section.

What schools have the most international students in MBA programs?

Many MBA programs are the main draw to the US for international students. Recently, many MBA programs have begun ramping up their foreign recruitment  to bring a more global mindset to their programs.

US News has put together a list of the top 10 schools with the most international students in MBA programs.

The number after the college is the percentage of which of its student body is international students.

  1. Arkansas State University- Jonesboro; 75.6%
  2. University of California- Riverside; 73.9%
  3. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; 69.2%
  4. Purdue University- West Lafayette; 63.1%
  5. St. John’s University; 59.4%
  6. Hofstra University; 57.6%
  7. Thunderbird School of Global Management; 56.1%
  8. Syracuse University; 55.8%
  9. Babson College; 54.9%
  10. Clarkson University; 54.7%

With these rankings, you can see that being an international student plays a big part in the admissions process.

There has been a huge upward trend in foreign admissions as admissions officers try to pull together more diverse MBA cohorts, which are supposed to represent all skill levels, cultures, personal, and professional lives.

So it would be beneficial to apply to these programs as an international student because you have a high likelihood of getting in if you have the grades and experience to back it up.

Also, these schools have the most international students in MBA programs, but there may be more colleges out there still looking for more international applicants.

What are the differences between Federal vs Private Graduate student loans?

A graduate degree is an investment in your future, and plotting out how you’ll pay for this educational experience is important.

Both private and federal loans are available for domestic students to assist with the cost of tuition (or even living expenses), so take time to consider how you plan to finance this carefully.

Although some scholarship or assistantships are available through most programs, typically many students have some component of their financial aid from loans.

Federal vs Private Graduate Student Loans

  • Federal loans are those distributed by the government
  • Private loans can come from a variety of sources, including credit unions, a school, or a bank.

Federal Student Loans

There are several benefits to federal loans that make them more appealing.

For many students, the goal is to max out federal loans before seeking help from private lenders.

Federal loans generally have fixed interest rates and repayment options based on income, in addition to being slightly easier to apply for.

For example, most federal loans do not require a credit check (except for graduate PLUS loans).

As long as the student remains enrolled at least half time, the payments on those loans can be deferred.

After graduation, loans can be consolidated into one monthly payment to make repayment simpler, and sometimes portions of the loan can be forgiven with some public service (think Teach for America or the Peace Corps).

If the student faces trouble repaying a federal loan, there are temporary postponement or lowered payment options.

In order to receive federal loans, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which opens the door to up to $20,500 in government support each year.

federal vs private student loans

Students facing increased living expenses can also expand their loan options by considering the graduate PLUS loan.

Private Student Loans

Unlike federal loans, private lenders are not required to work with fixed interest rates, and as a result, private rates are almost always higher than what the federal government offers.

Sometimes, these rates can even climb close to 20%, which can increase the underlying repayment by a significant amount.

Private lenders also are stricter with their application guidelines and tend to require an established credit record.

Especially for younger graduate students, this record of credit might not be established or sufficient for approval.

Those with lower credit scores might increase the overall cost, too, which is why it’s recommended that students receive federal loans first before turning to private lenders.

Private loans are also incredibly strict when it comes to repayment.

They generally offer three options:

  • immediate repayment
  • interest-only repayment
  • deferred payment

Private loans can be discovered through a variety of online platforms and by working with the financial aid office at your university.

Be sure to compare options before applying to ensure you’ve found the private loan that’s the best fit for your needs.

If possible, receive as much aid as you can through the federal government prior to seeking private loans.

There are multiple ways to finance your graduate education, all of which can be uncovered with a little research on your part.

Spend some time understanding federal vs private graduate student loans and determining your student loan options and let the financial worries of graduate school leave your mind.

We talk about the following topics

  • University Transfer
  • Wasted 1 year  of MS
  • Life Style at Texas A&M University, Commerce
  • Cost of Living
  • Financial Aid
  • Spring Break Trip
  • Car Accident
  • University Transfer Process

This interview shows about the easy process of University Transfer within USA. But, schools accept only maximum of 9 Credits Hours to be transferred.

Naveen Yegyan spent 3 semesters at Lamar University and completed close to 27 Credits. But, Texas A&M University can accept only 9 Credits.

If he had transferred at end of first semester, he could have saved 2 semesters of time and tuition fees and other expenses. But, good to see that he’s enjoying his course at Texas A&M, Commerce.

Three Questions for you

  1. What do you think of video interviews like this?
  2. Should I do more interviews in the blog?
  3. What other questions should I ask during interviews?

college budgetWhile it’s true that graduate students get more money for school than undergraduate students, there are still a lot of expenses that many international students don’t think of when trying to budget for grad school.

U.S. News has compiled a list of 4 ways international grad students can budget.

Calculate expenses for family members

If you’re bringing a spouse or children with you to America to study in grad school, costs are going to be higher.

You have to factor in costs of healthcare, housing, food, and other miscellaneous expenses for each family member.

Also, remember that strict US visa restrictions severely limit employment opportunities for international students and their families, which limits the ability for spouses to make an income.

Research historic tuition rate increases

Tuition rates are always increasing at US schools. So when  budgeting for US graduate schools, budget for your second year of study instead of your first, as historically, tuition rates rise anywhere between 10 and 20 percent for a student’s second year of study.

Also, if you are applying for any scholarships, be sure to ask if they can change it yearly based on tuition increases.

Look for financial assistance for students in specific fields

Many colleges have something called “teaching fellowships” in different fields, however they are much more common in the “hard sciences” than in fields such as “business”.

Teaching fellowships give students money to pursue a graduate degree, but in exchange for maybe teaching a class or performing research.

Some smaller schools may waive your tuition totally if you get a teaching fellowship.

Research US healthcare system

The US healthcare system is a huge hurdle that needs to be negotiated if you are an international student.

It is a largely private system, unlike many countries that have public healthcare systems.

Simple guide to complex health insurance  article will show you why healthcare is expensive.

So before you go to the doctor, be sure to find out what insurance your college has and which doctors are covered under the plan.

This will save you a lot of money from accidentally choosing a doctor outside of your plan.

Be sure to also research copay amounts, how much the student emergency room costs, and what your deductible is, as these should also be in your budget.

This is the perfect example of expensive health care cost – 2 Months in USA : Travel, Courses and $2500 for Medical Emergency

With these 4 ways international grad students can budget in mind, you can start your grad school search with some criteria in place to help you save.

Following post is from Quora Thread How does it feel to complete your final PhD defense?

Reply posted by Aaron Wester, PhD.

I sat on the couch, clutching my iPhone tightly. I had just completed my oral defense and my heart was still racing a thousand beats per minute. My palms were sweaty, I mused, in an effort to pass the time.

At the completion of my presentation and Q&A round, I was asked by my mentor to step off the call. I knew they were discussing my research, my findings, my responses to their questions, my presentation, and were working together to make an informed mutual decision.

It would only take objections from one committee member to halt my progress and end my journey towards my end state goal.

I didn’t realize that the clock on our family room wall ticked so loudly until I sat there on the couch in excruciating silence, waiting for the inevitable call. Each tick was a reminder that time was not standing still, though it felt like an eternal wait. A thousand questions raced through my mind. Did they like my presentation? Was my research good enough?

Did my last “So What?” slide hammer home the final message that my findings were valid and reliable?

Did I answer their questions to their satisfaction?

Did I leave anything important out?

Did my mentor remember my phone number?

Should I call him back?

Could I live up to the title of “Doctor” that I had fought to earn? What would my family say if I failed?

The ring on my phone was startling. It brought me back from the depths of my darkest fears, thoughts, and concerns.

I pressed the answer button and raised the device to my ear.

It felt weighted down by the intensity of my emotions, if that were even possible. “Hello, this is Aaron.” I slowly stated. After what seemed like several minutes, though was probably only a split second instance, I heard the most wonderful six words stated back to me by my mentor, “Congratulations Dr. Wester, you earned it.”

At that moment, I was overwhelmed, happy, elated, excited, shaking, and terribly tense.

I had survived one of the most difficult experiences of my 38 years of existence on this earth, 3rd only to asking my wife to marry me, and being told by hospital staff that we could take our newborn first child home without being provided any additional guidance, instructions, or “Parenting Guide for Dummies” book.

I had survived almost 5 years of dedicated doctoral level research and statistics, quality reviews, respondent surveying, and more writing than I had ever done previous on a dissertation that spanned over 600 pages of meticulous study, analysis, and intricate synthesis. Such a flood of emotion that no dam could suppress.

An intensity of feelings that suddenly caught me off guard. Suddenly, I found myself in tears. Not of pain, but of joy, gladness, and relief.

I couldn’t help but think, ‘what a wonderful way to complete this journey after years of intensive study and diligent effort, and a day before my 39th birthday no less’.

So regardless of where you are in your educational journey, consider this to be proof that a doctoral degree is within your grasp if you but reach with all your effort and your best foot forward.

People would tell me there’s light at the end of tunnel when things looked darkest, but I didn’t believe them – I could have sworn they had to be referring to an oncoming train.

Not so, I discovered. Instead, I found that the light at the end is an incredibly brilliant and long lasting rainbow of accomplishment beyond description – so work hard, because it’s worth the view. ;-)

After receiving the news, I immediately called my wife who relayed to our youngest 6 year old son.

He asked “Does that mean that Daddy gets to go to the Doctor building and help people?”, to which she replied “No honey, he’s the other kind of doctor, the kind that doesn’t help people”. We laughed as we were caught in the moment.

She had been through the trials and tears, the pain, and the hardships over the last several years that when combined, were the essential core ingredients of my educational journey. She understood, and she shared in the moment with love and respect.

I hadn’t made it, instead we had made it together as a family.

I immediately posted on Facebook, Google Plus, and Twitter after hanging up with her. I Instant Messaged my friends, and called my parents. It was a good day, and a significant accomplishment in my life. Of all my Facebook posts, it received the most number of “likes” I’ve seen yet.

This reminded me that I was loved and supported by amazing individuals all over the world.

I’m now greatly looking forward to publishing my completed and publication ready dissertation entitled “Readers’ Trust, Socio-Demographics, and Acuity Influences in Citizen Journalism Credibility for Disrupted Online Newspapers”

More importantly, I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I have fond memories of yesterday, and today is the best day so far, but I’m positive that tomorrow will be even better. :-)

Credila Student Loans in India are pretty popular and I know several students who received education loan for studying abroad.

[schema type="review" url="http://www.happyschoolsblog.com/credila" name="Credila Student Loans for Studying Abroad from India" description="Credila Higher Education Student Loan for studying Abroad in countries like USA, UK, Australia and India." rev_name="Credila Student Loans" rev_body="Credila Student Loans offers loan approval without collateral or without I20. That's a huge Plus Point. Few students do have posted negative experience with Credilaa as well." user_review="5" min_review="1" max_review="5" ]

Note -  Happy Schools Blog is an affiliate with Credila. Having said that, views in this articles is not biased.

I received the following question from an very active fan Alagiavanan Saravanan ( and Dollars and Dreams member) about possibility of about getting Credila student loan without collateral.

Is it true that Credila offers loan without collateral for specific Top Univ. like CMU, UPenn, GATech etc.

I reached out to my Credila Student Loan contact to find out if   its even possible to Credila Student Loan without collateral. I had my doubts about a bank in India offering education loan for studying abroad without collateral.

I received the following reply

Dear Raghu – Credila do offer loans without collateral for some universities but they are subject to conditions like University Ranking, Co applicant profile, his/her Location etc.

Now, you know how to get Credila student loan without collateral.

Credila Student Loan Process – Reviews

I posted the following question in Facebook to learn about student’s experience with Credila

How would rate your experience using Credila for Studying Abroad student loan?

Responses  were either extreme positive or extreme negative.

Meyy Arun ( Studying in New York )

My experience was fantastic and def a 10/10. I changed my career when I was 27 (From engineering to medical side) Most banks refused to give me loans coz I was already 27, some banks capped off the loan amount that didnt meet my tuition expenses. Credila accepted to give me a student loan and disbursed them on time with no issues to my school in Syracuse. Infact towards the end of my education, I needed more $$ and Credila accepted that request as well.

Shru Gobs (Studying in New York)

Not a pleasant one. This was my experience in Hyderabad. They don’t give us the accurate initial details. And considering the stress for preparing about financials and you contact an agent, he was not really truthful. Promised that an EL of 40 lakhs is usual to the company , but didn’t sanction one at the last minute. No coordination among the employees. Each one gives you different Input about the status of your EL application. Would give a rating of just 1/10.

I observed the following  – Experience with Credila student loan approval process is either rated 10/10 or 1 out of 10.

I don’t know what could be the reason for difference in experience.  I can think about the following reasons ( I could be wrong )

  • Credila Employee handling your loan is inexperienced
  • Your expectations is different from what you experienced
  • You Failed to ask right questions
  • Credila failed to disclose all the fees and hidden charges

Here is my suggestion about Credila student loans for studying abroad.

Credila Student Loans might be good fit for your financial and family need. For some, it may not be a good option.

Credila is extremely useful in one way, that you can get loan approved even before getting admission or without I-20.

For those who are struggling to show bank balance to get I-20, Credila Student Loan is very good option.  Unless, you want to pay an agent who will deposit money in your account for few days, so you can get the bank statement and pay him  huge amount of money in fees.

credila student loan without collateral

Ask the right questions when you talk to Credila loan processing agent. Try to get deeper understanding about their loan process.

If  their program and policies align with your financial needs, then get loan from Credila. If not, you walk away and look for options with other banks.

Only way to find out if  Credila Student Loan will be good option for you is to complete this online application and talk to them.

phd student scheduleOne of my friends (a financial consultant) asked me once.. ‘What do you do all day? Do you even have a to-do list?’

We all know that PhD students do ‘research’. But if you come down to the specifics, many of us really don’t know what goes into a PhD.

Until a few years ago, even I was completely oblivious to the ins and outs of a typical PhD.

You must have read the timeline to complete PhD. Here is a tentative description of what your average day will look like in a PhD program

PhD : Year One

Laboratory rotations and Course work

  • 2-3 hours of classes/ journal club
  • 6-8 hours of laboratory work (This decreases during examinations)
  • 1-2 hours of reading papers at home (This increases during examinations)

By the end of the first year, you would have passed all your tests and found a lab that suits your professional goals and personal work habits.

PhD:  Year Two

First 6 months: Starting a project

  • 8-10 hours of laboratory work
  • 1 hour of reading papers for journal clubs/seminars
  • NO studying at home… YEAH!!

Second 6 months: Qualifying

A qualifying exam tests your capabilities of ‘thinking out of the box’.

Are you capable of doing independent research? Or is a PhD not your cup of tea..

Every PhD program does it differently.

However, as an example, you will be required to write a research grant on your own research idea, design experiments and think of hypothetical outcomes and then defend it in front of a committee.

  • 5 hours- reading, reading, reading …reading
  • 1 hour- getting frustrated- feeling stupid- walking around aimlessly
  • 5 hours- reading, reading… reading
  • 1-3 hours- writing
  • 3-4 hours of reading/writing at home

phd research workCongratulations! You’ve qualified!!

This is when the real research starts!

You will be working towards testing a hypothesis.

Your advisor will meet with you approximately once every week for a personal one-on-one meeting.

You will analyze your results together, talk about what experiments you will do next week and discuss your project in general.

PhD: Year Three- Five

  • 8 -12 hours of working in the laboratory
  • NO reading or working at home unless you choose to do so.
  • When you have enough data to publish a paper, there will be a few insanely busy weeks of repeating some experiments, writing, writing and more writing,
  • If you choose to write grants, again you will have a couple of crazy weeks in between.

End Year 5/ Beginning Year 6

  • Writing your thesis
  • Writing your paper
  • Cursing yourself for not saving important data/ taking blurry pictures..
  • Repeating some experiments
  • GRADUATING!!

Some graduate programs have alternate avenues for senior graduate students to build their career skills.

Grant writing workshops, teacher training and internships in industries are some of the examples.

Some other things to remember:

Most graduate programs have compulsory talks and presentation that you need to give each year.

It’s a mad rush to gather data and put it together before each. However, it helps you tremendously in taking a step back to look at your own progress and re analyze what you need to do next.

There will also be seminar/ talks every day that you may want to attend.

Finally, every graduate program is different.

So, don’t expect everything to go according to your plan.

That’s what graduate school is about.

You start with plan A, after a few months you move onto plan B. By the time you graduate, you’re probably on plan Y.

Repeat. Rethink. Redo.

Finally, don’t sue me if your program turns out different.

Behind The Scenes

I asked Dr.Alecia Wolf for a probable list of students from India who can share his/her experience. She referred me to Deepthi. After exchanging couple of emails, we decided to do the interview on Sunday ( last week).

I was supposed to record this last week, but Skype call recording software decided not to work. After moving the recording by a week, we still had record the interview twice. We started  recording and after 15 minutes, the interview was over. I said thanks and good bye.

Then, she realized that she missed few important points to share about her research and life in UT Tyler. So, we started recording the interview again.

In the end second conversation came out really well.  I bet you enjoyed watching it.

What do you think about this interview?

If you are recent graduate or current student, I would love to share your experience with HSB readers.  Just send me an email, we can schedule 45 minutes time for the recording.
