Except as noted below, the quant section turned out to be largely in line with my expectations. Very early on, I had a string of 8 questions of which 7 were data sufficiency! Halfway through the quant section I was running about 5 minutes ahead of pace. Nonetheless, as the section went on I started falling behind and had to guess on the last question, which was not conceptually difficult, but was mathematically time consuming so I ran out of time.

Verbal, on the other hand, was harder than I expected. I must have spent 7-8 minutes staring at the first two reading comprehension question I got. The hard reading comprehension passage put me behind pace at the 30% mark so I started to speed up, trying to earn back time by doing the SC and CR questions as efficiently as possible. By the 66% mark I was a full ten minutes ahead of pace, so I started to slow down and stared at difficult questions for an inordinate amount of time.

International Students Applications Decrease

Other notable things to observe

Economic downturn is a good opportunity to invest in education at a time when large pay rises are unlikely

The first is the drop in the number of international students applying to US business schools.

They are worried that they will be unable to get the required loans on matriculation – or employment on graduation.

Surprise this year is an increase in women students. At Wharton the figure is 40 per cent (up from 36 per cent)

As you can see Average GRE Verbal is 679. Most of the students writing GRE to get admission to Masters in US get score around 300 to 450. Now, after seeing the profile of students admitted, you get the feel for quality of students who get into Harvard Business School for MBA.

Also, in the GRE Range for Verbal, they have 800 score in GRE Verbal. Wow! that’s amazing. 800 in GRE Q is common, but 800 in GRE Verbal is never heard before.

So, do you think you have enough motivation and effort to score in GRE or GMAT in the above listed range to get into Harvard?

That’s the finding of a Kaplan survey of 260 business schools conducted this July and August by the test-prep giant, including 17 of the most selective business schools. Of those surveyed, nearly a quarter, or 24%, currently allows students to submit the GRE. But of the school surveyed that are GMAT-only (76% of the survey pool), only 4.3% indicated that they are planning to offer the GRE as an option for applicants.

MBA or MS

Many students are yet to decide if MBA or MS is right choice for them. Most students from India will have hard time making the decision, because of the exposure and information they have about MBA.

If you are thinking about MBA, because it will pay you high salary, then you are making wrong choice.

If you are think, technical degree is not for you and you are more into management type of person, then MBA is the way to go.

Atleast 2 years work experience is required to get full benefit from MBA.

You can read more about the survey from BusinessWeek.

Many students ask this question, so does Atish

Atish Asks

I have just completed engineering in electrical. I decided to do MS, but still in mind MS or MBA? …then two more question arises..
1.MS in which field?..which field is in demand?
2.MS in which university?
please solve my problem….. my engineering aggregate is 67%

MS or MBA in USA

Your decision to study in US after completing Electrical Engineering in India should be appreciated. Many students don’t even think about studying in US, because of time and effort involved in university admission procedure.

Having said that, selecting the field based on demand is NOT the right way. Basically you want some field that will pay you money. You can work for money for 6 months or maybe 2 years. After that you will not feel like working, if that’s the field you don’t love.

If you want to enjoy your work, you have to love the work/job you do. Selecting a field MS or MBA based on job and salary alone will not help you in your career.

MS or MBA?

If you read the article MBA to be or not to be, you will understand whats involved in Technical field and Management field. So, evaluate yourself, what kind of career you want. Talk to people in management and in technical field with experience. Understand what life will be after few years.

Then decie for yourself which field you want to study. Don’t decide on MS or MBA just based on job in demand or salary. You will not enjoy your life. Moreover it will look like hell, if you hate the job.

Also, studying MBA without work experience is not recommended. You will not be able to associate the theory from book to work situation. Without work experience, MBA will not be of much value. If you decide to go into MBA instead of Masters Degree, then work for atleast 2 years, then apply for MBA.

You don’t need work experience to study Masters degree in Engineering field, apply right now and you can complete M.S. degree in no time. You have the option to study MBA after completing MS. So, by completing MS is not the end of the road for you. Hope this answer helps. Good luck in deciding between MS or MBA
