The SAT is a hard test. It’s a scary test, probably built up in your mind to this insurmountable foe that will crush you at the slightest sign of weakness. But courtesy of the New York Times, here are 5 tips to help you on the SAT and get the best score you can.

Practice Under Test Day Conditions

“Practice makes perfect” is the old saying. But it’s not just how much you practice, but also how you practice.

Just doing the the practice questions over and over again will help you improve your score, but if you really want to succeed, you should practice like you are in the real SAT.

That means timing yourself on each section, printing out the test to complete on paper, and putting away all distractions for the time being.

By doing this, you can see how you will react when you get to the actual test and minimize surprises and help you on the SAT.

Brush Up on Your Vocabulary

Memorizing vocabulary sucks. It’s a dry and what feels like fruitless task, but it actually has some secret benefits. Not only does it help improve your score on the reading section, it can also help your score in the writing section because you are using bigger, more meaningful words.

But the best part about having a larger vocabulary is your ability to then use this skill on college and scholarship applications.

This is super valuable because this will help determine whether you get in and how much money you receive.

If memorizing vocabulary all at once seems daunting, just start with one word and day and you will see just how far that takes you.

Write a Longer Essay

It’s no secret that the essay portion of the SAT is probably the hardest part. You have 25 minutes to write whatever you can and are then graded on it.

But an MIT study found that longer essays receive higher scores. So just basically just writing a bit more can help you on the SAT, how great is that?

Filling two pages with coherent sentences and thoughts is hard already, let alone in 25 minutes.

The easiest way to deal with this is just to set aside scholarly examples in your brain, so that when you get to the SAT, which always has a general prompt, there’s sure to be one that will be applicable to the prompt.

Don’t Cram

While you may be able to cram for your high school midterm in a week or so, the SAT is a whole other animal.

Try to set aside at least 8 weeks where you can practice and study for the test and not feel stressed.

This will really help you on the SAT as you will feel prepared and ready to conquer it, rather than regretting not studying while you were doing other things.

Take Care of Yourself

This one is big. The last thing you want to do is go into the SAT with a sickness of some kind.

Stress and illness do not mix well. In the weeks leading up to the exam, get enough sleep each night, eat healthy, and exercise.

This will help you on the SAT as it all but guarantees that when you arrive to take the exam, you will feel well-rested and ready to conquer the test.

Listening to these tips to help you on the SAT can really help you get a much better score on the SAT.

5 Tips to Improve Your Timing on the ACT and SAT

The SAT and the ACT are a stress-filled roadblock on the way to a college education. The questions are tough and it always feels like you don’t have enough time. So how do you fix that? The New York Times has offered up some helpful hints to help you curb your time on the ACT and SAT.

Take Practice Tests

Practice tests allow you to see the type of material you will be facing on the test and also will give you a feel for how much time you should need on a section. Repeated practice will also help you internalize a pace, so that when you take the actual test, you can move through it at about the same speed.

Set a Target Score

By setting a target score, you allow yourself a margin of error to work in. If you think that you can score near a 40 on an ACT section, then go for it. But if you see yourself as just average, try shooting for a 23, which is 27 correct answers. Doing this allows you to possibly skip the harder questions and come back if you have time.

Don’t Stop on Hard Questions

This wastes so much time. Get all of the easy questions out of the way so you can get the highest score you can, then return to the harder ones if you have time.

Don’t Guess on the SAT

The makers of SAT have factored in a guessing penalty, which takes a quarter of a point for each wrong answer. Because of this, you want to be as accurate as possible, but also fast. However, the ACT doesn’t have this restriction, so when five minutes is called, just fill in the remaining bubbles at a fast pace and don’t worry too much about accuracy.

Adjust Your Pacing

The ACT math section allows 60 minutes for 60 questions.

However, the reading section only offers 45 minutes for 75 questions, which leaves you a little less than a minute and a half to read each passage and 30 seconds for each question.

So you have to learn strategies that help you avoid a time crunch.

Some people skim the passage first and then answer the questions, while others read the questions first and then answer them as they go through the passage. Basically, just do what is most helpful to you and try to stay relaxed about it.

 

While these tips are helpful, there is truly only one way to do well on the ACT and the SAT: Know the answers.

I’m in 11th Grade and and gonna take PSAT/NMST this October in my school. Can you suggest me good PSAT test prep books?  Looks like same types of questions appear in SAT test. So, I’m not sure if I  have to buy SAT prep books or PSAT prep books. Also, can you recommend some best PSAT Test Prep books for 2013.

There isn’t much of  differences between the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT test.

Get The Official SAT Study Guide  which is sometimes called as Blue Book.

Take 3 to 4 practice test from the Blue Book. By then you can  find your weakness.

For instance, if  PAT vocabulary  is a your weakness, then buy Direct Hits Core Vocabulary of the SAT.

If you still need more PSAT practice tests, then get Kaplan 12 Practice Tests for the SAT 2012 or other work books.

Kaplan PSAT Book Review

Bought Kaplan PSAT/NMSQT Premier 2013 book, 12 weeks prior to the 2012 PSAT in October, my son has completed all the tests including the diagnostic test. It’s really rather good PSAT test prep, he has consistently between 202 and 217, so I feel the tests are consistent and a fair reflection to the ‘real’ CB PSAT.
Compared to the Barron’s PSAT/NMSQT  16th PSAT prep, it’s better than the Barron’s, which for some reason doesn’t include a raw score/scaled score chart, so when adding your raw score, there is No comparison to the actual PSAT score rank, so you don’t get a 20-80 score or each Critical Reading, Math, Writing section, which is just annoying and frankly stupid, for that reason alone, Kaplan PSAT/NMSQT Premier 2013 is better test PSAT prep book.However, the Kaplan test prep questions are on average a little easier than Barron’s, the writing extracts are shorter and easier to read than Barron’s and the ‘Real’ PSAT so be aware, your score may not truely reflect your comparable CB PSAT score, but of the books available, I think Kaplan PSAT/NMSQT Premier 2013 is the best PSAT Prep book in addition to The Official SAT Study Guide .

Only 43% of SAT Test Takers Are College Ready

The data from college board says that, SAT scores have fall as more number of students took the SAT exam.  Most interesting of the the reports is number of students capable of attending college.  The study reveals that, only 43% of 1.6 million students are capable to attend the college.

Number of SAT test takers in 2012 – 1.66 million. Thats the highest number of SAT test takers ever in a year. Last year there were 1.65 Million SAT Test takers.

Average SAT Scores 2012

  • Critical Reading – 496
  • Mathematics – 514
  • Writing – 488

SAT average scores

The statistics show that

  • 45 percent were minority students (up from 44 percent in the class of 2011 and 38 percent in the class of 2008).
  • 28 percent reported that English was not exclusively their primary language (up from 27 percent in the class of 2011 and 24 percent in the class of 2008).

Is Passport Required for SAT?

Is Passport Required for SAT?

Answers is Yes and No. Depends on where you are goign to take the SAT Test.

According to College board

You are responsible for bringing a valid and acceptable form of identification each time you report to an SAT test center. It is your responsibility to ensure that your ID documents are up-to-date and available on the day of the test.

So, you may ask, what is considered to be  acceptable form of identification to take SAT Test?

SAT Test – ID documents must:

  • be issued by a governmental organization or the school which you currently attend
  • be an original document — photocopied documents are not acceptable
  • be valid and current — expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable, no matter how recently they may have expired
  • bear the test-taker’s full name, in roman English characters, exactly as it appears on the Admission Ticket (if the name is too long to fit on the Admission Ticket, the name on the ID need only match the part that appears on the ticket).
  • bear a recent recognizable photograph that clearly matches the test-taker
  • be in good condition, with clearly legible text and a clearly visible photograph

Examples of Acceptable ID for SAT

  • Government-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID card
  • Official school-produced student-identification card from the school you currently attend
  • Government-issued passport
  • Government-issued military or national identification card
  • College Board’s Student ID Form, which is available from your school counselor and must be prepared by the school you currently attend
  • Talent Identification Program ID or Authorization to Test form (allowed for grades seven and eight only; photo not required)

Is Passport Required for SAT in India?

Yes, to take SAT test in India, passport is Mandatory.

According to College Board

For SAT Testing in India, Ghana, Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan – The only acceptable form of identification is a valid passport with your name, photograph and signature. There are no exceptions to this policy.

For SAT Test takers in India, make sure you register for SAT with exact name that appears in the Passport.

I have answered so many questions due to mismatch between the names used for test registration and passport.

You are responsible for ensuring that the name you used to register exactly matches the name on the ID document(s) you will present at the test center. If you need to make a change to your name after registering, please contact Customer Service well in advance of test day.

I’m going to take the SAT on Jan. 26 2013. So, since I do not have a passport as of now, do I need to get it made? Or is any other form of identification acceptable? And if there isn’t, how many days will it take to get a passport, given that i’m a minor (16 yr old) and an Indian citizen by birth.

You do need to apply for passport and get it before January SAT Test date.

Passport is something that can’t me made :)

I’m not sure how many days it would take to apply for a new passport and get one. Check with your regional passport office about Indian passport issue time.

SAT Test Prep Coaching in India – Waste of Time and Money

Question -  Will attending SAT Test Prep Coaching  will boost SAT Test scores?

There is much confusion and sometimes compulsion in getting a coaching service for SAT, TOEFL, GRE , etc among many students.

I however digress with the concept as i have been preparing for the SAT on my own.

This advice might sound invasive but there is frankly no need for  classes. If you can read books, there are pretty detailed steps and tips in almost every major publication: Princeton Review, Barron,
Kaplan, etc.

The one true major obstruction and challenge is of course the  vocabulary.

Classes in no way will help you in the matter.

I can tell you this because I can compare my progress as well as that of my friends who decided to go to the coaching classes.

There is no  practical progress in his skill level.

The only methodology that does work is reading and writing.

You can easily improve your vocab by reading novels, but with Victorian English.

I read Jules Verne, classic Sherlock Holmes, etc. There are  other supplements too like reading newspaper, watching english movies without subs, writing essays, etc.

So, I would recommend you not to waste your time and money on classes but utilizing it in a way which would elevate your application. I myself am learning German as well.

SAT Test Prep – Waste of Money

New report finds that these test-preparation courses aren’t as beneficial as consumers are led to believe.

The report, to be released Wednesday by the National Association for College Admission Counseling, criticizes common test-prep-industry marketing practices, including promises of big score gains with no hard data to back up such claims.

The report also finds fault with the frequent use of mock SAT tests because they can be devised to inflate score gains when students take the actual SAT.

The association represents 11,000 college admissions officers, high-school guidance counselors and private advisors.

What is the best book for SAT US History and AP History?

I’m taking the SAT Subject Test – US History this year.

I wanted to know which is the bets book for SAT Us History for self study. I will be taking SAT US  History and World History.

I have the couple of books – Cracking the SAT 2 US History. I’m not sure which is the best book for SAT US History? Barron’s, Princeton Review, Kaplan? Which book would help me get a high score on the  SAT exam?

Princeton Review of SAT or AP History is good book to start. In addition to that, you may have to buy few more SAT US History test prep books.

AMSCO – SAT US History – AP History

Amazon Test Taker Review – This book is incredible. It’s disappointing that this book is hard to find and buy because it’s so much better than the other review books. A lot of people say REA is the best, but that’s just because they haven’t seen this one.

First of all, this book is organized incredibly well. Everything flowed into the next section nicely, but you could also skip around easily if you had weaker areas that you needed to review before the test.

Barrons AP History Flash Cards

Amazon Test Taker Review – Coupled with the AMSCO AP US review book, these flashcards helped me earn an 800 on the June 2012 SAT 2 for United States History. They draw your attention to details you might have otherwise missed. I highly recommend them!

REA – AP United States History

Amazon Test Taker Review – I took the AP US History test this year and I can honestly say that I would not hae gotten a 5 if it were not for this book. I started studying this 2 months before the exam, and then used the REA Crash Course, as suggested by the original REA, three weeks before the test. The two books combine together are the key to a 5. The regular REA is great for the essays because it has all the information you need to prove arguments and give historical information.

Study Plan for SAT US History

Now, you have to best book for SAT 2 US History. It will take 3 to 8 weeks of test prep time to complete these 3 Best SAT US Tet prep books.

Barron’s SAT US History book is much detailed and comprehensive compared to AMSCo, but that level of  review  might not be required to SAT U.S. History test prep.

HEY i’m a highschool junior and I had a projected 650 for the SAT critical reading from the PSATs but i worked through the practice sections (and there are A LOT of good practices in this book) and got a 740 after 2 weeks working through this book on the actual SAT. so yeah, it’s definitely helpful. Barron’s SAT Critical Reading Workbook also has a lot of good vocabulary practice and tip and several critical reading practice tests.
