Cost of Living in Germany for International Students

Following comment was posted by Alexander, who is  studying (Bachelor of Science) Industiral Engineering with special field in Electronics at the Fachhochschule Landshut.

Costs of Living per month in Germany

  • Accommodation : 200 – 500 Euro (depends)
  • Food – 300 to 600 Euros  (if you cook yourself about you will spend about 10 Euro a day, if you eat in Mensa you will spend 15 Euro a day, if you eat at restaurants you spend about 20 a day… it depends on livestyle)
  • Travel :  ~ 50 Euro. There are programs for cheaper travel. Depends on your City.
  • Office Supplies  ~ 50 Euro (Papers, Pens, Books)

The rest depends on you. You should plan accordingly because you might want to go out on evenings have some party or just get to know the area.

But you should think about at least 600 Euro a month.

If you need to save money. You might pay 800 Euro a month for living and accommodation.

i want to ask the following to all the people studying in germany. i’m honestly curious about it. are employers in india aware about german education? what is the brand equity of a german degree in the indian employment market??

whenever the genuine student finishes his course and returns to india, if he’s from usa-canada the indian employer usually takes it positively, and if from aus-nz-uk the good old desi jobgiver thinks he’s a rich lad who’s academically poor – what is it in case of Deutschland ( and other european nations like holland, norway, finland, sweden, etc )?

    • Germany has the most genuine research programs available and what i think is it depends completely on you, for how you perform, whether it is in usa or gemany, it doesn’t matter.

Hi Alexander, I would like to know more basic concepts of German education system. Tell me about student-faculty relation? How the Professor should be approached by a student for any discussion? What salutation do they like in English e-mails? I have communicated with a Professor and written the full Salutation every time “Prof. Dr. xx yy “is it alright? Once if they have given a positive feedback about joining the institute then what are the chances that he/she will definitely get the acceptance? Thanks in advance.

  9. @HSB Can u tell me about the part time jobs in Germany ?? What is the payscale in part time job for an international student ??

    • Just write like Proffesor ABC

    • @Venkat: It is not fixed…depends on the work as well as the company or university institutes….but generally it is aeound 12 to 15 euros per hour and you can work upto 20 hours per week during the semester and full time during breaks. However, often it’s not practical because of academic workload to work this much.

I study in Germany..My Expense is as follows:
    Euro 250 — House Rent
Euro 60 — Food (I eat at Mensa once in a week, Cook food at Home, This is maximum)
    Euro 80 — Insurance
    Euro 20 — Mobile
    Travelling is free
    Euro 10 — Office Supplies
So the total is 370 to 400… Consider 100 Euro Extra…. So in all expense should not go above 500 Euros…

All the above is as per my experience & considering the expenses in my city…

    • Rishabh – which city and university?

    • The estimate of 500 to 600 euros would be good for Indian students, even in expensive cities like Munich. In smaller towns the expenses are definitely lower especially for housing and transportation.

    • Can you tell us about how much you can earn from part time jobs, and are they easy to find?

    • Draconian Devil says:
