Following F1 Visa interview experience from Pavan is the first experience shared in Happy Schools Blog where he was asked to write an essay to verify the Test (TOEFL) Scores.

F1 Visa Interview Chennai 2012
Well my VISA experience is a bit strange and shaky.
VO is a middle aged Filipino lady. Counter no:15.
Me: Good Morning Mam!
VO: …….(Nothing)……Pass on your documents please!
So, Why Clemson? and What specialization in Mechanical engineering?Me: I came to know about Clemson back in my third year engg. I was working on a project in CFD and faced problems because of the computational limitations of my University (VIT,Vellore). Ultimately, I had to drop my project. I then went on to search for Universities with exceptional computational labs and found Clemson (has a supercomuter cluster ranked 62nd in the world).
VO: Oh! good. Any other admits?
Me: 3 admits Mam.
VO: good! What do you want do after your MS?
Me: Well, I want to start a training center in India and help train the rural graduates at a nominal fees, those who cannot afford US education.
VO: What do you want to train them in? And how do you expect to survive if you don’t get enough money?
Me: Advanced simulation software packages like Abaqus,Ansys,OpenFoam. etc. We will also act as a consulting company and earn the required funds.
VO: Very Good then, give me your score cards?
Me: ….(Gave my Toefl Card and was about to give my GRE score sheet…..)
VO: Tell me what reading passage you got in your TOEFL?
Me:( Wha? Are you kidding me????)….(.gave a big smile) Mam! I wrote it back in September 2011 Mam.
VO : I can see that. Now tell me?( matching my smile) you know I have been interviewing people for the last 16 years.
Me: Okay, I got a passage from archaeology about an island where fossils of a new species were discovered and something about filling the gap between Homo erectus and…..(She asked me to stop)
VO: Why don’t you go and wait, will call you.
Waited for almost an hour, they asked me to go to counter number 28
A young Indian Lady is there with my passport and toefl score card.
IL: Hi, Can I see your Gre score card please.
(Gave my GRE* score card) [*my gre 730V+770Q+4AWA]
IL: where have you given your GRE? and why is that you gave your Tofel in Mysore when Chennai is nearer.Me: Gave my gre at hyderabad. Then registered for my Toefl at Chennai on 24th september,2011. Due to a medical emergency I postponed my Toefl to 28th and because of the hustle I did what I did.
IL: please go and wait sir.
After one hour
They asked me find counter 26
IL: Do you have a pen?
Me: Of course! Yes.
IL: Take this sheet of paper and write an essay on any general topic.
Me: How about “Youth in Politics”
IL: Great! I will collect it in 15 mins
I wrote an essay for about 10 mins.(Nailed it, because I’ve recently submitted an article about “Hereditary Politics” to a local english weekly editor.)
She collected it and asked me to wait.
After 1 hour.
Counter no: 18:
A middle aged man in a suit : Sir, We believe that your scores are genuine and you seem to have excellent academic record.
Me: thank you! (Smiling)
VO: So, keep it that way even in the US. Congratulations! Your VISA will be couriered.
Me: Thanks!

hi i have applied for spring 2012 i am booking slot on december 2nd week i heard that who applies in decd they will not get visa , is it true???
OH MY GOD!! This is strange. I was expecting that they would finally call him to one more counter where they would make him sit on lie detector. Was it the VO or some FBI officer? Mine interview second time was so short. He just asked me which college I am going to, did you apply any other and why this one? My first interview was visa rejection but he didn’t ask anything about it.

Not everyone may be able to remember what they got in their TOEFL exam.Consulate officers should try to respect the effort that students take.Students from China,Taiwan,Korea easily get in without high scores in TOEFL.

verbal score 730 that men 98% score……..it is imposible……..my heart stopped………it is unfair to go to USA….. GO TO THE MOON………………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats but you could’ve avoided the hassle by giving the gre scorecard first. Even I got 119 in toefl, and when the VO asked me my toefl score, I told him the GRE total & verbal part first, after which I mentioned my toefl score.
Yeah! That would’ve helped. Still, getting my visa after all this is a great feeling and i’m gonna share this story for the rest of my life. So, in a way my visa exp is memorable

It’s kind of surprise to me to read about Fake TOEFL. What is Fake TOEFL score.
Doesn’t everyone register through ETS for TOEFL.
How do you know which TOEFL center is Fake.

I am also going to Clemson but in EE
me too gave GRE in hyderabad
got 114 in TOEFL and gave it in ahmedabad
I was lucky they didnt ask me to write an essay
This is the direct outcome of so many people doing TOEFL frauds. I don’t know what triggered it in OPs case, but if he can share more details like scores etc, we may be able to start building some data.
When the first VO asked my score cards, I should have given both GRE and TOEFL together. Instead she got carried away with my TOEFL(114) and didn’t check my GRE Verbal score. And once she reported her doubts to her officer, they have got to double check everything possible. One more thing that helped me is that my toefl center being ETS certified.

Congratulations for Visa being approved. I am preparing for my GRE and AWA on my own and planning to give it in December. What would you suggest me about giving the GRE at december and books you preferred ?
