F1 Visa Interview – Rejection Because of my Lie?

Raghuram Sukumar —  January 8, 2012 — 24 Comments

I am Rithvik and i applied for 4 universities and got an admit from one univ that is IIT chicago for Food Safety and Technology. I got my F1 VISA date booked on 22nd of December 1000am at Chennai here’s what happened

At the time of token assigning i told a lie for him stating that i haven’t changed my application form which i later realized that i did change it. (would this have caused for my rejection).

F1 Visa Interview

VO: Hello
me: good morning sir

VO: Pass your I 20 and the other document( i20, degree completion certificate, sevis fee, GRE, Toefl)
Me:I passed it to him and was waitin for him to shoot the questions

VO: So Which school are you going for ?
Me: pardon Please sir

VO: which University did u apply for?
me: IIT, chicago sir

VO: So, why this univ??
me: i started out very bad sayin ” the university is good and it has an MOU with FDA and IFSH which helps students get to work with the government funded projects.

VO: Which major are you applying for
Me: Food safety and Technology

VO: What’s your % in you Under-graduation
me: 68%

VO: any backlogs
me : None sir

VO: when did u pass out
me: 2010 sir( didn’t ask anything about what have you done from then, I thought he would)

VO: Checked out my Gre and Toefl scores(970 and 86)
me: I was positive enough that it was a 100% approval

VO: I think the requirements that you have presented us are not enough and i don’t think that you will complete the course work.
me: but the university was OK with me and my profile

VO: angrily replied ” that is not enough for the VISA interview sir”
me: Damn and issued a 214 (b)

thought he didn’t check my profile like checking out my transcripts, financial certificates CA statements and etc..,

I applied for the VISA Once again in order to try out my luck this time. This time prepared very well and was 100% sure that i would sail through where first time i wasn’t and i applied again for the Chennai consulate and got a date on 5th January, 2012.
this time it was another guy ( thought that i would get the same guy because he was just 2 counters away from where i got)

VO: I think we have examined your profile once and rejected you so what changes have you done from the first interview
me: None

and i could see his face changed with a NO visa approval for this guy

VO: so why did u apply for the VISA interview again
me: the first time i was not given chance for showing my documents and other information so i applied it once again

so he typed something

VO: so what’s your %
me: said

VO: I think that without any changes made attending the VISA interview is kind of complicated issue
me: but the first time i couldn’t prove my self by showing my documents

VO: i don’t need to see the documents sir and then took the 214 (b) paper again
me: what sought of changes do you require for my profile when i have everything requirement cleared

VO: its based upon your chooses of what improvement that you want to make sir but this time i don’t think we can approve your VISA sir.

SO please suggest me what are those loopholes where i couldn’t get through

so today i got rejected by the embassy for F-1. Check this out. I am a basketball player and want to get trained in the states.. for Pro level basketball or maybe Post grad level college so that i can get into NCAA and etc. So obviously I am going to study along. Basically, I got rejected coz I have done my UG already so i cant get secondary level degrees. I thought we live in a democratic country and USA too.. So If i want to train myself and prepare myself again for PG level. What is your problem thats something I dont understand. My course is hardly for 10 months . I still dint get it. They did not even check any documents. I was just handed over that 214 (b) stuff. Those people dont know how pro level basketball and related studies work and I became the victim. Sad story

  2. do u think guys 74 is good score in toefl………m applying for associates degree in computer science…….should i proceed further ..i have i20 from a college.

    • In which way did u think it was good score?

    • Nope.. Even if you get into the university.. they will ask you to “learn English”…. which is going to be atleast $2000-$3000…. Who knows the university from which u got Admission may even cost you more in the name of “Language Proficiency or Enhancement” which will not be mentioned in any part of your I20.. so its better u take a retest so that you are going to spend max of $200..
      Good luck.!!!

      • @Keerthana:I dont think the university will ask for a language enhancement for 74 .basically 74 is just not a bad score as well as good score,it stands as a score where the English proficiency can just be accepted !!

  3. VO: So, why this univ??
me: i started out very bad sayin ” the university is good and it has an MOU with FDA and IFSH which helps students get to work with the government funded projects.

am a usa councellor nthis is where u made it clear tat ur gona settle there…i hope u unerstd wat i said

  4. When you are asked with questions like :
“WHY THIS UNIVERSITY?” answers should be in a way like, the university provides a good ambience for students to studycourse curriculum is really good (should not be a generalised statement.. tell them some of ur interests which the university satisfies) U can also quote some projects ,research or works associated with ur dept.. that would serve u as a platform for ur career… a great living opportunity… From ur experience, I feel that when the VO asked u why this university? You should not have told abt getting into govt funded projects/// though finding a job in the U.S. once graduation is the ultimate motto for any aspirant for education in the U.S., it should not be showed up.. The interview in Chennai consulate is pretty hard to clear.. coz , the VO takes hardly 2 mins.. Questions will be indirectly stating whether you will stay back in the U.S. after ur course completion or return to ur country? So see to that, u dnt give them an option to sense ur plans after graduation …All the best..

  5. 1. GRE Score

    3. No offense but u seemed a bit insolent

It appears from the postings those having low score in GRE and Toffil generally
apply for the Universities in USA. India is having good number of world class
university where everything is taught in international standard. Do not keep any
illusion for USA unversity as in present situation job prospect for Indian is very
low even in top IVY league school due to recession

  7. Tough Luck bro , Prepare well the next time or try Canada .
    It is good :)

  8. I would suggest all the guys to change the profile or atleast change the university or bring improvement in financials. But your case is complicated you have everything alright. When the visa officer told you that you are rejected you would have atleast asked for a suggestion or improvement by the visa officer. The most pleasing way to ask for the improvement or suggestion is that. “Sir, Can you please give me a suggestion so that I can do it when I appear for the next time” By this you will get the reason why the visa officer rejected you and also you will also get an idea that what improvement you have to do next time when you appear for the visa inteview. Even I was rejected twice but the third time I changed the University and I got the visa.
    Best of luck

    • Hi abdul,
What VO asked about ur university?
I need ur suggestion because i am in the same place where you have been before.
      Kindly reply soon
      Regrads,
      Kumar

  9. HEY GUYS MY VISA GOT DENIED AT HYDERABAD ON 5TH JANUARY 2012

    ME

  10. could be your word on job from Funded projects , and the lesser scores add injury !
But , what has now passed away ! nothing ? so , is better if u add value to ur profile and try it some tym later again ! wishes !

  11. Maybe the VO did not feel that your scores were not good enough. It is not necessary that he should look at all the documents. I feel that you probably thought that the main reason you did not get the visa is because you could not show your documents. So trying for the second time with no change in the profile was not good. And then, some of your answers are not assertive. for example:
    1. “but the university was OK with me and my profile”.
    2. “the first time i was not given chance for showing my documents and other information so i applied it once again”
    3. “but the first time i couldn’t prove my self by showing my documents”
    4. “what sought of changes do you require for my profile when i have everything requirement cleared”
    They sound quite aggressive

  12. People 970 is a descent score but not a low score ! 86 in toefl is a low score because the average score lies around +90.

  13. Your GRE and TOEFL scores are low i.e. 970 and 86. Appear once again and try to get a decent score in GRE and TOEFL next time. I did the same in first i got 94 in toefl and 1190 in GRE. The next time i appeared (after 8 months) i got 1470 in GRE and 108 in TOEFL. Trust me it works don’t hurry. You will make it one day easily and respectfully, just focus on making your profile concrete

  14. Emmanuella — Check with Concordia university .

  15. Hey IIT Chicago is a low ranked university. Also your starting is not interesting !!!
Your GRE score added to it. So you could not get Visa !!!
Try to apply to any other university with new GRE, TOEFL scores !!!
    Best Luck !!! :)

  16. Your GRE score is low (970). Also your TOEFL score is not very good. How were you 100% sure that he would issue you a Visa when you just mentioned these weak points ?.

  17. Your GRE score is low (970). Nor is your TOEFL very high. How were you 100% sure that he would issue you a Visa when you just mentioned these weak points ?.

  18. Usually those who apply for VISA interview 2nd time will change their university. In your situation, do you think your college standard is same as your GRE score. I dunoo about GRE score requirements for Food technology, but 970 out of 1600 seems to be a low score. Isn’t it? I personally feel this could be the reason. They would have had a standard for IIT chicago. As per that, they might have a thought that only those who score some minimum in GRE will be able to get through MS. Its just my personal opinion.

  19. This is a great site. I really appreciate what you are doing becuase its not easy getting help when u live in a third world country. The information you put up is very helpful. Can you pls help me choose a renownd university in the field of development studies in Canada for a master’s degree program? Thanks in advance
