Dear HSB,
Please create a separate blog for fall 2012 PhD students, it’s my humble request.
HSB please guide me on this one…I have recently received an admit for PhD Pharmaceutics program for Fall 2012 session with full scholarship from University of North dakota and have accepted the offer.. do i need to show anything else apart from my scholarship letters as a source of support/ financial documentation during Visa Interview, will that convince the VO?…your prompt help will be much appreciated!! thank you in advance.
Hey Priyanka, presuming your I-20 mentions all the financial support you’ll be receiving (the tuition scholarship and assistantship), you don’t need to bring any other financial documentation. But, make sure you book an interview date much in advance because PhD admissions usually get a pink slip which takes another 20-30 days for processing.
You should be all set otherwise, congrats for the admit.

I too got an offer from UNT for Phd chemistry and accepted the offer.I didnt receive the i 20 , will be geting it soon in hand.In the offer letter it is said that I will get tuition scholarship and assistantship (right now the assistantship is given for first 2 semesters )and when I enquired came to know that the scholarship will be extended to the further years too.but when I go for visa interview, I will have to show financial documents or not, pls reply .I have a scholarship of $200 per month and outstate tuition waiver.Instate tuition I will have to pay from my scholarship ,HSB pls reply.

If you get 100% waiver then you need to show just the living expenses.

Hi pavithra, i too got 1160 in GRE and 92 in TOEFL. I got admission in PhD in Biological sciences with this score. You can try for FIU,Miami, Univ of North texas,Univ of texas,dallas, upstate medical college,NY. Sometimes work exp counts but it entirely depends on GPA,Scores and recommendation letters.

hi…even i have applied to GSU for PhD in Biological Sciences…the online application status still says that “decision remaining”..even i am worried..i did contact the graduate school and the department, but they said that they will inform me as soon as the decision is made..i guess this means that they have not yet made any decisions..

I 20 recently!!i suggest you call up the graduate director- chemistry(Giovanni Gadda) or Grad co ordinator(Will Lovet) they are nice wud tell you abt the updated status!!

No..but the prof who has given me a chance to work with his has research interest similar to mine(mentioned in S.O.P)…i think u shud give dem a call coz orientation is on 15th aug n they also know that u need to clear your visas too!!
Give them a call tpo confirm if ur application is yet to review, selected or rejected!!

i had mailed them, to G Gada, lowet and Joyce kane from grad office. i had been mailing them since a long but i havent received any communication back from them . I know its getting late but aleasst they should respond to mails atleast..

In order to apply for a PhD most universities ask for a good amount of research experience, preferably with publications. In case one does not entirely meet this requirement, would that weigh down his/her chances of getting an admit?? Also, are there any universities that waive the requirement of research publications??

However, I have not received funding, which is my major concern. Does anyone have any helpful ideas and information regarding scholarships for Indian students going overseas? In which consulate you gave your visa interview? I have given in Delhi consulate. It is taking time in case of delhi consulate to get cleared in 221g. Usually it takes 3-4 weeks to clear in 221g.

For US you need to write GRE and TOEFL if you will not write it will decrease your chances to get visa. That is why I will suggest you to give GRE and TOEFL. No one can suggest you any university. You need to search for the University (please don’t take it otherwise). It’s your interest. When you search the profile of University and professor and will communicate withe the prof. Then only you will come to know which is good for you according to your profile.
PS: For PhD, I recommend before sending application make contact with professor.
Most unis want GRE and Toefl…and ya..there are many sites which enlist universitis according to the subjects..but its best if u search for the unis themselves..it will take time…for eg, I went through the sites of almost 250 universities and it took me aroun d 4-5 months..but its worth it..that way ul be acquainted with the nature of work there and also decide the best fit for ur genre of work. and ya..do communicate with profs before applying, especially if u r for phd.

Contact means: mail them your cv and read about the research work they are doing. and write that you are interested in the research of them. Include one or two lines of the research work.

I had applied for fall 2011 phd chemistry but have got 5 rejects, 1 admit which is without funding and 2 univs say tat application is still under review!!
last week i got a mail from a graduate coordinator, who had marked graduate director in CC(this was from 1 of the 2 univ which is still reviewing my application) asking if i ws free or i have accepted any offer n following day i replied to him tat i was free to accept offers and i even asked them d status o my application, but its been like over a week now n donno wats wid dem coz they didnt reply back!!! wat shud b d tentative meaning??Its really confusing me, coz i am left wid no hopes now:/
Call them. Sometimes they don’t reply. In that case it’s better to call them.
got a call!!finally along wid stipend and tuition waiver!!and to top it all dnt have a lab rotation 2 but after recieving the acceptance letter prof wants to talk to me abt the subject!!tis scares me !!does this mean dey can still reject me??coz i havnt got the I-20 yet

There is no need to worry about the talk to prof. He/she will discuss about the work which you need to do. Don’t worry about this, just a normal talk. I think it will be via skype.

@ Pravesh Shah: Dude no one knows about your interest. Even if we know we can’t search. There are so many universities in USA. You need to search univ which fall under your area of interest.
For that contact prof and menton your score in your mail. If they find you a good candidate they will reply you back. In most of the cases PhD comes with funding. Dude you need to take some steps by yourself. All the best.

@ sandeep: It’s a good score. As you wrote that you are already in contact with professors. Then why don’t you apply in those Universities.
Please don’t take it otherwise. No one can suggest Universities for you. It depends on your interest. Search Universities according to your interest. If you need any kind of help. You can get help with one website. Petersons.com. This website helped me to search Universities according to my interest.
You have a decent GRE and TOEFL score. Apply one of high profile university and one low profile which suits to your score So that you will be on safer side.

And if I am considered as international student then Do I need to submit all the bank documents, financial declaration? I think dates for fall 2011 is over now. Make contact with prof by emailing your CV. These are the very basic steps but most important steps.

you got good profile, the selection of the universities should be done entirely depending up on your research interest, you need to go through profiles of the professors in different universities and choose them accordingly, if their current/research interest match yours then mail to those professors u are interested to work with, if you get a good reply from them then continue with your application process with that university. but do the selection process on your own which fetches a lot in your research career. For that you need to contact graduate co-ordinator. Or see the deadline on Univ website. Start emailing them.

Yeah GRE and TOEFL is compulsory, even if you get admission without GRE and TOEFL, it can create some problem in your visa interview.
First give GRE and TOEFL.
