Dear sir, I’m a third year computer engineering student studying under pune university. I appeared for mock GRE and scored nearly 1400 so I’m confident of earning a stellar score in GRE which I’m planning to appear for during mid October this year. But the problem is that i have a horrible undergrad academic record standing with a pathetic 51 percent.
I have gone through hundreds of blogs and websites which provide guidance for graduate school admissions, nearly all aspirants have much better GPAs and I’m beginning to get the low GPA blues. Can you please advice me on my situation. Should I drop this GRE thing and strive for something much more attainable. I can manage some strong recommendation letters and a neat sop, but the minimum requirements of most of the universities are higher than what I have to offer. Are there some ways to mitigate the ill effects of awful undergrad transcripts? please help me out of this..
Answer:
No worries, Pune and Mumbai University’s GPA are less. Universities in U.S. are aware of that fact. Universities from South India, like Anna University, Bharathiyar University offers higher scores like 80 to 90%, but all of my friends who graduated from Pune or Norther India Universities have low GPA, so thats not a major factor. And Again, GPA is not the only factor to get admission. So, get rid of the blues and think about greens($$).

I am a chemical engineering graduate from NIT Durgapur. I want to pursue my M.S. in USA but my cgpa is 6.46. I am planning to give GRE in january 2011 for admission in the april session. Should I at all give GRE? I am asking this question as if I score high in GRE can I get any scholarships as it is impossible for me to bear my own costs there as i am from a middle class family. By the time of giving my GRE i will get two papers published. One in a national journal and one in an international journal. Will these things help me in getting admissions?

I am studying in 3rd year enng also from pune university.
I got 2nd class in 1st year. Higher second class in 2nd year and 1st class in sem 1 of third year. I ‘m expecting an overall first class in third year.
also I”ve scored very high gre marks i.e. 1550. Do you think I will get funding from any university in the US?? I am not looking for top level universities but middle level ones which will help in the funding.
Also for pune university how are the gpa’s calculated? cause everyone gets pretty low scoring marks. Even distinction is at 66%

you are doing great by scoring 1410 in GRE, stupendous score reddy,
you got bright future in securing M.S-MECH, In US universities.
look for safe universities since the cost of education in US is quite expensive
if you or your sponsors can meet the cost, then you can even apply for better university where the tuition cost will be 60 to 70k us$ for two years.including living cost.
you have come to this blog fortunately.this blog is wonderful guide for M.S or PHD aspirant

My name is Ram and I have the same problem as many, I have low GPA I have 57.77% my class topper has 74%, I graduated from university of Calicut and a majority of students have got only early 60′s or so %.
I have a GRE score of 1380, I have GATE score of 89 percentile, I have won 2nd Prize in National level Paper fest, I had a lot of arrears and a lot of mark list to show for will I get admission in any university and will I get scholarship?
I also have Teaching experience in Mechanical engg. and worked for a Short time as CAD engineer and Instructor at CAD center a privet organization.
Should I keep my hopes still?(waiting eagerly for the reply)

This probably is my first inquiry following a long time of being a fun of this blog.My name is Ato. I’m from Ghana. I hold a BSc.Mathematics from the Prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology-KNUST.
Our results are calibrated in CWA-cumulative weighted averages. I graduated with a second class honors in the lower division with a CWA of 55.38, which with the guide of how some renowned universities in USA calculate their GPA results in a GPA of 2.1 Regardless of this poor performance which I definitely can explain how it came about, I want to pursue a Masters degree in Financial Mathematics or any other related Mathematics course. I am yet though, to take my GRE test. I want to know if my dream could be fulfilled in USA. Must I also take TOEFL ? With this my background, under what circumstances could I qualify for any financial aid? I would be grateful if somebody could lift me out of my troubled state with some directions. I have a cgpa of 7.3 (in BITS Pilani, CS)after the end of 3rd yr. 1st sem.
Still, there are 3 semesters left and I can escalate it to arnd 7.8, 7.9 towards the end of 4th year.
I am in a terrible fix of choosing btw GRE / CAT..
Kindly, very frankly evaluate my chances of getting into a decent US university w or w/o aid. I can work on my resume and my recos, projects and ob the GRE… but i wonder if i am fighting a lost battle…

Sir i am a student of IIT Delhi and want to go for MS through GRE but the problem is that i dont have a very good cgpa and i also have 2 courses back.I want to know how much do the course backs matter in admissions in the top universities. I do have done some good projects and working really hard to publish a research paper related to my projects.

I have lot of technical accomplishments.
2 projects from DRDO .
2 papers published in National Level Symposiums.
And lots of projects that fetched me accolades in college ..
I also have 1.2 yrs work ex as a JAVA programmer and hold 4 certifications (will be 2 yrs when I join).
I have also boot strapped a robotics company.. My only drawback is
my low acads .. Please give me some tips to over come it and get

But I have a low CGPA of 6.5 which I can increase to 7.0 till my 4th year,which is still low. Please let me know if I should go for GRE. Does the university from which we do Btech matter?
To how much extent does the CGPA play role in gaining scholarships in top US universities? are there any other factors?

I expect a score of 100+ in Toefl.
My Average is about 62.3% from Mumbai University.
Considering a good SOP and good letters of recommendations, what chance do i have of getting admitted to universities in the top 20?

I was really impressed by the way u had answered to all the queries. I gave my gre recently and ended up getting a low gre score 940(v-340, quants- 600). I used to get 1100+ in power prep and mock tests, but sadly ended up in this score. But I have an aggregate of 72%(BE- E&C – VTU, bangalore ) . I have been doing well in all my academics and am pretty confident about toefl too. Can u please help me out and suggest me few decent universities where i can get into
Shiney – Consider retaking GRE and improve your scores above 1100.

& here is the problem zone aggregate of 52.73% (from visveshvaraiya technological university) with 2year backs in 2nd year.. have been doin fairly from the 5th sem onwards…with 5th 60% 6th sem 61%… hope to do much better in coming sems… i would like to know if there is any chance for me to pursue my masters (MS) in electronics from any decent US university? if yes could u please suggest a few names…plus one more ques are there universities which consider only our last four sems marks or GRE score.. sorry for such a lengthy query… but wanted to be sure before taking any decisions and who elae can help me better than you sir…

@ainandrita – You have asked thoughtful questions. 1350 is very good score. Infact in recent comments, I haven’t seen 1350 score in long time. 52.73% is decent enough to get admission.

Sir, I am 3rd Year Computer Science student from NIT Jaipur. I have not been able to get a good GPA and am currently standing at 6.5. However I can raise it upto 6.7. In a mock test for GRE I managed to get 1300 score and so I’m confident about getting a good score in GRE. Will I be rejected because of my low CGPA?
If not can you suggest some good universities both inside and outside of US which will accept this score.
