I’ve just started to expand my business. I’m at the point where there is too much work for me to do single-handedly. Hence, I recently found myself back in the familiar world of recruitment. This time, I am recruiting someone for my own team.
Like many managers, I put an advertisement online, explaining in detail what my business does, what I am looking for in a potential candidate, and I asked them to attach a resume and write a cover letter where they were to answer a bunch of questions as part of the selection criteria.
Applications came flooding in.
I received 60 in less than 24 hours – 50 of those, I instantly put into the ‘no’ pile. Mainly for the following reasons:
- Nothing about their application stood out. I was left feeling very ‘blah’ post reading their documents;
- Spelling and grammatical errors (a multitude of them) immediately had me thinking that this person has little attention to detail, and I can’t afford to have someone like that on my team. I need to trust that person implicitly;
- It looked as though some applicants put absolutely ZERO effort into their cover letter. In fact, it was as though they had fired applications off to every job in that category without tailoring their application or even answering my questions. Some were even addressing different jobs altogether!
- I asked applicants to attach a portfolio. Now, this was another point of interest. Some portfolios lacked ‘zing’. Things were missing, some items made no sense, mistakes were made, and some couldn’t operate the application system and explained that they would send a portolio tomorrow, only to send me an email later giving me an excuse as to why they couldn’t do it (remember, the excuses don’t matter. You must deliver what you promise, or risk losing face forever).
Overall, I was not impressed at the number of suitable applicants.
Out of that many applicants in such little time, I thought I would have more to choose from.
What does this means for you?
It is easier to stand out amongst the crowd. As long as you keep a couple of things in mind:
This makes a huge difference. Don’t try cut this corner, because more than likely, what will end up happening is your resume will end up in the bin, and you will send applications aimlessly, never understanding why you’re not progressing.
Amend your resume if need be. Optimize your cover letter to be specific to this particular job.
Check your spelling and grammar. Have someone else double-check your work. There is no excuse for these mistakes, and managers aren’t very forgiving on this front either.
Address the employer’s questions. Attach ALL relevant documentation that you’ve been asked to. Keep your word, and overall, be the kind of person that YOU would like to work with!
This may not surprise you, but the person that I will interview first, without a doubt, is someone that I googled.
You WILL be surprised to hear though, that I based my decision on a Youtube video!
Out of the 5 finalists in the running, I was only able to Google one of the candidates. Then, not only was I able to Google her, but a video came up of her on Youtube.
This meant that instantly, I felt like I was already connecting with her.
I could see into who she is, and into what she believes in. What I saw left me with a good impression.
Her video showed that she cares greatly about her work, and wants to make a difference, which stuck with me.
Through this video, I was able to get insight into her personality, insight into what matters to her, what it would be like to engage in a conversation with her, and I could tell that her communication skills were impeccable.
These are all very important attributes to me. I felt like I was making a safer choice. Which is exactly how you want YOUR future manager to feel about you.
An online presence validates your past, gives credibility to who you are today, and allows people to track the kind of person you become.
A Youtube video however, as a part of your online presence, takes you into a whole different ball game. It’s like super-charging your job application. It made the other 4 remaining candidates no longer in the same league.
This is because it takes something to record a video of yourself and place it on the internet. Everyone who has ever tried, can empathize.
It takes courage, and it takes knowing who you are and what’s important to you, and I highly appreciate that effort.
Who would have ever thought that Youtube can help you get a job?
