Good GRE Score for US Universities Admission
October 6, 2008 by Raghu
I was reading through the comments to respond and I did find one common question among those comments about GRE Score. Same question was asked in different flavor by different students
- What is Good GRE Score?
- What is the minimum GRE Score required for admission to U.S. University
- I scored 950 in GRE, is that score good enough to get admission?
- I want to PhD in biotechnology, what is good GRE Score for graduate school admission
- What is minimum GRE Score required for admission in M.S. Computer Science
So what is Good GRE Score?
I’m really not sure how to answer the question “What is good GRE Score”. I’m sure, they are still in the process of learning about GRE Scores and how this whole U.S. Admission process works. I strongly suggest them to read the free e-book Student Guide to U.S. Universities.
I think what they want to know is average GRE Scores required for admission to universities or minimum GRE Score required for admission. But, there is nothing called good GRE score or bad GRE score.
There is only one GRE Exam Score, i.e what you have scored and its now up to you, to find if that score is sufficient enough to get admission.
Good GRE Score Examples
If you apply to few universities, get admission, then I-20 and visa, then we could say that GRE test score is good or maybe not. But, there are other questions that you can see above, which is difficult to answer. There are so many colleges and Universities, responding with one answer like “Minimum GRE Score required for admission with PhD in Biotechnology with scholarship is 1000″ is not possible.

is my analytical too low for admission to a PhD program in neurosciences in ivy league or other very good us universities??
Hi! i have got 870 in GRE and i had completed my B.tech in Biotcnology with 72% can i get addmission in US university for Phd. in Genetics,or i would gave GRE again in november.!! i know this score is not sufficiant, but is there any chance of addmision???
The most important criteria while applying to us universities is the subject you are applying and GRE score.
For the top 50 universities you should have a score above 780, give and take 10 points, in quantitative for any chance of being considered.
why this is so?
The topmost sought after fields are
1.Computers
2. Electronics & Electrical
3.Either Bioengineering and Biotechnology or ? Mechanical Eng.
4.Mind you, US universites do not have a separate Electrical and Electronics. Everything comes under Electrical Eng.
Now Every department will have about ten seats
So Say Caltech has 30 seats for the top three fields (Masters)
So the top 50 universites will admit 1500 candidates. Among this say 40 % max will be Alien candidates
So say roughly 700 candidates ALL OVER THE WORLD WILL COMPETE. CHINA INDIA BRAZIL KOREA EUROPE ETC
but the situation changes if you want to go for a LESS sought after field .
But for the top 50 universites will have the same demand for their other engineering fields TOO.
One more thing. To, be very specific scores change on application basis year to year .For top 50 universities it should be in the 90 percentile range. Remember that your GRE score is valid for 5 years. If you have scored more than 700 quant then lower your expectations to tier 3 universites in this or next ACDYR(academic year)
I myself got Quant 740, 80 percentile and Verbal 700, 97 percentile, Essay-4.5/6
No chance in Biotechnology in the first 50.
