How to convert academic percentage (1 – 100) and CGPA(0 – 10) score to GPA (0 – 4.0)?

Every student when filling out the graduate school application try to find GPA Calculator. I was in the same situation and few years back searching for different ways to use the GPA Calculator.

I sent emails and posted messages in the groups, asking about methods used to how to calculate GPA ( Grade Point Average). I was not able to find the procedure to do the calculate gpa, but today I know the answer.

GPA 4.0 Scale

I got one email asking for profile evaluation and he said GPA of 4.0. So, I wrote back and asked him how did you calculate GPA. His reply was, he just assumed GPA of 4.0, since he didn’t know how to convert gpa. Universities convert academic percentage to GPA in order to calculate the academic capability of the student and reject those applications that doesn’t satisfy minimum GPA.

There is no universal way to convert Academic percentage to GPA. So, how universities convert academic percentage to GPA. Answer is subjective and varies between universities. But before explaining some formulas used by colleges, let me explain how Grades are calculated in U.S. Colleges and University.

What is Grade Point Average (GPA)

Percentage system( 1 to 100) is used to grade a students performance in some countries, similarly, in U.S. Universities use GPA for grades.

GPA and Percentage – Are they related or equivalent

Even though both the system evaluates the students performance, they are not the same or its not possible to equate both the grading systems. So, can we calculate gpa from percentage?

How to Calculate GPA

Like percentage, Grades will be assigned to student for each course. Grades are A = 4.0; B = 3.0; C = 2.0 ; D = 1.0; F = 0; And for each course based on difficulty level weights will be assigned. Its called Credit Hours.

Usually Graduate courses in Masters program will have 3 Credit Hours. For our example lets assume all 3 courses have 3 credits each. Lets say at end of the semester, professor assign you following grades

  • Grade B to Course X
  • Grade A to Course Y
  • Grade A to course Z

GPA is calculated as follows

Total Grades = Sum of (Grade * Credit Hours) = B*3 + A*3 + A*3 = 3*3+4*3+4*3 =33

Total Credit Hours = 3+3+3 = 9

GPA = Total Grades/Total Credit Hours = 23/9 = 3.66

And the way in which Grades are assigned is another whole topic of discussion. Students performance will be evaluated throughout the semester which includes Home work, Programming Assignments, Pop Quiz, Exams, Presentations, … Now, you will have an understanding of the Grading System in U.S. and its very clear to say – Percentage will not exactly correlate with GPA calculation. But, Universities will have some general mechanism to convert percentage to GPA and that varies with each University. They have their own GPA calculator.

If you are still not satisfied with explanation, Percentage to GPA Converter formulas will give an idea about various methods available to convert to GPA

So, you really can’t convert academic percentage or CPGA to GPA. Best way to to say is mention your current academic percentage and Colleges will know what to do with your percentage score.

Application Process

Next step is select the right University that matches your profile, instead of randomly selecting university based on the input you heard from your friend’s friend. You can follow 12- Step University Selection process.

While filling out online application, make sure you dont make these common 11 graduate school application mistakes that will potentially delay the admission processing.

Dear

our percentage GPA equivalence chart
67-77 ==> 3.4
78-87 ==> 3.7
>87 ==> 4.0
My aggregate % is 73 according to my uni equivalence criteria my GPA is 3.4 interesting thing here is that Position Holder of my department % is around 78 and his GPA is 3.7

question: will our GPA top up by 0.4 or it will remain 3.4? and 3.7? or mine will become 3.7 and position holder’s 4 ?
and while attempting for admission is it fruitful to mention position holders GPA ?

In India a bachelors degree(b.tech) with 75 – 80 % ( on scale of 100 )is considered as good and somewhat a high percentage :) but while calculating GPA it comes out to be around 3.1 which doesn’t fulfill the eligibility of universities in US ( some demand at least 3.25 GPA in bachelors) . are the universities aware about the fact in India student with 75- 80 % in bachelors is among the top students of the college .

then how should i fulfill the condition of min. GPA of 3.25 with my 79%

how do I convert my 2.04 GPA which is based on a 5.0 scale to the U.S 4.0.for e.g, in my country, a C+ gives you 2.0 and is 50-54% but a 50-54% in U.S is a B, therefore 3.0! I need help as the MBA schools on the west coast are evaluating my GPA as 2.04 on a 5 point scale!

Indian GPA Conversion
Marks are converted as follows:
1.For a grading scheme with a 40% minimum passing mark, marks are converted to letter grades using the following scale:
60 – 100% A
50 – 59% B
40 – 49% C
0 -39% F*
* Note: In cases where exams which have been failed and successfully retaken, the F’s are not considered when converting the GPA.

2.Using the maximum marks possible for each exam in which a given mark was earned, a maximum mark total is calculated for A’s, B’s and C’s, and F’s.
3.The maximum mark total for each mark is multiplied by the value of the mark, with the value of A being 4.0. B 3.0, and C 2.0, giving a quality point total for each mark.
4.A grand total is calculated from the maximum marks totals and also from the quality points totals.
5.The quality points grand total is divided by the maximum marks grand total and the result is the student’s cumulative GPA.

Sample GPA conversion for a student who earned the following marks:

%age Max. Grade
62% 100 A
70% 100 A
86% 100 A
60% 100 A
37% 50 A
Tot. 450

54% 100 B
58% 100 B
51% 100 B
55% 100 B
50% 100 B
Tot. 500

45% 100 C
41% 100 C
32 75 C
Tot. 275

%age Grade Max. Marks Value Quality_Points
60-100% A 450 4 1800
50-59% B 500 3 1500
40-49% C 275 2 550
0-39% F 0 1 0

Total – 1225 – 3850

GPA = 3850/1225 = 3.14

This Student’s GPA is 3.14

Thanks for visiting Happy Schools. Subjective with respect to universities. I have also stated ‘There is no universal way to convert Academic percentage to GPA.’

You really cannot convert % to GPA.
