in GRE

If you look at GRE Score Report, it will include the scores in Verbal, Quantitative and AWA section, also GRE Percentiles scores. GRE percentile is different from percentage.

Some cases when universities will specify minimum GRE requirements for admission in terms of GRE Verbal percentile (above 50th percentile) and Quantitiative Score above 90th percentile, instead of average or minimum GRE required for admission. This article will help you better understand GRE scores percentiles.

Percentile Calculator

For example, lest assume there are 15 numbers like 27, 24, 20.98, 19.65, 18.55, 17.34, 16,58, 13.2, 12.66, 10.32, 9.6, 7.6, 6.9, 5.0 and 4.5

To calculate 98th percentile and 75th percentile here’s what we need to do, first numbers have to to ordered in ascending order.

  • 98%*15=14.7, round it up (15), so 98th percentile is the largest number on the list.
  • 75%*15=11.25, round up to 12, 12th largest number is 19.65

Generally, Y is N-th percentile if at least N% of the numbers in the sample is less than or equal to Y.

Percentile score will vary from 99 to 0. Since, you will be also included in the sample, its not possible to get 100 percentile.

GRE Percentiles

Now having understood, how percentile is calculated, its easy to understand how GRE percentiles work. If your verbal percentile is 90, then 90% of test takes scored less then your score. If you’d like to score more in GRE, its equally important to understand how GRE Exam Score is calculated

As international student I lack second grade vocab most Americans have. This also means I constantly get the fist two questions wrong. Do you have something to improve that? we are talking about goggles: eyes relation! Thank you.
