‘I Scored 1490 in GRE, but I’m Confused’ – Anand

By HSB

nand is one of the frequent visitor of Happy Schools Blog. He had left a comment to the article Universities for GRE Score 1340. Here’s what he had to say about his GRE Score, University Selection and College Admission.

Hi my GRE score is 1490 (Quant 790+ Verbal 700) and my aggregate is 56% (upto 6th semester) with no live backlogs from Pune University. I want to pursue MS in CS or Financial Engineering. I am also planning to give Subject Test scheduled in November.

1. Will this subject test improve my chances of getting into some better University.

2. I m highly confused whether should I apply for fall 2009 or fall 2010 after completing my B.E as I think that i’m going to improve my academics this year as in Pune university only average of 7th and 8th sem marks are considered as Final marks.

3. Does US universities considers aggregate of 8 sems or only my Final yr result will be considered.

4. What are the chances of getting in Spring 2010. I have heard that only few colleges accepts Spring admissions.

5. Kindly suggest some universities if i apply for fall 2009.

Sir kindly clear my doubts. Your valuable suggestion will be highly appreciated.

Anand has very good insight about admission process and looks like he has spent some time and done some ground work. Here’s what I would do in your situation.

1) Will this GRE subject test improve my chances to get into better University?

GRE Score 1490 is really good score. I don’t get to many talk blog readers who have score above 1350. You can certainly apply to top schools and prestigious schools. But, I have said many times, GRE Score alone will not get you admission. There are many other factors that are considered to get into Grad School.

Subject Test will increases your chance, but most of the universities give admission based on General GRE Score. If you look at College Admission requirements, 95% of the Universities will say – GRE Subject Test not required to be considered for admission. But, I don’t see any dis advantage in taking the subject GRE test.

Since you haven’t mentioned about which Subject GRE ( Computer Science ) or for Financial Engineering, its better to apply early than waiting.

2) When to Apply Fall 2009, Spring 2010 or Fall 2010?

I would definitely apply for Fall 2009, since you already have GRE Score and Subject Test will be done by November. I would actually suggest to apply even before mid November and forward the subject test score after its available.

Universities usually close during December. So, try to get the graduate school application before Mid November. Some schools have Early Financial Aid deadline and regular admission deadline. In the application you can specify Subject Test date.

For Engineering and Biotech , the most important score is Quantitative. Departmental admissions will only see if you have got respectable numbers in other scores.
Requirement for subject score varies from University to university. Check with particular university.

Hi Anand, Congratulations on your GRE score! I’ve been through this whole process myself at one point and I’l try to answer your questions too:

    1) Do American universities consider the marks from all 4 years of college?
ANS. Yes. So if you think you can get your scores up, in the next few semesters then you should definitely make use of that opportunity. You could also gather some work experience and save some cash for grad school. That is not a bad idea. A lot of people do that.

    2) Universities?
ANS. Financial Engineering. One of my friends who got a 2310 in his GRE in 2003 went to Gatech for his MS in Financial Engineering. He did have a distinction on average. We were both studying at COEP. My friend now works for HSBC in London. So that is a good option.

For Computer Science, just having a good GRE score need not be enough for a lot of universities. What research areas are you interested in?

@Narayana: ITs not just you, entire world is in same situation. did you notice about layoffs in Bangalore and Chennai? Its a cycle, with your score, you can get into very good school.

  11. Narayana says:

    Hi,

I’m confused too, but for different reasons… :)

I got 1530 in GRE (750V + 780Q), and I’ve got 2 years work experience in a very good company and good undergraduate GPA. I want to do my Masters in Computer Science, but I’m a bit trepid because of the recent economic crisis… Wonder how it’ll affect education for foreign students…

    Thanks,
    –N

Hi! I gave my GRE in March 2008 and got a score of 1370 (570V + 800Q + 5 AWA). I will be applying next year for Fall 2010. Did I make a mistake in giving my GRE so early? I am interested in Genetics and Molecular Biology. My YGPA is around 9/10 while I am also a JNCASR Summer Fellow for 2008 and will be continuing with more projects both within and outside my college. Which universities should ideally be safe for me? Please help me shortlist my universities. Thanks!
