Gave GRE Today. Got 950 (Q- 680 & V-270). Am working in CSC, as Software Engg, Chennai. Finished my Btech in ECE at aggregate of 67%(2010 Passout). I am planning to go US by Fall 2012. At that time, I have 2yrs exp in IT Field. Is there any chances of getting placed in 3 universities such as Un. of Texas Dallas, Un. of Texas Arlington, SMU and IIT Chicago in Electronics major?
Help and suggest me, so that I can plan ahead in future.
Thanks in advance!
Your GRE Score is low to get admission in your target universities. You would GRE Score around 1150 to 1200 to be considered for admission in UTA, UTD, SMU and IIT. Since you have 2 more years, prepare for GRE for atleast 6 months and give another try.
If you are not getting over 1200 in practice, don’t appear in the exam. Don’t expect miracles during the test when you practice GRE score is below 1200.
Refer to some of the Average GRE Scores posted for universities required for admission.

There is quite a bit of misinformation on this site. Even with a low score (or lower than the “minimum”), many schools utilize rec letters & GPA to make the ultimate decision. Moreover, one may also be accepted on a conditional basis. I ran out of time on the verbal, which ironically is my strength, and got a 950, but w/ a 3.9 GPA & awesome rec letters I had no problem (pre-approved). The last thing I would do is retake it! I suck at idiot choice, have ADHD & test anxiety & I’m honestly on cloud 9 because it is OVER.. Oh and they also take the writing into consideration, and I know I rocked that. If I wasn’t so exhausted, I would dance!!! Don’t let people scare you there is always another way to make things happen!!!!
We are talking here about International students who write their own recommendation letter.

Well said HSB.
If GRE is too low, Unis will even not consider for admit, forget about financial aid or scholarship .
Hi I am looking for a GMAT and GRE tutor in mumbai. Can you please help
I am not really in favor of the advice that HSB gives, the IT professional job is quiet grueling. I would recommend you to write GRE exam again after a month or so (before advent of new pattern). Moving around 1050 score can fetch you decent universities.
I reckon you can get a better score, even if you get just 300 in verbal, aim for a 800 in quant section, things will be much better. Indians usually have an edge in Mathematics, prove you caliber.
Remember, only GRE score is not the only challenge, your TOEFL, LOR, SOP, Extra-curricular is also equally important. There is no point in spending thousands of dollars on a C or D grade school. Aim for a B grade at least. Hope, it helps. All the best !
My advise is based on the questions person asked. Person is applying for Fall 2012. What kind of person would AIM to get low test score? I mean when you prepare for exams, what is the attitude of preparing to just pass?
Rohan has given a more accommodating and reassuring answer than you did. remember people are always happier when we Identify with their capabilities than scolding them and making the task look more daunting. It is good for the best marks but it better to encourage the person to attempt the test the second time.
FYI – I don't settle for mediocrity. If you are appearing for the test, give your full effort. For the universities he has listed with GRE score 1050, application is not goign pas Graduate School.
Hi Rohan,
Thanks for your reply. Heard that those who appeared for the test in February get lower compared to March/April. Is it true Rohan? Could you tell me the best time to give second attempt in GRE? Is there any website for having previous model papers stuffs for preparing Verbal and Quantitative?
By the sametime can you confirm me whether all the powerprep ets software cd are same those who are registered in feb or march or june or which ever is applicable??
i think jan will be most suitable for 2nd time GRE….
