opting for ms in EE
suggest me some good universities such that i can get into them for FALL 2012
Vijay do you think you can get admission with this score in EE. Because I have got almost the same score. But People have straight forwardly discouraged me that I Cant get admission with such scores. What do you say? BTW I am applying for Renewable energy.
I got a GRE quant score of 156 and verbal score of 152. AWA-3.5. TOEFL 109/120. My CPI is 8.42/10. Please suggest some good universities where I can take an MS in petroleum engineering course as I am a B.tech in petroleum engineering.
Hey HSB,
I have scored 310 in Revised General GRE; 155 in Quant. and 155 in verbal. My AWA score is 4.0. My TOEFL (iBT) score is 115.
I have already applied to several universities for PhD program in Clinical Psychology. I have applied to only those universities where I have had one to one correspondence at least twice with the Professors who are willing to consider me as their student. I have some research and clinical experience, and several paper presentations at national conferences. I had been very involved in extra curricular activities throughout my undergraduate college days and I have been among the top 2% students throughout Bachelors and Masters degree (both from Delhi University).
What chances do I have at admission? I have taken GRE Psychology in Nov. and results are awaited. My GRE scores are not as good as my friends who got through last year but I have a better resume. Please help!
Hi Anushree,
First of all, since you’ve already corresponded with professors there, half the battle is won. (My dad had told me numerous times to do so, but..!) To add to that, Delhi University is, in my opinion, *the* top university in India, and it really carries a reputation. Mine is far from an expert opinion, but I really feel that you have an excellent chance at admission. Where all have you applied? I too gave the GRE Mathematics Subject paper in November, and I’m still looking out for the results. All the best, I’m sure something good will work out for you!
hi gayatri,
how was GRE-maths? For which courses do u need it ?
(Actually I saw very few people aiming 4 pure science courses)
I myself am aiming 4 MS-’applied mathematics’ or MS-in mathematics’ …
.The univs r asking 4 gre-math,but the next available date in India is in april,2012……Till then de univ deadlines would be over….
So I am just applying without it… please reply…
I think it was more or less decent. Almost all universities require GRE Mathematics for Ph.D. in Mathematics (I think perhaps in Applied as well..)
Oh, do you need GRE Subject for MS too? Hmm.. I suggest the best thing you could do is to contact the department and tell them that this is the situation, because I have a feeling that sometimes universities do say that GRE Subject is preferred, but not necessary. Anyhow, asking them would be the best option.
Because, the thing is – if you do apply without the GRE Subject, and you submit your application, there *might* be universities that would not even consider an incomplete application. So that much of your time, money and effort would have been wasted. So just ask them. In the worst case scenario, give it in April, and apply for 2013, and in the meanwhile, join someplace for M.Sc. in India so you can have one more extra year to learn.
All the best, hope everything pans out ok.
Thanks for the best wishes. I have seen a lot my friends with a better profile apply and not get through… so i’m really unsure of my chances. Any idea anyone what US Professors are interested to know about us if we are summoned for interview?
All the best to you Gayatri for your application process. And your are right. At several universities Subject GRE is recommended, at some mandatory and at other not required. Often this is mentioned in the Graduate school application page or departmental page. And one can always mail to confirm. They are very prompt in giving replies. So Aditya, do confirm before applying. All the best to you also.
Dear HSB
I don’t know what’s happening to you lately. All of your blog entries seems to have gracefully degraded in its quality. I hate to break the ice, but this post is highly misleading especially relating mere GRE scores to such a broad spectrum word ‘Profile’.
PS: If this is one of your tricks to lure more aspiring students into reading your blog then I guess it must work.
I would be glad to post if you have the data – complete data about students admission profile.
I know you are doing a great job but please mention that every application will be reviewed holistically and this GRE score will play only a part of it!!!! See there are many other sites which care only about the number of hits and not the students, but HSB does not fall into that category and I believe the info that HSB gives is more than perfect when compared with other sites..
Technically, I think HSB has mentioned numerous times that the GRE scores are not the be all, end all of the admissions process. Also, I don’t think universities would make things like the complete profile of admitted students public.
If people are really interested in some course in some university, then one should go to that particular department of the university, look at the current students, and then look up their website (they almost always have a link to their webpage). Mostly, these students also have links on their webpage to their CV and Research, so by going through that, we’d have a pretty fair idea as to the profile of students getting admitted in that stream for that college.

Hi youknowme,
I read your post, and I must say that your profile is really impressive! First of all, I had no idea that ETH, Zurich accepted GRE scores, but it seems to me that you have a really good chance if you manage to get good LORs and write a dynamic SOP. What about UCB, UIUC, University of Chicago? They’re really good, and would definitely appreciate your well-rounded application.
Thanks a ton gayathri!!!
All the best
