I Took GRE Exam Twice, Which Scores Will University Consider?

in GRE

Planning to take GRE Exam twice, since you your was not you expected to get? Then common question you will have is the same question one of the reader had posted as a comment.

Question

hi in my 1st attempt in GRE i got 1370 (q-720 v-650) in my 2nd attempt got 1110(q-670 v-440) which score would universities consider? best of two or average of two or the latest? what universities can i apply? i wish to pursue MS in comp science.

I have posted few article about scores and GRE Exam scores can certainly go down when you take GRE exam again. Also, I have seen many students who scored less in GRE in second attempt. [ Read more Frequently Asked Questions and answers about GRE Exam Scores ]

Universities can consider both the scores, some schools take the higher of multiple scores, some will take average of multiple GRE Exam scores. But, schools don’t publish how they consider multiple GRE Scores received from ETS.

I haven’t come across any details from Graduate School admission requirements about multiple GRE scores. But, lets consider the reality. You have taken GRE twice and there is nothing much we can do. Both the scores will be reported. Since you have 1370 – better score than second GRE score of 1110. Also, we don’t know how university will consider each scores. In that case, I would think positive and assume schools will consider the best of both scores and select schools accordingly.

Hi,

I want to know when one takes the GRE multiple times does the score sheet that is sent for personal record , have all the other scores listed or does it just show the scores of the latest exam ??

I am aware that ETS sends all the scores to the University, but I want to know about the personal mark sheet .

Hi , I took GRE last year in NOV, 2007. I got 960 (700 in Quant and 260 in verb),3.0 in analytical. I attempeted two to three times GRE pre test befoe taking the final one. I am assured to get 760 in quant, but i am not able to get 300+ in verbal. What can i do? In iELTS i got 7band. Plz give any suggestion to improve my verbal section.

Hi Anindita,
Every univerisity has its own policy about multiple GRE scores, but many schools just look at your most recent if you took the tests a few months apart. The fact that you are taking it multiple times to get a better score shows that you are dedicated, which is always a good thing. If you want some extra math help, you can visit my blog gmatgremath.blogspot.com.

The scores are reported as soon as you finish the exam, only the essay scores take a few weeks to arrive. Some schools let you use the unofficial scores until the official ones come in. Good luck with your application.

Hi,

I have taken my GRE twice but havent fared satusfactory in both the attempts..in my first attempt the score was around 700 and in my second attempt it was 960. I am planning to take it for the third and final time in the first week of february. I want to apply for MA in communication. Will my multiple GRE scores affect my admission in US universities? If I take my GRE in february, will it be late for fall admission with scholarship or spring admission is preferable in this regard?
