I-20 from 1 or more Universities?

By HSB

Do you have I-20 from more than one University and still confused on which University to attend? You are not alone, every student planning for Fall 2008 are in the same situation.

University Selection is tough process. Majority of students spend time selecting universities when they apply for Graduate schools admission and after getting admission from graduate school, again its tough and difficult process to select which university to apply. If student have done good homework while applying for graduate school, then it wouldn’t be really tough to decide which University to attend after getting admission. If you are confused about which University to apply for Student Visa after getting admission from 2 ore more Universities, then here are some thoughts that will help you decide on the Universities.

I have put an list of questions that will help students to select the Universities, but its time consuming and it involves effort to find answers to the questions before you can actually decide which university to apply. I can say again, there is no magic button that will give you answer, once your submit the profile on which University to attend. It involves finding information, work, time and effort. I have seen many students not happy about the University they selected to attend, reason being not much time was spend while deciding on the which Graduate School to attend.

I was talking to one for the frequent blog visitor who got admission from Graduate School in 5 different Universities and he had short listed 2 Universities from the list of 5 different Graduate School. I asked how he selected those 2 schools, and his response was not I expected “Randomly I selected both the schools” and I asked why did he ruled out the other 3 schools and the answer was “I thought those schools were of no value and not worth spending for”.

Both the answers threw me off the couch. He had applied to 6 universities, got admission from 5 and randomly selected 2 to decide on which to attend and considering 3 schools were not worth considering to attend. So, my question was “Why did you spend about $500 in application fees in applying to those 3 schools that is not worth studying”?

Questions to decide on the University to apply for F1 Visa

  1. What is the Tuition Fees per semester?
  2. Can you afford the Tuition Fees without any form of Aid and Part Time Jobs?
  3. How many students get any form of Aid ( Scholarship, Research Assistantship, Teaching Assistantship, ..)?
  4. How long does it take to get Aid/Scholarship ( First semester or more than one semester)?
  5. If no aid is available how do students manage their cost of living?
  6. Do students get Part time jobs?
  7. what is the cost of living per month?
  8. How much can you earn per month from Part Time Jobs?
  9. Does student get job directly with companies or majority of students find job through consultants?
  10. Does University allow students to apply for Internship all round the year or only in summer semester?
  11. What is the degree requirements for completing the Masters Degree?
  12. Are you interested in doing thesis or course work based Masters degree?
  13. If you are interested in doing PhD, does the University offer the major of your choice?
  14. How many current student did you talk to find out information about the school?

If you were to decide on any specific University without even finding answers to any of the above questions, then you are making big mistake. How big of that mistake is that? Its very big mistake.

Well, when I started M.S. it not Non-SEVIS I-20 and when SEVIS was introduced, I got new SEVIS I-20. If you apply for say 5 Universities, and get admission from 5 Universities, you will get I-20 ’s from all 5 schools. But some school like NC State will send I-20 only if you send Financial Documents after you get amission letter. But, majority of the school will send you I-20 along with admission letter. Just to add few more example, my brother is currently studying MS in Houston and had 4 SEVIS I-20’s from 4 different schools and I did check with 3 other students who got 2 or more I-20’s for Fall 2008 and they are in the process of get F1 Student Visa to one of school of their choice.

Obviously you have never heard about SEVIS.

If you get admission for 3 schools, then all the 3 schools will send you I-20. You can decide to attend which school you want to.

How do i know that which university gives more fundings in the form of assistantships in the field of electrical engineering with specialization in control systems?? as most schools have got control systems in their curriculum and most schools have good research going on in that field. so i am really confused as how to select schools giving adequete funds.

You cannot have more than one I-20. Please change that. You can have more than one university that granted you enrollment, but since you choose only one of them, only one of them grants you an I-20.
