International Students - Do I need to file Taxes ?
March 31, 2008 by Raghu
International students in in Student F1 Visa who entered United states before On or before Dec 31 2007 should file Income taxes, even if didn’t have any Income. Some students might think, I didn’t earn any money or I was in U.S. only for 2 days on the Tax year 2007, but in long run its better to file your Income Tax. That might be an issue when you apply for your Green Card in future. So, even if you were in U.S. for 1 days in 2007, and didn’t have any income, make sure you file the taxes before April 14 2008.
If you don’t have Social Security Number, you will need to apply to ITIN Number to file your taxes. More information about Filing Income Tax for International students is available at UT @ Austin International Students Tax Information Center.
You will need to submit form W7 along with Tax documents ( 8843 or 1040NR -EZ, or both, … ) to apply for ITIN Number to Address in Austin, Texas to file your taxes and application for ITIN Number, if you don’t have SSN. Read the instructions in W7 ( Available from IRS.GOV) form to know what other documents to send.
