According to survey done by SVR 39.4% of international students in Germany surveyed by the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR) said they had encountered discrimination.
That’s about 4 in 10 international students facing discrimination.
Of the five countries surveyed,
- France : 39.9% (Higher Education in France Explained)
- UK- 27.4% (Higher Education in UK Explained)
- Netherlands 30.1%
- Sweden 34.9%
Education in Germany is Free or Cheap, but you might run into situations where you could be face some form of discrimination.
However, while 4 out of 5 international students wanted to stay, live and work in Germany after graduation. Rest of the students return home.
Why students return home after studying in Germany?
Many students find it difficult to understand the complex immigration rules ( changes are coming soon) and 39.4% reported discrimination.
If similar survey is conducted in USA, discrimination numbers will be less than 39%.
Recently we discussed about Where to study with admission from USA, UK and Germany.
In-spite of the survey result, quality of education is good in Germany.
As per the survey, if you plan to live longer period of time after completing Higher Education Abroad, as of now, USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand looks to be more attractive option.
From Immigration point of view, Australia and New Zealand will be the best option.

1. I have applied to 5 German Universities for Winter 2012 , mainly because education was cheap there and last year some of my college mates with similar or lesser profile had got admits from German Reputed Institutes. I have a work ex of 3 years in ALSTOM after completing B.E Electrical from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. But till date only one of the 5 has given me an admit while the other 4 have neither said yes nor no… I am a bit concerned about whether I will be able to complete the formalities within time.. can anyone tell me the expected date to receive the communications from German Institutes?
2. What are the processes of getting a stay visa after completing Masters from Germany? Since I will be taking some loan, I wish to work and make up for it by staying a few years abroad.
3. If I study in Germany what are the possibilities for me to get a Job in other EEU countries. Since Education in UK, Canada or New Zealand, etc is a bit on the higher side. I haven’t applied there, in spite of they are English speaking countries. Can I apply for Job there after completing the Masters from Germany. If so what are the processes to do so, since I will be applying as an immigrant employee…

Great to see so many students going to Germany. Germany has a robust economy even in this recession. Its a new avenue especially for those students not interested in australia, UK, USA. I hope HSB includes more articles on study process, visas, scholarships, language requirement etc. Is GRE, TOEFL, IELTS score valid there or some other exams are there for Germany? Do we need a certificate course in German Language? Are there any agencies like IDP for australia which guides students for admission in Germany? How much is tuition / fees in universities there?
I’m already working on it. Going to meet representatives from universities within Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria in 3 weeks.

From what I understand this survey was used by German govt to change the immigration law. I don’t live in Germany to know the influence of the organization who did the survey.

I am pursuing my Masters in Automation Engineering in University of Bremen which is in the north of Germany. I would really like to know from the blogger where did he find such ridiculous surveys and what is the point of posting it on HSB. I follow HSB eagerly and posting such unauthentic figures would really affect the mindset of students back in India who are planning to come abroad.
Well commenting on this post, “German education is free or cheap”: this very sentence proves that German universities do not discriminate between their own students and international students. Because in any other country be it USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, UK etc. the fee for international students is three times the fee for home students. This means that a student who was born in Germany, whose parents are citizens and have contributed to the growth and development of the country and a student who does not even know to speak the language and is a complete stranger to their country will pay the same fee and get the same quality of education in Deutschland. Dont you think this is reason enough to think they are not discriminating.
I landed here last month without knowing a single word of German and had 53 kg of luggage. Do you think it would be possible for me to survive if people here were not kind to me. In fact many people went out of their way to help. They carried my bags and tried to speak in English in their own country Deutschland just to help a foreigner like me. You will not find such things in India. Leave alone helping foreigners, people from one state discriminate against people from other states just because they do not know their regional language. I lived away from my hometown in another state and believe me I have faced more discrimination than ever. If you are in Germany and you are facing discrimination because you are not as humble, as polite and as well mannered as them then you might as well get discriminated.

@KK did you read the actual survey published by Organization based in Germany. I just reporting what in the survey. For folks like you who think its biased and probably didn’t care to look at the survey, I have pasted the screenshot of the report. If you think its biases, then you should be arguing against the Germany organization and students who took part in the survey.
Now – Can you explain how HSB is digging the grave by reporting what was reported by an International Organization based in Germany?

Totally out of context question. I have applied to Universitat Bremen day before yesterday for masters in “Information and Automation Engineering” for the summer term. I would like to know when the officials usually notify us about the admission? As in after the deadline how long will it take?
I did my B.E in Mechatronics from Manipal University. I managed only to get 6.32 CGPA . My project was manufacturing a robotic arm . My toefl score is 99. GRE verbal is 145, analytical is 156, writing 3.5.
I know i am ambitious but again thats why i want to study more about automation and robotics. i wanted to know whether the University considers applicants with such scores?

Descrimination is not good, but wherever you go in this world once it is not your home country you will face such problems, the difference is the level of descrimination and is the gouvernment real fight against it or not. Student who go to study abroad they have to know why they are there gain knowledge and go back to their home country to develop their countries for the next generations not to face the same problems. Even in china thou the rules are serious but descrimination is there for foreigner students.
Germany is safe place… compared to other schengen places… have experienced both good n bad at germany… but on the whole people are helpful… bad experience: i reached my hotel on very first day not aware of customs/ culture… they serve toast for the customers on first visit… d lady asked me whther i wud like to have something… i was cold so i asked for coffee. I got doubt whether they will get coffee at room or i shud have coffee first and then proceed towards my room.. when i asked my doubt…one among two ladies got annoyed. since then she dint serve or reply to me properly… I am still puzzled was my question that bad. Good experience…I had to catch a train towards frankfurt…where i had to get down at one place and catch another train towards frankfurt… there were only 5 mins for me to catch another train.. unaware language… was not able to make out which platform i was heading… this guy standing on platform helped me get on right place at right coach. was so thankful to him i was running out of time.. had flight to catch.
i think language is a big factor in making decisions regarding studying and settling. My cousins live in germany and there they teach english very late in school and their parents are more keen to send them to england to study further as they know english is more important in international market.

My brother stays in Germany. He is absolutely fine. He stays in south germany. Considerable discrimination can be seen in North side of germany. However, discrimination might be less when we compare the same in Australia/USA/etc. We have all seen the level of racism in Australia in the media. So, germany is safe.

I have been doing my internship here since 3 and half months and haven’t experienced any such acts. I have many such events to share where these people helped me like anything.
Its like you have some mischievous people everywhere and you can’t expect 100% of the population to be of same mentality.
Just sharing one of the occasion:
On very 1st day I took the wrong ticket from the Frankfurt airport. I was supposed to go to Friedrichtal( Baden) and I didn’t knew that there are more than 10 places by the name of Friedrichtal just thebracket name differs. So, I went 150 kms farther from my destination and I later came ot know that the place was somewhere in the black forest. The place where DDLJ was shot. It was -10 degree and no person around , no phone around to call anyone. Plus I was dragging 4 bags along with me because I was directly coming from airport and believe me sliding it on ice was like getting very tough. So, after walking for 2 hour, I knocked few houses for help, but since it was very secluded I was hesitating in doing something like that. Had no water ,no food since last 14 hours. But it was fun. But finally to my surprise, a car stopped. the German husband and wife asked me that what was wrong and after hearing to everything they took me to a tourist center 3 kms far from there, arranged for the tickets so that I may go back to the place where I intended to. They escorted me till the station and as I was having so much luggage, kept my luggage in the train too. They could have easily passed by in this chilling weather. They spent time , energy just for my sake. They said it was their duty to welcome and protect the people who come from other country.
There have been many occasions like this about which I hear from my friends who are pursuing their masters here. Even if they don’t know they help you like anything. If you are at wrong place at the wrong time, in any country you will face such people.
Plus its education is extremely good and hard. Few people might face some problems with the language but now a days generally most of the working people know English, though not very well.

I do not agree with this. By the way, the new rules are meant to ease the immigration rules. For example – Previously one could get a work permit for 12 months after completing their masters in Germany. The new law will increase this period to 18 months. The new laws are also meant to relax the immigration rules to attract highly skilled foreign workers. More details here (In German, please use tools like google translate) –

Personally speaking, I have many friends studying in Germany and all of them have opinion that it’s one of the best place to do your masters – no discrimination whatsoever. Moreover there are excellent job opportunities after completion of a master degree in Germany.

Rest of the students from 4 out of 5 is 1… so the ratio seems to be higher than those who want to return.. Its not making any sense to me, was that a typo error?
