Is Passport Required to Register for GRE in India?

Raghuram Sukumar —  December 26, 2009 — 20 Comments

hello friends,
my name is abxxx and i’m doing engineering in Civil from MNIT,Jaipur. i have entered 6th semester(going to start from 4th january,2010). i have many questions regarding GRE. A few of them are as follows:

  • Q1. i have entered 6th sem.. When should i write my GRE exam? ,ideal time?
  • Q2. My branch is Civil engg.. so,am I supposed to write GRE subject test also in addition to GRE General test?
  • Q3. Is passport compulsory before registration?
  • Q4. Is it worth to study MS in US instead of taking job? I mean ,you will be spending a lot on your education in US. How are MS graduates recognised in comparison with their counterparts Undergraduates?

There are many other questions but for the time being please reply back with your suggestions.
thank you

When Should I write GRE

Browse around in US Graduate School Admission FAQ’s Section and also, if you subscribe for Free Newsletter you will get an Ebook – Students Guide to US Universities. In short – try to complete before end of 7th semester.

GRE Subject Test

GRE Subject Test is not required, unless university has GRE subject test as mandatory requirements. If you look at universities, most of them will not have mandatory requirement for GRE Subject test.

Passport for GRE

Yes, without passport you can register for GRE, but if you get the names wrong during registration and and passport, you will be in trouble. So, always register for GRE only after you get the passport. Many students are facing problems due blank surname in passport.

Job vs Masters in US

If it’s not worth, why do you think so  many students from India (around 80,000) students go to US to attend college?  Students with Masters degree usually get more salary, it helps while applying for Green Card and STEM graduates get additional 20,000 H1B Visa quota. If you think, studying in US is not worth, but plan to come to US , then read the article How to Apply for H1B Visa from India.

  5. The people there should understand that, this is the cause (for improving our skills), we are going to U.S.A etc for studying.

They want us to invest money(for their expenditure) and also return back to India after completing because they have no jobs.

At-least, they take up this responsibility, to improve skills.

(If there was world class infrastructure and get a good salary in India, so that one can spend for their luxury and have a good living. No one would care for the U.S.A etc. On the other side, they are a country which is unable to come out of recession for nearly a decade ! )

  6. Hi..I had applied for a passport while I was small..Its validity is till 2017.
I have heard that you need to apply for a new passport once you become a major ..Is it true??

  11. hello dude,
below are the answers for ur ques:

    1) when you should give GRE totally depends upon what future planning you have done.If you opt for a job for say a couple of years then it wil b a diff scenario.but in either case i suggest you to give gre in d 7th semester.ul need atleast 2 months preparation time.ideal time is jan,feb n march…extended upto max septmeber..avoid giving GRE in d months of oct,nov n dec..

2)i dont think gre subject test is necessary.there are very few universities that demand subject test.so its safe to ignore it.

3)NO.passport is not necessary b4 registration but b sure that u have d passport b4 going for d exam/u need to show d passport wen u enter d examination centre.

4)yes.going for MS is any time better than job. ul not get such an opportunity to go n settle in US if u dont opt for masters.

    • hei could you guys plz tell me Does Processing for Admission takes 1 year?

like if i give GRE in 2011, then i can apply for admission in 2012??

And one more thing, are the scores you get in GRE Bible and other software really depict your orignal score?

I am getting score between 1100-1200 and in intend to give GRE in DEc ,2010 and i had done around 2000/3500 words in Barron?what do you guys reckon

  12. For writing GRE exam you can use ur Driving licence or any other identity issued by the respective country.U can use ur passport or Driving licence etc and IDproof is necessary 2 take GRE exam.
Subject test is not necessary. It will be recomanded by some US universities to take subject GRE if required.

  13. A1) If you decide to do MS right after you graduate from Bachelor's degree then you might consider giving GRE just before your 6th semester ends. (I would leave at least 9 months for the paperwork).

A2) Subject Test is not mandatory. They let you know if you have to take it. So, until specified, do not worry about it. Most of the times it is not required.

A3) Passport is mandatory. It is your primary identification not only in India but where ever you go.

A4) Let me be cut to the chase on this one. Most of them have a dream of doing a higher degree. But why US or UK or any country other than home country? Isn't worth studying in the home country? The main reason would be of paperwork. You'll understand when you migrate out of home country.

    Good Luck,

    -Sri

    • thanx a lot for ur feedback…

i'm thinking to write my GRE exam in May(i will register in January). here are few more questions for u:

Q1. Which is a better option and why:

doing MS immediately after completing B.Tech.

      OR

doing job for 2-3years and then doing MS?

Q2. My financial background is not strong. I'll b trying for scholarship ofcourse but in case if i don't get any scholarship, what should i do? here in Jaipur, i give home tuitions to fulfill my financial needs. so,thinking to pay by myself is out of the situation. And i don't want to take any loan also(a huge loan with interest to be paid later by me only).

Q3. my CGPA is 7.2 (out of 10). i couldn't concentrate much on my studies bcoz of the tuitions i used to give. i'll be leaving tuitions for the next and final 3semesters to improve my CGPA. I want to get into University of California,Berkeley in Structural department(civil). I'll try my best to get a good GRE score. What else can i do to ensure a 100% seat ,i mean 100% admission surety in UC(apart from good Resume ,SOP etc).

I'm looking forward for ur feedback

      thankyou

      • Q1. Which is a better option and why: doing MS immediately after completing B.Tech. OR doing job for 2-3years and then doing MS?
        >> Will you have interest to study MS after 2 years? Prefer education over work, but you have to decide base don your financial situation.

Q2. My financial background is not strong. I’ll b trying for scholarship ofcourse but in case if i don’t get any scholarship, what should i do? here in Jaipur, i give home tuitions to fulfill my financial needs. so,thinking to pay by myself is out of the situation. And i don’t want to take any loan also(a huge loan with interest to be paid later by me only).
        >> Pretty much all the students applying to US is in your situation. If you dont want to take loan and cannot afford to pay out of state fees, it will be hard to get visa and pay for expenses.
Q3. my CGPA is 7.2 (out of 10). i couldn’t concentrate much on my studies bcoz of the tuitions i used to give. i’ll be leaving tuitions for the next and final 3semesters to improve my CGPA. What else can i do to ensure a 100% seat ,i mean 100% admission surety in UC(apart from good Resume ,SOP etc).
        >> Present papers. Why are you attending tuition while in college?

        • I'll try to present some papers as you said. i give home tuitions to 11th-12th class students to carry out my daily expenses. i'll be leaving the tuitions now and concentrate more on my studies. i have earned enough to carry out my expenses of next 3 semesters left.

thanx by the way for your nice feedbacks…

this is a very good website covering most of the doubts and questions of the students.

There is one more question troubling me. I'll ask some other day.

thanks a lot again for ur reply
