19 Do’s and Don’ts After Job Interview
August 1, 2008 by HSB
Job Interview is tough, but there are ways to make a positive impression even after the job interview. I have had chance to screen resumes and interview candidates. I have had pleasant experience and have also had not so good experience during job interview process and after the interview process. I like to highlight the lessons I have learned when I was applying for jobs as student few years back and during job search and job change. Following tips very well apply to internship interview.
After Job Interview Do’s
- Do get the name and title of each person interviewed you during job interview
- Do Send Thank You letter addressed to each person
- Do send Thank you letter to HR and ask them to forward it to person who interviewed you
- Do customize after interview thank you note based on interview questions/topics discussed
- Do show enthusiasm in thank you letter
- Do ask when Hiring Decision is expected to me made ( during interview or interview follow-up email)
- Do wait till you hear from them, even past the day/time they said will get back to you
- Do think twice before sending email or calling HR or Manager before they call you or email you
- Do have lots of patience and self-belief about the way job interview went.
- Do think – “Way you think job interview went is always different form the way interviewer think you performed in the interview”
- Do strongly believe that answering few questions wrong or not knowing the answer will not hinder your job chances to get job.
- Spell check twice before sending thank you letter after interview.
- Do check if the thank you note is addressed to the right interviewer
After Job Interview – Don’t s
- Don’t be very desperate in thank you letter
- Don’t send Thank You letter in ALL CAPS
- Don’t call HR person or Hiring Manager daily asking for interview results
- Don’t call the Hiring Manager right after the interview ( I have seen candidates call immediately after the phone screen asking about their interview performance)
- Don’t break any bridges even if job was not offered
- Don’t call the number from which manager had called during job interview phone screen
I will update this article as I come across more experience or if I remember more details from previous interview experience. But, to get to the interview process, students have to clear phone screen, but to get to that stage, resume has to reach the right person who can decide if they have to interview you. Effective way to get your resume to the hands of hiring manager is to use networking tools like LinkedIn.com and If you are not sure how to use LinkedIn, I have written in detail about Students Guide to Network using LinkedIn.

Jennifer your points are really good.
I will 100% do this while my interview.
A good tip I’d give is make up your own business card and take it (visiting card). Present it to your interviewer (or panel) and ask for theirs in return. This allows you to remember their names better, their titles, contact information as well as they will remember you also as many people would not be carrying ‘personal’ business cards.
Also, try to approach the job interview from this angle- a job, a career is usually something we choose, we like it, enjoy it. So going to a job interview is simply sitting and answering questions about things we like to do!!
Yes. An interview thank you letter is a great idea. Here’s a sample interview thank you letter.
