I’m big fan of LinkedIn.com and I use it as much I use my Orkut and Facebook profile. But, main difference between LinkedIn.com and other social networking sites like Orkut, Facebook and Myspace is that Linkedin will help you find your dream job.
Using LinkedIn for Job Search
I had written a lengthy article on how to use linkedin for job search. Since then I saw few students who have signed up. But, still there are so many students who are not aware of LinkedIn.com.
Reason I’m suggesting everyone to join LinkedIn and use it for job search, is because with new OPT rule, student should find a job after Graduation within 90 days of Post Completion OPT. Yes, that’s right, you have only 90 days to find a job, else you will be out of status. You will have to register for new degree or pack your bags to home country.
I know for sure 100% and have seen, its very difficult to get a job within 90 days after graduation, if you start searching for jobs only after graduation. I strongly say, most of students starting their job search after graduation will end up joining some consulting firm.
If you want to find a full time/permanent position after graduation, you will need to start searching for job atleast 6 months before planned to graduation date. According to Department of Labor, only 2.8% of people find job in U.S. by searching using major job portal sites like Monster, Dice, . So, you can imagine and calculate your chances.
Job Search is not easy
If you haven’t started your job search, then you will have to talk to someone who graduated recently and running out of time in OPT. If they have created a good network of professionals, then job search is very easy. With few emails, they could have used the network that LinkedIn provide to get a job.
Finding Entry Level job
If you don’t have any internship experience, its even harder to find entry level jobs. Companies look for someone with atleast internship experience when hiring for entry level position. So, if you want your job search to be as smooth as possible, start building your network using linkedin.com. Here’s 2 minute video that explain what is LinkedIn and how to use its network power to get what you want.
