GRE Score 880; PhD Admit $20,000 Financial Aid; F1 Visa Chances?

in F1 Visa,PhD

This question was asked by Shreya through email about her chances of getting f1 Visa with Low GRE Score and admission with Financial Aid.

Shreya Asks

I have secured 880 in my GRE and 85 in Toefl exam. I have applied for PhD in US universities. I have received I-20 letter from University of xxxxx . They have also offered me Graduate Assistantship of $20,000. Still can my visa be denied because of low GRE score? Please reply asap.

F1 Student Visa

Student Visa stamping depends on many factors, not just the GRE Score. Since University in US have recognized your academic performance by giving Admission with $20,000 Graduate Assistantship , Visa officer will give consideration for that.

If University believed that your GRE Score 880 is less, then they shouldn’t given admission in first place. They looked at your credentials ( Letter of Recommendation, Statement of Purpose, Resume, Projects, GRE and TOEFL Score,….) before giving admission.

Visa officer will look at 3 things

  1. Are you competent enough to study in US
  2. Do you have enough financial background to pay for education expenses while in US
  3. Will you return to your home country after completing the education

Since you got admission in PhD with Graduate Assistanship, factor 1 and 2 is satisfied. So, you have to prove that you will come back after completing the education in US.You have bright chances ti get Visa stamping. Be positive and attend the interview with a bright smile on your face. Confidence is the key.

Dear all

I gave my GRE to study PhD in Biomedical engineering in US University. My Undergrad GPA is 3.26/4.00; Grad 3.50/4.00; Lecturer fort a semester in US University; solid Recommendation letter; solid SOP; 5 yrs experience; GRE 930 ( V-330; Q- 600; AWA – awaiting). I have everything good except GRE. I have applied to Univ of Kentucky, Lexington and Oakland University, Detroit. Can I get a feedback if my GRE is showstopper for me to secure admission with assistantship. My research interest matches with two of the professors in each university and I want to continue my research in the area of my work as Part time lecturer.

You should have asked this Q before applying. There is nothing much you can do now. Did you talk to profs?

I talked to a prof and he told me that the department committe’s review shall be final. He also said that he can push to some extend. Any way’s I can give GRE one more time and cannot promise scores more than 1200 ( verbal 330-380 depending on my luck)

Thanks

I would like to make a suggestion here. The fourth point that can be added under “Things that the Visa Officer will look at” is “Your research area should not be considered a ‘sensitive technology’.”

Hi Ppl,

I have a serious question here, Please do help me out. I have applied for the Fall-2009 and planning to go for the visa interview shortly…

My issue is that, I have already been to australia last year, but due to certain mishaps had to return back half de way and I have the arrival/departure stamps of that country on my passport( no visa stamping for australia) ..

Secondly, Since I dint have enough time to prepare for GRE, I was able to score oly 870 nd toefl is 92 nd IELTS 7.0
I have been good in my academics with no history of arrears and a % of 74.5 . And regarding my financial status, Though am not very sound but have the faith that I could manage of with the tuition fee.. I have got admits from few Uni’s out of which I ve shortlisted one from the tier-3 group..

What are my chances of getting a F-1 Visa.. Pl do help me out.. seeking your reply very badly..

I think you’ll get selected because I’m assuming that your academic background is very strong and the university that issued the I-20 looked at it! If you convince the Visa Consulate then I think you’ll be through!

Good Luck!

Hello,

I also have very low GRE scores, only a little more than 700.However,my GPAs are high and I also have a good academic history having topped my area in school and college. My low GRE scores are purely attributable to my nerves and are the one big drawback in my application. My GPA is 3.94 in undergrad and 4.00 in my MSc.I have applied to Rutgers and State University of New York. What chances do I stand?

Hope someone can help me by answering.

Thanks.
