Low GRE : No problem

09.04.07 | 30 Comments

This post will definitely help student who have applied for U.S. University admission. I saw few of them asking help in short listing universities and lots of queries on admission chances when GRE score is less than 1000. I want to reiterate the fact that GRE score is not the only major factor for admission decision. There are many factors that are taken into consideration by the Graduate Admission Committee. Some of the factors are

  • GRE Score
  • TOEFL Score
  • Academic Percentage
  • Recommendation Letters
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Academic Projects
  • Papers Presented
  • Extra-curricular Activities
  • Certification Courses

Also, you need to consider the fact that, its business for University and Education for students. They certainly have to give admission to certain number of students that will be profitable for the University.

Now, lets talk about how different factors come into play. Lets consider different scenarios

Low GRE and TOEFL ( <1000 )

If you have good academic percentage and good recommendation letter and statement of purpose, you should not have any problem in getting admission. But, the question is what type of school.
There are many schools, that give admission to students that have low GRE. Does that affect the quality of education? Nope, definitely not. Courses are offered by the professors who have PhD and have experience is doing research. Though you might get little exposure to latest research, since in such schools, research opportunities will be less and funding will be less.

Funding is usually given to professors who are good in their field. Any professor with new ideas that would have good impact when implemented will get funding. That fund is passed on to students who do Research Work as Research Assistants.

So, the school that offers admission for Low GRE might have less funding opportunities, but never nil funding chances. Apply to such schools. FDU, TAMK, CSUF are some schools to name.

Low Academic Percentage:

If you have GRE score around 1000 are more, but with some backlogs and less academic percentage, that’s not a problem too. Different universities in India have different academic system. Mumbai University usually gives less percentage, but people from South India, will have high percentage of academics. Universities are usually aware of that fact and you will be evaluated accordingly.

Backlogs are no big issue, unless you have some current backlogs while applying. If all the backlogs are cleared while applying for admission, you shouldn’t have any problem.

In next post ( sometime tomorrow ) I’m going to talk about very simple tactic that will increase you chances of getting admission by double fold. I would really appreciate, if you can leave some comments, if you like the posts and suggestion on what type of articles you would like to see in future posts.
