Low GRE : No problem
September 4, 2007 by admin
This post will definitely help student who have applied for U.S. University admission with GRE Score. I saw few of them asking help to select universities and lots of queries on admission chances when GRE score is less than 1000. I want to reiterate the fact that GRE score is not the only major factor for admission decision.There are many factors that are taken into consideration by the Graduate Admission Committee. Some of the factors are
- GRE Score
- TOEFL Score
- Academic Percentage
- Recommendation Letters
- Statement of Purpose
- Academic Projects
- Papers Presented
- Extra-curricular Activities
- Certification Courses
Also, you need to consider the fact that, its business for University and Education for students. They certainly have to give admission to certain number of students that will be profitable for the University.
Now, lets talk about how different factors come into play. Lets consider different scenarios
Low GRE and TOEFL ( <1000 )
If you have good academic percentage and good recommendation letter and statement of purpose, you should not have any problem in getting admission. But, the question is what type of school.
There are many schools, that give admission to students that have low GRE. Does that affect the quality of education? Nope, definitely not. Courses are offered by the professors who have PhD and have experience is doing research. Though you might get little exposure to latest research, since in such schools, research opportunities will be less and funding will be less.
Funding is usually given to professors who are good in their field. Any professor with new ideas that would have good impact when implemented will get funding. That fund is passed on to students who do Research Work as Research Assistants.
So, the school that offers admission for Low GRE might have less funding opportunities, but never nil funding chances. Apply to such schools. FDU, TAMK, CSUF are some schools to name.
Low Academic Percentage:
If you have GRE score around 1000 are more, but with some backlogs and less academic percentage, that’s not a problem too. Different universities in India have different academic system. Mumbai University usually gives less percentage, but people from South India, will have high percentage of academics. Universities are usually aware of that fact and you will be evaluated accordingly.
Backlogs are no big issue, unless you have some current backlogs while applying. If all the backlogs are cleared while applying for admission, you shouldn’t have any problem.
In next post ( sometime tomorrow ) I’m going to talk about very simple tactic that will increase you chances of getting admission by double fold. I would really appreciate, if you can leave some comments, if you like the posts and suggestion on what type of articles you would like to see in future posts.

toefl yet to take…
undergrad aggrigate 55%(7 backlogs)
plz suggest me some universities for computer engineering
@Srivatsa: My suggestion would be to retake GRE. With 850, you might get admission, but getting Visa is very difficult. Try to get score above 1100.
hey … this article of yours is very helpful. thanks.

PLZ REPLY SOON.
@Ravali
Dun worry, there are universities where u can get with GRE = 970…wat is your preffered area of majoring??…u have to mention that first….and well…if u can take up GRE once more then it would be better..just try and get above 1100…i am telling this not bcos u wont get no chance in unis..but bcos visa officers can cause a problem bcos of that score….anyways..its upto you….u know i think a person getting 970 in GRE can easily cross 1100 in their next attempt…but as i said the decision is entirely yours to make…in the next post do mention ur preffered area of studies..
ALL THE BEST..
my preferred area is computer science.my 10th % is 83.4,and my 12% is 95.8,will these percentages also play any role in getting admission into the university.i have come to know that lousinana tech university,texas a&m university are sm universities where i can get admission,can u plz suggest the wat kind of univ are these i mean are they good.and plz it would be very helpful if u could suggest sm universities for my score my score 970 as i have already told.
reply to me as soon as possible.

@Ravya
Ya , your school percentages are good. ? Also mntion the :
1>How much percentage did u get in Undergrad studies??
2>mention the topper’s percentage.
3>Mention the type of research that you want to do in US.
Texas A&M will me very very ambitious for you. You will have to publish lots of papers in good journals and publications like that of IEEE and resonance magazine.U will have to show very strong research potential which u can show by giving proof that you have taken seminars at various symposiums. however Bridgewater college , FDU are the two unis u CAN get in.

Sorry i submitted the previous post twice. My apologies.
@Lasya
Wat subject did u study in ur undergrad?? wat area do u prefer to study in US?? Wat is ur working area? If its related to ur field of study then its good.
my undergrad percentage is 70.4%.toppers percentage is 77%.
can u suggest me the courses which can be taken by computer science students,which will giv a good scope in future.what type of courses are available for grad studies in computer science.
and first i wanna really thank you for the valuable suggestions you are giving.
plz reply to this sir.
@ Ravali
Hmm..good percentage…umm…i am not a computer science fella but all my computer science friends told me that networking and security are very good areas for MS in CS….One friend of mine from IIT delhi told me that graphic designing is having a grand future bcos of the animation film industry and also bcos of several simulation softwares that are being produced every year. Personally i am computer gaming freak
so i think game programming is pretty good too…last week in ten sports a statistics was shown that stated taht among the top 100 companies in the FORTUNE list.:-EA Sports, Bink , Ubisoft etc are the companies present that are involved in computer games production. Basically CS is a very vast field and u have got large options for research…u have to make an intelligent choice depending on your abilities.
my under graduate aggregate is 73.8 and topper’s is between 80 and 81….It’s like 80.5.
my in under graduate was ELECTRONICS AND INSTRUMENTATION.i would like to do ms in this stream or any electronics related stream.if possible..do u think that this score is reliable…..I mean is it k 2 rely upon this for a good university….I hadn’t given any paper presentations…..so don’t i have any chance…..of getting visa or admission in a good university????
i’ve cum to know that it’s better to opt US if and only if we get admission in top ten universities..is that so????some people said that it is not a good option to choose an avg university…what does avg university mean….don’t they impart good education??? i really have many many doubts…… Sir do u think that is it k to opt doing MS after working for an year….does that assit our performance????
@lasya
first thing i am not a sir..any ways…i am also from the same branch and i think u do have good chance of getting an ADMIT because ur academics is pretty good but funding will be a lil difficult to get in the first sem in universities like FDU, bridgewater clg, may be UTA..plz check it out . U can opt for control systems or electronics. And i really dunno wat the people mean by average universities. Listen there are over 3000 universities in USA. Now if you are going to a university which is in top 100 then also u are going to study with the top 3.33% students in USA..think it this way. Ask those people how many international students get into the top 10 unis..the answer will be 1% or even less. For giving ur application more weightage you can publish some papers even now…at IEEE or any local science magazine even. If you are having any extra certificates in sports or ECA then the weight of ur application will be even more. If u are working in any RELATED field of ur study then it will be a huge bonus for you. Apply positively, stop listening to pessimistic people. All the best.
i have only my school level sports certificates .i have shield at college level but no certificates….. nd i was selected for vision 2020 quiz competition conducted by infosys company..nd i have a certificate of that…Regarding extra curricular activities i participated nd took part in inaugurating symposiums nd debate nd group discussions…nd i won shield but we were not given any certificates…is this k if not i ‘ll work sumthng out abt my participation certificates…
u said Texas A&M university will b ambitious 4 me .i saw texas A&M,kingsvelle…and 2-3 texas A&M universities that were placed under different point categories in i20.com…which unis u meant…plz tell me…if i do job in s/w related field will that not b useful….????
i’m xtremely sorry….in a hurry i read oder’s reply….that’s texas A&M…my apologies…
Helllooo
Can u plz help me out….reg..in which univ will i get seat…4 CS…
I got 970-GRE..Verbal-310..Quant-660….
Acad’s-63.78%..with 1backlog(Cleared)…
TOEFL IBT…Yet 2 write…Expecting 85+
Soo Can u plzz..suggest me…
@ LASYA
umm…u got good chance at Texas A&M commerce..about kingsville well..its moderate for you..i20fever.com is good but do not trust on their pointing system as it is not always very accurate. See About the s/w job ..umm i too used to work in a software company but to say the true thing the work exp at s/w field does not carry much weightage if u are applying for ECE dept but if u want to go for CS then s/w job will be a huge bonus for u …now its upto u to decide. If u really want to wait for one year then give gre again but if u are waiting to do a job in s/w field and then apoplying to US at ECE dept then ..umm its not beneficial …
Yeah any sort of certificates will do..be it school level or clg level….try and send as many certificates as u can….u may think that some certificates are not worthed well..they can play even bigger role than ur GRE scores…u dunno wat they want from a student..so dun take chances and send every bit of “GOOD” information while applying..make urself look “Super humanly brilliant” in their eyes
.. gods speed and ALL THE BEST.
@ SANDY
Dude post all your credentials..or else its difficult to evaluate profiles.
Hi,
I wrote my gre on 14th august and scored 1060 with 310 in verbal and 750 in quant.
I got my 6th sem results and have backlogs in 2 subjects. However i have applied for reval. Will it be ok if i send transcripts only upto my 5th sem because i havent had any backlogs untill then Will I be eligible to apply?
@Aravind: You would need atleast 6 semester of transcripts. It will be difficult to evaluate your profile with 5 semesters. I would suggest you wait and apply.
ur doing great work dude, keep up
