The Secret to Make Money as a Graduate Student

in PhD

It’s always interesting to read experience posted by a Graduate student. Some of the ideas discussed here applies to PhD students, but it done right, Masters students can benefit too.  International student applying for Graduate School in U.S. is supposed to do this kind of research before selecting the universities and have to be aware of what to expect during the course of education and how money (Financial Aid, stipends, ..) are given to students.

Don’t assume that if you apply for admission, they have to give you aid. Just think for a second. Would you be comfortable in giving money to a stranger without knowing, if you will get good services (research work) from them? Thats why most International students (even qualified), have to work with a professor for a semester, prove his skills and before you can get funding. Having good academics [ Academics = Transcripts + GRE + GPA] will not  get you financial aid always.

PhD and Financial Aid

  • PhD candidates tend to have tuition waivers and stipends for teaching and research assistantships.
  • The secret to making money as a graduate student is to apply to the RIGHT program and work with the RIGHT faculty
  • It is important to find out what kinds of grants and funding faculty members bring into a program.  Those grants will be your source of income at the PhD level beyond the funding provided by the department.
  • Graduate school prepares students to be better writers and offers the necessary skills to find funding.
  • Outside of academia, you may have to write proposals to fund your work.
  • Life is too short not to enjoy some things now just because I think I can do them after school is over.  My life is happening now, not in three years from now.
  • Grad school is your chance to discover new things. Do not be afraid to tell potential advisors that you don’t know what you want to do.

Above wonderful points were posted by Alex at Pixie658 Grad Student Q&A – Now Gimme Money.  You also read more details on how she

  • Uses the loan money to pay for Grad school (Masters)
  • Doing Masters while working
  • Sacrifices made to lifestyle to pay for college.
  • Alex has 5 Articles about Graduate School in her blog.

Spend lot of time in her blog, read all the 5 articles published so far. When you get a chance to read such wonderful articles, take notes and apply them  to your Grad school search process.
