  • Check if Minimum GRE for New Scores  have changed with respect to University requirements.
  • Remember 800 in Old GRE Quantitative equals to 166 in New GRE Format.
  • Check if that conversion is reflected in the minimum requirements.

Also, use the following list of universities for your consideration. You might not have heard about some of the universities, visit respective websites to explore their Computer Science and Electrical Engineering programs.

M.S. Computer Science

Autumn quarter is our primary quarter for graduate admissions; international applicants will be considered only for Autumn admission. In addition to a strong computer science background, a student will be considered for admission with:

  • GPA minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • TOEFL (when required) minimum 550
  • GRE Verbal minimum 500 (153 new), Quantitative minimum 700 (155 new), Analytical minimum 4 (new format)
  • GRE CS subject test is strongly recommended for those whose undergraduate degree is not in computer science

For admission in all other quarters, only domestic applicants will be considered. More stringent objective criteria are in force:

  • GPA minimum 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • GRE Verbal minimum 650 (163 new), Quantitative minimum 700 (159 new), Analytical minimum 5 (new format)

University of Massachusetts Amherst

  • The GRE test is required. The subject test is strongly encouraged by the Computer Science Department
  • Although standardized tests are by no means the only criteria considered, historically successful applicants average 600+/4.0 in each of the three areas (verbal, quantitative, written). Based on the new scale we expect the average would be 160+ (verbal), 155+ (Quantitative), 4.0 (Written).

I’m applying for MS in CS as well as MS in Telecomm. Funding will decide where I land up. Kindly let me know what are my chances.

    B.Tech in Electronics and Telecommuincations.

    • Forgot my mention my undergrad grades : 8.75/10.

      Thanks.

      • More info :
        TOEFL : 96.
Undergrad Project : in Telecomm. (coincides with my Area of Interest for MS in Telecomm)

    Applying to Optics programs at:
    1-Uni of Arizona
    2-Uni of Central Florida
    3-Uni of North Carolina Charlotte
    4-Uni of Colorado Boulder
As my AWA percentile was nowhere close to 80 (in fact 48), I dropped the Institute of Optics Rochester application. They ask for 80th percentile in all three measures. Not sure if I was right in this decision.
I have one year experience in Atomic and Optical physics lab and at Light and Matter physics group at Raman Research Institute, Bangalore. My bachelor degree is in Information Technology(74%). iGPA calculator gives 3.85/4. What are my chances to get an admission? Apart from these I am trying in European optics and photonics programs like Europhotonics, OpSciTech and Imperial College London. But sadly I have no publications which puts me in doubt.

    • I think you need to find the universities for yourself or select few of them and come back ,so that people can advice whether you can get an admit from the selected universities.

The better way is that the HSB contains blogs regarding the Average scores for the universities or I would rather advice you to work on your verbal ability and retake the GRE examination, since a college require a benchmark in verbal ability in the student. It is not likely to get an admit even you have high grad acads,I hope your TOEFL might not be poor rather .

Or may be you can reach out to some consultancy which has tie ups with good universities and assure you admission into those universities ,This option is only liable when you run out of opportunities.

      Good Luck

    • Give your GRE again…other wise if you are interested appy for westren kentucky, dakota state…funding is more in that university. apply for MIS if ur intention is just to complete master and get a job here in US.

  40. @ HSB ,

    Thank you for replying.
The reason I applied for Gtech is because I personally know an ex- professor from Gtech who is willing to recommend to the university.
My query was will a recommendation from an ex professor help in getting admission?

    • Maybe a bit of a chance but LORs can be very effective if the profile of the letter is very high,However the LOR from the ex-professor carries a lot of value to your admit !

  44. USA Admissions system is similar to Infy/Wipro/TCS freshers shortlisting.
Its a rat race based on grades and GRE scores. Hell with such system which doesn’t recognize genuine talent. I’d rather go to European/UK countries instead of wasting my time, energy and money into application to US universities, which I feel is kinda gambling, you may or may not get ‘lucky’ to do your precious graduate studies in the university you like, with professors you like to work with.
If you want, you can be a competent graduate student anywhere EU/UK/US. Finally the work you do at university, the kind of collaboration you do with professors is what matters. And as for the BIG question/myth of after MS jobs, again, if you are the right candidate with up-to-date skills and stellar MS profile, you will be welcomed to work with a good organization.

Throughout your academic years in India you were compared/judged with grades, with your friends, relatives, etc. A single mark also made difference. If you have to do the same to thing to go to graduate studies too, its like falling for the same sh*tty trap. You decide whether you want to be respected for your genuine interest and skills or to participate in rat race with luck to get selected .

  47. Hi HSB sir,

Been following your site and FB page since quite a while..wana thank u for all the priceless information you have provided to clueless people like me. I am finally applying to universities after some reluctance since my acads were useless…abt 55% from Mumbai University which is much tougher than other universities in India..anyways, I tried to make up with my GRE and TOEFL scores…got 1210 in gre with 780 in quant and 103 in toefl. I am applying to USC, UFL, NYU Poly, NEU, RIT, UTD, SJSU, Suny Buffalo.
I know you are very busy but if I am lucky to get a reply, I will be deeply grateful!
    Thanks and regards,
    Ayush.

    • Major?

      • oops I forgot to mention…CS sir…n if it helps, I have been working in an IT company in Bangalore for over a year and would complete 1 n half years before leaving for MS. Thanks! :)

    • Hello Ayush

Mumbai University is not much tougher than many other universities -Anna University ,JNTU-H,K,A,Satyabama University etc .However the degree of toughness is not evaluated with your profile by the Universities.

      Thank You

      MAVERICK

      • Hi Maverick,
I dunno which unv. you are from but my roomie is from Anna n he told me that half their marks come from internal assessment whereas we are totally on the mercy of our 100 marks written paper. Also, getting 70% in JNTU is considered average whereas my class topper must have 75% and there are hardly 5-6 guys who crossed 70% in my class..so you know what i mean..
Anyways, my point is not abt how tough a university is but about my chances in the unvs where i have applied..So i’d be thankful if you can help me with ur opinion on that…many thanks!

My scores are as follows :
    Verbal : 146
    Quant : 153
    Awa: 3.0

I have applied to the following universities

    Illinois institute of technnology
    University of delaware
    University of connecticut
Georgia Tech ( I know its impossible with just my scores alone :) )

Will be applying to University of Texas at Arlington and Dallas.

I have applied to the department of computer science and Engineering for fall 2012.
I have BE aggregate of 70 % and I have been working with Wipro technologies since 2010.

Does work experience help in admissions? and does an LOR from an ex professor from XYZ university help in getting admission into the same XYZ university??

Kindly let me know your views.

    • Work experience helps with MBA, but not much with MS. Why are you wasting application money with GTech?

      • HI ,
I strongly disagree with your last line which says why are you wasting time with gtech. Each University has its own criterion so I dont think its waste , if he gets in you might say its luck again.
About your views on work exp not going well with Ms also is not quite convincing. If i have the required technical exposure , I am a good candidate to study there. i am not talking abt doing a prodn support project i am talking abt proper development. I work in the telecom domain today and want to specialize in networks , Why would my work experience not matter in that case ? . One needs to mention this clearly in the SOP. You need to come out of that marks mentality. The work you blog is doing is very commendable , but I am sorry to say marks and gre score is not everything. If one has the conviction , even the IVY league is not difficult to get into.

        • It very common for students from India to pick 2 to 3 schools which they have no shot at getting admit. Admission process is not like game of dice where I’m going to spend time and $$ to try my luck. Only information I have about the person posting comment is information provided. I have seen several thousands of students and profiles. Lot of things are inter-related. If you have scored less than average score in GRE as a Computer science student with AWA of 3.0 and expecting “by luck” GTech will admit you? Please come down from Fantasy world.

You need work experience for MBA (MUSt), but for MS, you have almost the same chance as someone in final year of college applying for admission.

        • I am not suggesting “luck” to someone who wants to get into a CS course in a good university. One needs to have some substance in him or her. Besides this , I think the AWA scores are critical but not very critical for MS program . 3 is decent score for someone trying just an MS. It is important to have high scores if one is applying for PhD then GRE and math scores become critical because your AWA will then define your abilities to write down what you have done during research.

Also , I am not talking about work experience of 6 months or 4 months. My friends think getting out of college and working for some company for 6 months and then trying to show off that work experience will count. NO it wont. That kind of work experience wont count even for MBA. Work experience is not a fancy word. After 2+ years in the industry if you want to still study , I think thats a strong point . If you happen to take an LOR from your office , how will the person writing it justify ? But , say if your are working for 3 years, and have done some really good and challenging technical work to back your exact purpose of doing your MS and you are able to convince them that your program is the only one one that can help me then i think your conviction matters. And sometimes even a brilliant score cant get you in.

        • Hello Sandeep

And btw i dont think so working on pre-researched project in a company will give you a technical exposure ,and for MS i think the higher number of research projects you attend and the Letter Of Recommedations will valuate higher than working in an Infy or a Wipro.

And btw if you are that confident that someone without an average GRE score can give a shot at Gtech then what are the students above the par score looking at ?

        • however,It’s a gamble with the universities while some universities will give a sure shot admits since they evaluate the student’s profile with benchmarks they set and evaluate them with .

But some of them evaluate with different standards which still remain as a mystery and when it comes to Financial Aid and Scholarships ,God should know :)

        • Hi Maverick

Old GRE existed for 10 years before it changed. So after 5 – 6 years after it came into existence things started becoming repetitive as the number of words for GRE still remained 3500 approx. Scoring became easy . You could take GRE every now and then with no restrictions. The new GRE is not little different , i would say a lot different from the old one and hence the scores will drop. The universities are themselves not sure about what a good score will be . And GRE does not differentiate a good student form an average one. One should strongly focus and justify why you want to do your MS. It should not be like I am done with Engg , so MS is the only thing i can do next.

Many people dont know how to create a class in java by the time they complete their engineering. I have seen toppers from different colleges with big big CGPs not having a strong technical background. So just scoring good marks or GRE scores will not guarantee or prove or differentiate a good student from an average one. Work exp exposes you to the latest methodologies. Try working for ericsson if you are a telecom student or scheider R&D if you want to gain knowledge on automation .. You will know the importance of work experience… Again dont count anything below 2 years as work exp.

Please understand , I am not kindling flase hopes in any student here and respect the owner of this Blog, but thw whole statement that and the trend which people are following and expecting GRE scores to be a VERY BIG criterion is some what disturbing.

        • @ Sandeep , Maverick ,

I think this conversation started from my profile. :D
I almost have 2 years of work experience and even I work in the Telecom domain with well renowned client (NokiaSiemensNetworks) , but I haven’t learned much technically ( this is the case with most Indian MNC’s ) but this 2 years of work experience have given me good exposure and I am just hoping to get admission with my average gre score. As mentioned earlier , the reason I applied to Georgia Tech is because of an ex – professor of Gtech who is willing to recommend me to Gtech . I hope his reco adds value to my profile.
Almost all universities have mentioned their minimum criteria like GRE and stuff but they have also mentioned that its not the only deciding factor for admissions , it clearly says final admission decisions are based on a combination of factors, including academic degrees and records, the statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, test scores, and relevant work experience.

Very Good GRE score , and no one cares about your college u have graduated from unless it’s an iit or Famous NIT.I am expecting that you might not be an iitian for now since i have a reason.
To the point, very good GRE score and good academic percentage .Do you have any Projects .LOR ?

Anyway i can tell you few universities which you can get an admit for sure .TAMU,USC,NJIT,UTDallas,Carnegie Mellon University,University of Maryland,GIT .

Kindly check out the HSB since i am rather not sure which will suit your profile

Can i get admission in any usa university ?

    • Hello Jagdeesh

      U can

      • hey HSB….
but most of d uni’s ask for 3 out of 4 CGPA ..
if v dont hav dat n hav a gud gre scr arnd 290- 310…do v really hav a chance of geting into gud uni’s

        • I was myself a little worried about the 3.0 benchmark. So i decided to dig the sites of various universities and find out exactly what they want when they mean 3.0 . In one of the top 7 universities sites i found out what they want. For indians , 3.0 plus is equivalent of 55% plus. It said clearly – Upward of 55% . So dont break your head with 3 CGP. more than 55% is good to apply, not sure if its good to get an admit.
