Possible to study M.S. in US after M.Tech in India?

By HSB

Ajay had 5 questions about possibility of studying Masters in Computer Science in America after completing M.Tech in India. Very few students posting comments here at HSB have such thoughtful questions,

Questions have been answered separately

I am finding happyschoolsblog very interesting and informative.
I am pursuing my M.Tech in CSE which will be completed in 2009.
I feel that it was not worth while studying M.Tech here in a mediocre university and I am now very much keen on getting a M S degree from USA.

Definitely agree to your comment “I feel that it was not worth while studying M.Tech here in a mediocre university”

1. What do you think about me getting an admission in US University despite of me having a Master degree from India?

Many students have got admission in US and studying in US after completing Masters Degree in India. During visa interview, you might have a question about second Masters Degree. Be prepared to give the right and correct answer.

2. I see in lots of University websites about MS in Computer Science? How do I find what are the other different majors the school offers ? Usually, I look in CS departments for different majors, but most of them have MS in CS ?

MS in CS is the degree offered by the University, but you can opt to study different courses. For example, you can study courses in Computer Networking or Robotics, but the degree awarded will be MS in CS. Look for Universities that offers Major of your interest.

3. Do you think getting scholarship in India during M.Tech study and having one year internship experience, M.Tech average of 67% and with good GRE will help me get some sort of financial AID.

Term “Good GRE Score” is subjective. 900 will be good GRE Score to you, whereas 1400 is good GRE Score for me. So, give your exact score to know the chances of getting admission with Scholarship. Also, admission to graduate school depends on all the admission factors, not just GRE Score and 67% Academics. 67% in your college is not same as 67% from different university in different state within India.

4. What aggregate do US Universities consider ? As in my degree certificate of B.E it mentions about class considering only 5th to 8th sem (which makes my % less compared to 8 sems average) or will they consider all 8 semester aggregate? or the degree % and class mentioned in degree certificate is final?

Refer to Minimum Graduate School admission requirements, it will be usually in GPA. but, percentage to GPA conversion is not possible. So, it actually varies between department and college. There is no hard and fast rule on which semester marks to consider among universities. They try to get overall percentage score usually.

5. What shall I mention in Statement of Purpose?

It’s not simple question to answer in few lines. Refer to Sample Statement of purpose and also find the qualities that university look within SOP.
