Applying to U.S. Universities require you to enter GPA. But if transcripts have grades in percentage then students try to convert
- Convert Percentage(100) to GPA(4.0)
- Convert CGPA(10.0) to GPA(4.0)
I was in the same situation and few years back searching for different ways to use the GPA Calculator and came to know what to expect while calculation GPA.

If you are looking for some table that will map your percentage score to GPA like this one

I can very well say, you are making a huge mistake. If you want to know why above table will not work, you need to first understand what is GPA and how GPA is calculated. Many students even after reading this article ask the question – How to calculate GPA from their academic score. Hope you can read the article atleast twice before you ask the same question.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
Percentage Score (1 to 100) is used various countries, but in U.S. Schools use GPA system is used fo grading studnets.
GPA Vs Percentage
Both GPA and % assigns grades to students, they are essentially calculated in different ways. They are not the same or its not possible to equate or compare.
How GPA is Calculated
Grades will be assigned to student for each course ( A = 4.0; B = 3.0; C = 2.0 ; D = 1.0; F = 0; )
And each course has Credit Hours. Usually Graduate level courses will have 3 Credit Hours per course.
Lets’ say at end of the semester, professor assigns grade of B to Course Database, Grade A to Course Networks and Grade A to course Software Testing. GPA is calculated as follows
- Total Grades = Sum of (Grade * Credit Hours)= B*3 + A*3 + A*3 = 3*3+4*3+4*3 =33
- Total Credit Hours = 3+3+3 = 9
- GPA = Total Grades/Total Credit Hours = 33/9 = 3.66
Universities will have some some form of evaluation to convert percentage to GPA and that varies with each University. They have their own GPA calculator.
So, you really can’t convert academic percentage or CPGA to GPA. So, it would be better to write percentage in the college admission application. Colleges will know what to do with your percentage score. You can write like 79/100 or 79%. that is more than enough.

I am totally confused while calculating GPA to percentage but what i know from the mentors is MUMBAI UNIVERSITY first class i.e 60% and more have great chance in US, also one of my friend studying at OHIO university had 58% IN BE from MUMBAI, says his GPA was found out to be 3 but he has a decent GRE of 1520 and TOEFL of 105. So mumbai university guys just chill, US universities are aware that mumbai university has low scores but not low on academics.

my ug univ gave me an aggregate of 84% after my final sem….the univ topper got 90….i stick to the rules and try not to convert my marks to gpa arbitrarily but some univs ask me to grade my marks in individual courses…….i totally dont get it…..help me out…how do i convert my marks in courses to grades if my univ doesnt supply a conversion mechanism….

Sir,my university provided a totally differnt system. ie they award both CGPA as well as percentage.MY CGPA on 10 point scale is 6.2 which is equal to 69 % acording to university coneversion rule.
So plz tell me which to take into account CGPA of 6.2 or pecentage of 69% on 4 point scale??plz help me
If as you say, it's not possible to accurately determine the equivalent gpa , is it one of the important criterion for admission to most univeersities?
You are right, but the University worry about converting your GPA. 60% in Mumbai University will can Top Rank holder, but 93% will be Top rank holder in Anna University in Tamil Nadu. So, if you calculate GPA it doesn't make any sense.

Thanks although im still not sure of the conversion since what i learned is that GPA is relative grading which is also depended on the overall score…
