Hi!
This site is much informative I think.I completed M.Sc. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. My CGPA in B.Sc. is 3.34 @ scale 4 and in M.Sc. is 3.25.
I have a paper publication. No GRE/TOEFL yet. Have plan but I think the score will not be more than average. I want to do PhD from any reputed US University on Electromagnetics.
- Is it possible to get admission for PhD?
- Any possibility to get scholarship?
- What will be the right semester for 2010?
Please help me.
Admision for PhD?
You can certainly get admission for PhD, but GRE and TOEFL Scores alone will not get admission. It has lot to do with your interests, Letter of Recommendation, Statement of purpose, research interests. Your paper publication will be an added advantage.
PhD with Scholarship
Having strong academic profile is one thing, but you must know how to express yourself in the PhD application. Basically, you will need to market yourself as strong candidate for research. We are actually going to teach exactly how to market your skills while applying for Graduate School through Happy Schools Blog – Premium Membership Club. You chances of getting admission with scholarship increases by presenting high value documents.
Which Semester 2010
That option largely depend son your personal situation and other things. To apply for Spring 2010, you should have GRE and TOEFL by Mid July for PhD. It will take another 2-3 months to find the right schools. For Fall 2010 semester, it’s better to submit the application by end of November 2009.
Suggestions
When asking questions in forums and blogs like this, try to be give more detailed information. For instance you said
Have plan but I think the score will not be more than average.
Average GRE Scores for you might be 950 and I might conside Average GRE Score to be 1300. There is no way to give a definitive answer for generalized question.

Hello sir,
So many times you told that if your long term goal is PHD then directly apply in PHD instead of MS.As per my information typically PHD takes around 4 years without MS degree. We may not get funding for 1st year but then we can expect it. My question is that if within the required time we can not complete the proposed research or it require some more time to complete it then will they provide funding for this extra duration?
And i had heard some colleges just gives assistance ships which will not cover tuition. Then should we take the risk of applying in this colleges with limited balance in our account?
If you will get financial aid through out the duration of PhD, not for specific period. You have to understand the difference between In-state fee and out of state fees.
Thanks a lot sir for giving me a ray of hop. And really it helps me in taking right decision.
And sir as per my information outstation tuition can be converted into instate tuition.Am i right, sir?
Moreover,i was informed that professor will pay our tuition which will not accounted towards fellowship or stipend. So,we should not worry about fees and just concentrate on study without fear.At which extent this is true? And is it true for every US university?
Hello Sir!
I hope you can help me with some advice as my GRE score is borderline for top 50 US univ. I’ve just had my GRE exam yesterday, I’ve done 1300 (Q730 & V570). I have a GPA of 3.6 (or 8.95 on 10 scale for 5y bachelor in Applied Physics and 9.92 for 1y master Nanostructures) and just my theses research projects. I’m interested in PhD in Materials or Electrical and I hope to get admit with a RA/TAssitanship. I also have 2y R&D in a Petrochemicals company on polymers. Should I only consider top 50-100 universities? Any chance with my score for Rensslaer, PennState, TexasTech, Texas Arlington, Viterbi? Should I go even lower?
Thank you.
John

Please take a moment of your precious time and guide me
is it possible to directly get admitted to PhD if you have not done your post graduate, that means one will be doing 5 years
2 yrs MS and then PhD
my son is doing his B.E mech final year in India, Anna university, Tamilnadu. and he is in his final year will be completing his B.E by 2010.
he is preparing for his GRE AND TOEFL and will be writing by mid October 2009. so that we can apply for 2010 fall.
we were goggling to find out the ranked university , the snag is the tuition cost.for example.MIT the fees is us$ 37000 per year , apart from living expenses, accommodation, books and other expenses are extra it will be around 60k us $ per annul, if one takes in to account of 2 yrs it will be around us $ 1,20,000
converting to Indian rupees will be around 60,00,000 6 million rupees
quite huge for an average Indian,
so what is the way is to go directly to PhD, admission
as Kris Bista suggest.
friends do enlighten us
so that the dream studying at good university for an average indian
we are willing to spend some money say 10 to 15 laks
but 6 million for one child
where can we afford
guide us please
thanks

It takes lot of money to study in US, but for PhD most of the students will get some form of scholarship. So, it will not cost the full amount to study PhD.
Hi
I am finishing my m.tech course by june 2010. Is there any possibility of applying phd for fall 2010.
can i apply for phd now or i have to apply after the completion of my present course. please suggess me. I had my GRE and TOEFL sores as 960 and 80. Is it possible for me to apply for fall 2010.
Rahul, you can apply for PhD in Fall 2010 before completing your M.Tech. You may have ot retake GRE 960 score is not sufficient for PhD, well depending on the major.
Hello Guys!
If you are seeking admission and fellowship, I suggest the following steps:
1. Google the best schools in the location you like to come and study.
2. Select 10 schools from 1 to 10 ranking, you can go: http://www.petersons.com
3. See the admissions requirement. Remember you should have GRE at least 1000 and TOEFL at least 80 IBT.
4. Write several email correspondences to your professors, admission advsiors and the other
5. Based the feed and response, make application both online and paper to get the sport.
6. See all the required documents before the deadline. For fall-Dec 15, Some schools accept your application till Feb 15.
NB: no good school offers you PhD in Spring.
Good luck and show your rationale to be a PhD scholar. Move your butt!

Thank you so much! Thanks!
