Salary negotiation is difficult, unless you are well prepared for salary negotiation, your salary offered will be less than average entry level salary for that particular position.

Do you know how to negotiate salary? If not continue reading for tips on salary. As far I know most of my friends who got the job didn’t really have any clue about salary negotiation. Most of them we just content with job offer itself and the happy feeling just drops off when they hear their first salary offer. Because, most of the students, including me did few mistakes during Salary negotiation process. But, following some of the steps and practicing it mentally will help you to get involved in Salary negotiation with much more confidence.

Salary negotiation Mistakes:

Entry level student who are in OPT status is very desperate to find a job with a company who will sponsor H1B Visa. Usually, it will take 4-6 months to get a job. But, if the student start the job search process well before graduation, then within couple of months they should find a entry level job. But, majority of the students start looking for jobs only after they graduate( more about when to graduate to apply for H1B Visa from OPT). Under this scenario, time is running out for them to file H1B Visa before April 1st. OPT is valid only for 1 year from date of graduation. When offered with a job, they accept the offer even without asking for higher salary. So, next question is why didn’t they negotiate salary and accept the offer that was given, if I were to ask students we will get any of the following response

  1. I really don’t know how to negotiate salary
  2. I was reluctant to ask for higher salary
  3. I was overwhelmed with job offer itself and I accepted the offer on the spot ( or on phone call)
  4. I was expecting lower offer, but got 5k to 10k more than I was expecting
  5. During interview process, HR said, salary is non-negotiable
  6. I didn’t know how much was average salary for the job being offered to me in that particular city.
  7. Salary offered was less, but they are sponsoring my H1b Visa and I was content with that.
  8. I didn’t know Salary negotiation is actually possible.
  9. Salary offered was less, but I will take this offer with H1B visa and after 1 year, I will find a higher paying job.

I can add few more if I spend more time in thinking what possible reasons one can give for not negotiating the salary. If you enjoyed this article, you can book mark it in Delicious or Digg It.
