Following questions come to play when deciding on the schools…
- Does everyone get Tuition Waiver/RA/TA/Part time jobs
- What is the cost of living
- How many people will stay in the apartment
- Temperature/ Safety
- Will I get job after I complete my degree.
- Shall I go to this school, since I have a friend/senior ( if you have girl/boy friend, that’s n
different issue!! )
The list doesn’t end there…
I’m sure everyone will have such questions and finding answers to those is difficult, unless you get to talk to certain people from that school or professors..
What is RA/TA/Tuition Waiver
Research Assistantship ( RA )
In US schools, professors will be working on research projects. Those projects will be funded from source ( university, nearby companies, NSF, and so on….). Funding will based on the size/complexity of the project). So, professor will pay the students who are interested to work on this project. Usually, the pay will vary from $400 to $1500 per month. Some schools will give In-state tuition fee if you get RA/TA. Students complete the work give to them as Projects ( 20 hrs per week) or it will be considered as Thesis, if you had to solve the problem with guidance from the Proff.
Teaching Assistant ( TA )
TA’s help the professors in grading assignments, projects, preparing the lab, preparing assignments or at time take classes in the absence of the Proff. they get paid $400 to $1500 depending on the school policies and work load.
Tuition Waiver ( Scholarship)
Based on academic performance, GRE, TOELF score, scholarship will be awarded. There are different types of scholarship. More about that later.
How to know what kind of Aid is available in the school. Best way to figure that is to mail students and ask for help.
There is one common mistake everyone makes. If one student doesn’t have aid, that doesn’t mean that particular school, doesn’t give aid to students at all. Try to find info from different department major students.
