Questions about College essay Questions ( SOP )

By HSB

The following are the most common:

Recall an event or experience that left a mark on the type of person that you are.

This question actually constitutes a whole package. It does not only ask about the event per se but it asks about a milestone in your life. It also tries to figure out who you are. What do you value the most? What are your accomplishments?

Though it is basically a question of achievement, don’t go about narrating every accomplishment you’ve made in graphic details. If possible, name just one major accomplishment that made a big impact. Or you can look for patterns and talk about the gist of the whole thing. Avoid mentioning those that are already written in your resume.

Do not hesitate to talk about small accomplishments if it’s all that you’ve got. Sometimes what is most remarkable about a person is how he or she manages to turn little things into something of significant worth.

Do not make the mistake of comparing the present you to the past you. If you do so, take a lot of precaution. You don’t want to end up overstating what a failure you used to be, of how terrible you were as a person. You are facing the danger of making these negative imageries stick to the consciousness of the readers. You will fail to make a good impression.

How do you picture yourself ten years from now? How will the college contribute to the fulfillment of your goals?

Do picture yourself aged ten years more. Think of the things you wish to achieve. Think of the things you value the most. Moreover, this question is basically a probe on why you made the institution your choice of college to attend to. A little research about the institution will be very helpful. Find out what the mission and goals of the college are. Figure out the existing culture in the university. Check for congruence between the characteristics of the college and your own.

Do you model yourself against a person? Or is there any famous figure that made an impact in your life? He or she can be a fictional character, a historical figure, a famous celebrity or a significant someone in your life.

This is yet another way of gauging the type of person that you are. It tries to look at the important changes you have gone through, the values that you hold most dear and the response you make to environmental stimuli. This being said, do not make the mistake of focusing too much on describing the figure you have chosen. For one, your readers are not interested in the influential person; they are interested in you. So talk about the person’s attribute that makes the most impact on you instead. Talk about how it has helped shape your personality.

Discuss a current issue and describe how it affects you.

Again, be personal. Talk about the forces in your personal life (upbringing, family values and the like) that make the issue of significant importance to you. Appeal both to reason and emotions.

These college essay questions are simple. You only need some creativity and sincerity to address them effectively.
