Survey Methodology: Data contained in the NACE Salary Survey are produced through a compilation of data derived from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, and a master data set developed by Job Search Intelligence. Data for the January 2013 Salary Survey report were retrieved in November 2012, and were compiled using a proprietary methodology created by Job Search intelligence.

Chemical and Petroleum Engineers usually top the list of Salaries in Engineering Field.
- Lowest range is for Humanities and Social Science – $29,644
- Highest range is for Engineering at $73,387 and Computer Science at $69,859
Even though this data is for New college grads with Bachelors degrees, based on my experience for Masters degree starting Salaries for Engineering and Computer Science is comparable.

The Min & Max salaries differs from place to place in US so are their taxes. In CA it is 80K to 110K for Masters with good acadamics.

Living expense 500-700 bucks? For a professional? What are they, saints? You understand that living expenses for students and professionals are different, right? And why is this guy pissed off if companies offer MORE than needed? Normalcy is that its the other way round, right?

why the salaries are astronomical? even $29,644 is way too much for a fresh grad!

your counter-question is NOT the answer to what i have asked for. my query was HOW one is going to justify this huge starting salary.
the living expenses per month is 500 – 700 bucks. even if i take this post published at hsb the figure is less than 500. we can safely assume that a person needs around 10 grands pa for basic needs. and here we see that the minimum salary starts from 25k! everywhere else in the world the inherent pattern of a fresh grad’s salary is in such a fashion that it almost exhausts after satistying one’s basic needs. the starting salary for the fresh grads should have been in the range of 12 – 15 thousand dollars per annum.

If you’re a student, 12-15K per annum is enough. When you’re working, 12-15K is near the poverty line.
You seem to have an issue with fresh grads making a good amount and living comfortably.
can you substantiate with facts that When you’re working, 12-15K is near the poverty line. give me the breakup of monthly expenses for working people. don’t forget that if you are working in your home city your expenses will be much less as the apartment cost will not be needed. and what about free food ie food stamps? i am not sure but i have heard that it is for all americans – be it rich or poor. in cities like new york you don’t even need a car as there is excellent and cheap transportation like buses and pedicabs.

i never said that the fresh grads will always stick to 25k or 30k.
