Students, Do You Have a Car in USA?

Raghuram Sukumar —  October 28, 2011 — 24 Comments

Lets check if students in USA have a car? If not, how do they get things done (shopping, commute, bank work, ..)

I would like current students to answer the following questions

  • Do you have a car? If not how do you manage without a car?
  • If you have a car, what kind and how much did you pay for it?

Car is required in USA, but students might be able to manage their day-to-day life without car.

Sooner or later, you will end up buying a car.

Here is an  Ultimate Car Buying Guide that you must read before planning to buy a used car or new car.

  1. I own a 2003 BMW 3 series. I study at University of Houston, Texas and it takes 2 buses or 1 bus and 1 tram to make it to the university. Although in a car it takes only 10 to 15 mins to travel nearly 4.5 miles buses take nearly half an hour to an hour via longer routes. In summer it becomes pretty horrible to even move around inside the university. So I went for the car. Its a need and very advantageous to have one in Houston !!

  2. I’m at NC State University.. I don’t have a car.. It’s difficult to manage without a car here too. But thankfully some seniors help me when I want to go somewhere for important works..

  3. I am studying at San Jose State University and I live in Santa Clara, about 8 miles from school. First few days, my aunt used to drop me. Now i travel by the VTA Bus. It’s free for SJSU students. It takes about 40mins to reach school.

  4. I attend the University of Kentucky,Lexington. We have good bus transportation in the city cos its a small city.Free buses all the day within the campus. There is a bicycle library where they give away cycles for free by lottery system to the students for the semester.I was lucky to get one cos someone who win did not claim it.So,transportation is not a major problem here.None of my immediate seniors own a car.Only those who lived here for a minimum of 4 years(PhD students) buy a car.

  5. Yes i have a car. at texas it is defficult if you do not have a car

  6. life in arlington , texas is paralysed without a car. no public transportation at all. so far i have been getting a ride from my friends and seniors , but if you plan to come to arlington , you will need to buy a car.

    • Hi Amir,
Soon I’ll be part of UTA ,
may you please reply with estimate living expenses and job facility for student?

      With best regards
      Thnx.

  7. I am a graduate student at State University of New York at Binghamton, New York in Computer Science Department. I came here in Fall 2010. I completed my MS in 1 year and currently working with Barclays Capital, New York. Bus facilities at my school was very good. We had City Bus service as well School Bus Service . The school charges only one time fee of $ 40 per semester for providing this unlimited service. Also, We don’t even need rent a cab for going to grocery stores as there was periodical bus to Walmart. There are plenty of grocery store near my place where I live. Overall it was very good life there. No worries. These thing I feel when I joined job in NY.

    • Hi Sandeep,

      Thanx

  8. In Carbondale, IL you do not need a car to get things done. The university charges bus fee and provides ride to all the places we might need to go. How ever while returning from the grocery stores with a lot of stuff, I usually call the cab which costs about $5 one way.

  9. in fact i reached usa just beforw two weeks. i will stay in Lincoln in NE. You can live here without a car. Noway. I discoved that when i reached so if you planning to be in UNL university you should bring enough money to buy a car. No way to use the bus because there is only one

  10. This is my first semester, & of course year too, in the US and got no car to date. But it’s free for all student to use city bus and found it pretty much enough so far. Plus the campus also provides free bus services with scheduled times. For more flexibility having a car would be good, till then enjoying the free ride and observe the routes for cost effective driving later on.

  11. In Gainesville, having a car is a plus, but not mandatory. The city has very good bus service and that’s free for all students, staff, faculty and their family members. Although the bus service is reduced on weekends, but still it is not a big deal because the reduced bus service is pretty decent to visit Walmart etc. But if you want to travel around on weekend outside the reduced bus service area, you must need a car.

  12. This is my first semester. and no car as of now. College is just 5-10 min walk and even Walmart.
For other long distances, seniors take us on weekends and some times Metro buses.

  13. do not have a car … bus services within campus are decent, weekend trips to shopping malls…but if we run out of ration on weekdays, its difficult…

  14. I have a Mercury Milan 2007 and I paid 13K for it.
