Archives For higher education usa

Following is a guest post submitted by HSB reader who requested not to publish the name and college.

This is the famous dialogue from the famous movie “3 idiots” . But it has it’s own value and more importance in the life of the students who wants to pursue master’s in USA.

Success ke peeche mat bhaago .. excellence ka peecha karo .. kamyabi jhak maar k tumhare peeche ayegi MEANS if you want to be successful person, then don’t aim for being successful but instead aim for being excellent.

Education in USA

Welcome to land of opportunities which we call United States of America. Has anyone of you students ever think about what makes USA education unique. Have you really thought about it ?

You will say that it is more advance, it has cutting edge technology, it has more money, high living standards.

But really, what is the reason? What is the actual reason?

It is just a word i.e. “Excellence”

In India, 99% professors in 99% colleges have made 99% students habitual of doing nothing and credit goes to poor education plan, rote system, failure of motivation, boring classroom sessions, lack of interaction between student and teacher, politics and various other reason.

We have been taught from the beginning that if you will not get 90% percent marks, you will be left behind.

You will not have job. Society will not respect those who don’t have job and blah blah blah.

Result, lot of students just start studying for the purpose that they want to have job.

Their purpose is not to actual learn something from whatever they are studying but their goal is to get the job. And this is where the problem starts.

They get caught up in the education system which has no practical approach, which still goes with 5 year old curriculum where in the world every day some discovery is being made.

Having no practical approach in the studies and learning the definitions and formulas will not get you anywhere, least of all USA.

If you really want your life to be lot easier, then start doing your assignments yourself.

Get involved in the research, be genuinely interested in your subject.

Start looking for every problem in your studies or whatever you are studying with different angles. Start looking at every problem in your life with different angles.

That’s how you train yourself to become master of your field and this is the start you will definitely need when you will be in USA because the moment you will get out of your first ever class in the united states, you will feel ashamed of the education system of your college back in India.

Simply because of the fact that it is not based on excellence. It is based on grading for which frankly, no one will ever give a damn about.

Education in United States

In Unites states, you will just not learn about what you are here to learn, but also you will learn about what actually education is.

As in one scene of 3 IDIOTS, actor says to his professor,” I was teaching you how to teach the class“.

Same applies here. No professor will care about the grades as long as you are showing them you are actually learning, you are showing them you are actually applying your mind and you are showing them you have the capability to have an analytical approach of solving the problem.

They don’t want to see you passing the college with 4.0 GPA. They want you to leave the college with the knowledge that will help you to contribute to your field.

They want you learn that life is not about grades and race with someone.

It is about self improvisation, vision, dreams, honesty, integrity and excellent knowledge of your subject.

Why do you think they have colleges like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, UPENN, UPittsburgh, UNCC, U of Minnesota, Cornell and many others and all of which rank among top 50 everytime.

Why do you think they have maximum number of discoveries to their credit?

It is because of their education system.

I am in the class of 4 students and was able to answer some of the tough questions just because of analytical approach of solving the problems back in India.

Don’t gloat if you get admit from any US university because believe me, the actual thing is about to come.

Have a beer the night you get admit, but from next day you will have to get back to work and study even harder because my friend, Life is not easy and it will never be. Not even in the USA.

Here are some brilliant minds that you will find around yourself, which you find even in India but they often get lost.

These brilliant minds are such a company which can either motivate you or demotivate you, can make or break your life.

Have competition with such brilliant minds.

Have competition with their excellence and who knows, you might achieve excellence but just competing with their excellence.

Guest post by Vishnu about his dream and  job experience in India and he thinks Accepting Job at MNC Instead of Higher Education in USA is the Big Mistake.

mnc job in india

I want to share my experience.

I am from middle class family in India.

When I was in college I thought of many things like after i join into MNC i want to buy this, get that etc..

Now I completed my BTech, got job in top MNC , and i am an employee from 8 months,  but……

Joining MNC instead of higher education in USA is the big mistake I did .

Why Its a Big Mistake?

I thought of buying the mobile i like  (Samsung galaxy s2)

But it cost’s more than 1 month salary of mine.

I thought of buying bike.

It costs me my 4 months salary.

I thought of buying LED TV.

It even costs more than  my 1 month salary.

I want to gift a gold chain to my sister.

But with the salary i am earning it is almost impossible to me.

How many days I can work  in India for just for 3-5 Lakhs per year pay ($6000 to $10000) and getting everything I need by loan, and being happy with that?

Yes I agree moving to USA is the only option to fulfill our needs, its the only option.

Its matter of 3.5L/year or 3.5Lakhs/month.

Salary in USA

As you can see for Vishnu, Money and Dreams are his motivation. There is nothing wrong with that.

Some of you might argue that you need to consider Higher Education purely based on knowledge perspective.

But, if your aim is to make more money living and working in USA, then coming to USA for higher education is good dream to have.

Some of you might not agree to having such a dream. After reading the patriotic comments, you might call him by some names.

But, he has a dream to make  money and enjoy good lifestyle.

You have to fight to make your dreams come true.

It is possible to make money in India, but its will take time to go from 3 Lakhs per year to 15 Lakhs per year.

Even after taxes, you can save more money in USA.

Your Dreams in USA

You wanted to buy bike, TV, Smart Phone and Jewelery for your Sister.

  • Car in USA -  With Entry Level Job you can buy a New car in Loan and pay it off in 2 to 3 years.
  • Smart Phone – I’m Apple Fan and you can buy the latest iPhone. You don’t have to spend 1 month salary.
  • LED TV – Their prices are getting lower. I got my LCD 42″ 2 years back for $400 Samsung.
  • Jewelery – For sure, why not.

For Vishnu, it’s not like you are out of time.

If you get started now, you can be attending college in USA for Spring 2013 semester.

Darshan wants to know, higher education in USA or Job in India?

Higher Studies in USA or job in India

I’m applying for USA Fall 2012, but I was placed this year and if I do join the company, I will have to sign a bond for 15months. So, I was wondering if you could suggest me what to do. Please do help me. Eagerly waiting for your reply. – Darshan

Higher Studies in USA vs Job in India

You are not the first person to ask this question.

Lets look at options available for you and my thoughts.

  • Take this job and quit next August (still short of 15 months contract)
  • Return on investments for MS in US is much more than what you I would have gain 15 months work experience.
  • Value of Higher Education from USA is not comparable to working for IT consulting company (and for some  client).
  • If you don’t want to break the contract then apply for Spring 2014.
  • Find another job without  bond.

I don’t know about your family’s financial need. Also, you haven’t mentioned about your ability to pay for Higher Education in USA.

I know several families struggle to even pay for college expenses for BE in India. For such students, Rs15,000 monthly pay check is huge.

You have  had plans to apply for Fall 2012, then I assume you are financially capable of paying the expenses for education in USA.

At end of the day, you have to do what is best for you and once you make a decision, don’t feel bad about it.

I know, its late to apply for Fall 2012 (if you haven’t taken GRE by now).

Education will pay dividends in long run.

But, you have to ask some tough questions.

Will you have interest for higher studies in USA after working for 15 months?

If I were you, I would keep my  aim towards completing Graduate School in USA.

From my experience, knowledge gain in one semester from Grad school in USA is  equivalent 15 months of work experience.

Even then your problems solving and analytical skills gained  from Grad School will be way higher.

Why International Students in USA are Unique

My Father Proudly Declared “My Son is Going to USA”

Experiences like  above shows the value of higher education from USA.

Try your best to study in USA. If it doesn’t work out, then take the job in India.

Next Post – Be a Badass Person and Don’t Talk Shit About Your Employer.

I believe the intention to go to US for a few, not if all students is not just getting a green card, big cars or luxury but sometimes pursuit of research.

The Industry life in India is really screwed, people rarely get appraisals and appreciation on talent and the work they do. Chemical people, Civil, Electronics ppl getting in Infosys..what the hell.. Infosys or any IT firm may give money but what if someone wants some research profile in his area of interest, where he can work all his life without complaining…

Students sometimes aspire for studying in US as they feel top colleges can give them platform to improve their skills in our respective fields. They have talent, they have dream in their eyes to discover, not to be bonded in the monotonous environment of Indian IT Sector.

And it’s my thought that if you aspire something without greed, you might get it. Many students nowadays don’t go to USA for this purpose, but most go with purpose and dream of night life, american citizenship and luxurious life. MS/PhD can only be successful if you have heart and soul in them, they are not half hearted or sham. I had seen this in case of many of my friends.

Later when they can’t meet the standards required, as the competition is rigorous in US, they complain about not getting a job. Genuine and exceptions to that would be there I agree, some talented people might be in same situation but most people who undergo this situation are people dwelled by greed.

Perfect Example -

Person was working as contractor developing projects in VB.NET. When the project came for code review/testing it took several hours to execute one query to retrieve data from Oracle database. One page has to load the few thousand records as part of the application.

Looking the code, showed that person doesn’t have experience in writing efficient database oriented application when resume showed several years of VB.NET experience. So, the problem was new connection was established to retrieve single record from database, where single connection can be used to retrieve all the records. Apparently the person had Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering.

Share your thoughts about highlighted line above. I agree to that fact that coming from backgrounds other than computer science will have tough time designing or writing software code.
