Following the successful introduction of the GRE revised General Test, the GRE Program is now introducing the ScoreSelect option as one more enhancement to its more test-taker friendly platform. With the ScoreSelect option, GRE test takers can decide which test scores to send to the institutions they designate, so they can send the scores they feel reflect their personal best.

The ScoreSelect option, available starting in July 2012, builds on the momentum that started with the 2011 launch of the test-taker friendly GRE revised General Test, which test takers worldwide responded to with great enthusiasm. “The ScoreSelect option focuses on helping test takers succeed on the road to an advanced degree because they can approach test day with more confidence,” says James Wimbush, Dean of the University Graduate School and Professor of Business Administration, Indiana University, and 2011–2012 GRE Board Chair.

“Adding enhancements, like the new ScoreSelect option, to our test-taker friendly platform helps people feel good about making a move toward graduate and business school, and that is what’s most exciting about this announcement,” says David Payne, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Higher Education Division at ETS. “Anytime we can make changes that improve test takers’ testing experience and confidence to succeed, we create more opportunity for all students.”

Test takers can now select from several options.

On test day, when viewing their scores at the test center*, they can select the:

  • ScoreSelect Most Recent option — Send their scores from their current test administration (FREE).
  • ScoreSelect All option — Send their scores from all administrations in the last 5 years (FREE).

Test takers can decide which option to use for each of their 4 FREE score reports.

After test day, test takers can send Additional Score Reports for a fee and select:

  • ScoreSelect Most Recent option — Send their scores from their most recent test administration.
  • ScoreSelect All option — Send their scores from all administrations in the last 5 years.
  • ScoreSelect Any option — Send their scores from one OR many test administrations in the last 5 years.

Scores for a test administration must be reported in their entirety.

“The ScoreSelect option for the GRE tests is an extension of ETS’s long-standing strong commitment to enabling ever more individuals, both minority and majority, to take the next step towards graduate or business school, giving them invaluable additional opportunities for their future,” says Michael Sullivan, Executive Director, STEM, Hispanic Research Center, Arizona State University.

The new ScoreSelect option will be available for both the GRE revised General Test and GRE Subject Tests, and can be used by anyone with reportable scores from the last five years. For more information on this new option and other GRE program offerings, including free test prep, visit www.ets.org/gre.

Every GRE test takers dream is to score high. Here is a 6 month Revised GRE study plan to score 320 and above.

Study plan was shared by Lavanya.

You can take this Revised GRE study plan, follow it step by step. Because she scored over 320, you can also get 320+ in Revised GRE.

Profile

I gaGRE Study Planve my GRE in the last week of Feb, and overall I am satisfied with my performance.

I did expect a different sectional split up, but the current score is pretty fine for me.

Given a chance, and if GRE was much cheaper, I might think of re-taking it.

But as it stands, no.

Also, I’d rather not post my actual score here, but it suffices to say that I’m pleased with it (320+).

I am planning for a Master’s in BioMed Sciences related field and I have been looking for courses that would align with my interests right now.

6 Months Revised GRE Study Plan

August 2011

  • Ask around seniors for what they did for GRE.
  • Did some research on new GRE and bought Official GRE Guide

Oct 2011

Nov 2011

  • Took a month off for my acads.

Dec 2011

  • Holidays – started practicing with increased vigour.
  • Math practice from websites online as well.
  • I practiced the HitList/High Frequency Words so that I’d know them properly.

Note – Check this out How to Memorize 1413 Words in 1 Week?

Jan 2012

  • I realized I was not ready for a test in Jan. So, I postponed my test to Feb.
  • Started crunching word lists from Barron’s. (6 Ways to Memorize Barrons GRE Words)
  • I had to manage words lists, math, and acads and tests without letting my attendance percentage at college slip down.
  • Took online tests in the weekends.

Feb 2012

  • More word lists.
  • Review of math concepts.
  • I panicked a week before my exam. And I had lovely friends who helped me calm down.
  • The fact that I had to play in a match/tournament 5 days before my GRE actually helped me improve my focus.

On the day of Revised GRE

  • Went ahead with my AWA.
  • Then got Quants-Verbal-Quants-Verbal-Quants.
  • And I was not the least bit nervous or tensed. Yay!

GRE Test Prep Tips:

  • It always helps to look at the AWA list at least for issue essays. It keeps your head prepared for the question and you can proceed unfazed.
  •  I read through the list starting 2 days before my exam.
  • Try to practice on different keyboards. It saves a lot of time correcting typos because your digits are accustomed to one particular type of keyboard.
  • Also. Tests online which help grade your essays are very useful. It’s a good way to practice around 5 AWA essays.

GRE Math Prep Tips

  • Unfortunately I got a lot of questions that involved heavy calculations.
  • I didn’t get the usual 10 minutes I generally have after completion. And the lack of time made me a bit panicky.
  • Got a majority of data interpretation with multiple options questions which was time consuming.

GRE Verbal Prep Tips

Honestly, this was my biggest surprise. I got like 6-7 more than what I expected.
And I think you can tackle if you *know* your (not you’re!) English.

If you mugged the word lists, it would have left you with cold feet. Because, contextually, they wouldn’t have fit.

I would say do the hit list/high frequency lists and casually browse through the other lists to familiarize with the words.

Don’t get worked up, as this new format tests ONLY how well you understand and comprehend English not your ability to know a huge bucketload of words.

What’s next:

I did send it to 4 schools, out of which 3 of them have a wonderful course.

The other one, is a good course, but obviously I have to put in more research time to find out similar courses and other universities and other factors.

I will hop off to an internship (research based) abroad. Which I hope will be a wonderful experience.

Bonus Tip:

The internship offers are not only for those in IIT/IISc levels.

It is definitely possible for other folks (like myself) to get, as long as you invest time and effort to create a strong case of why they should pick you.

Play your strengths. And a good CGPA will always help.

I will plan on TOEFL a good couple of months later. Besides, since most schools don’t give scholarships to Master’s students (in the US), I am taking TOEFL seriously.

And besides that, off to focusing on this semester’s acads now!

At the end of the day: Relax. Take the GRE in your stride. Have fun and good luck!

Students have big dreams about studying in USA. It starts with getting Good GRE Score or atleast Average New GRE Score.

What would happen if one cannot differentiate between Average and good GRE Scores?

Question – My New GRE Score

I have got New GRE Score but I’m not sure if  my New GRE Score is good or average score.

  • GRE Verbal Reasoning :
    • Scaled score – 132
    • %below – 1
  • GRE Quantitative reasoning:
    • Scaled score  – 147
    • %below -  40
  • Analytical writing:
    • Score – 1.5
    • %below -  1

Basically how is the New GRE score?

What kind of universities can I get?

New GRE – Good or Average

Hmm.. lets see if you GRE Score is Good or Average.

  • GRE Verbal – 132 out of 170
  • GRE Quantitative – 147 out of 170
  • Analytical Writing – 1.5 out of 6

I would say your Revised GRE score is neither Good or Average. Its bad.

I don’t know what to say about a student planning to attend graduate school in USA is unable to differentiate between bad, Average and Good GRE Scores.

If you have scores say 150 in Verbal and  150 quantitative sections, then having doubts about Good vs average GRE Scores is valid question.

When you have scores only 132 in Verbal and 1.5 in Analytical writing, you should know that your score is poor.

99% of the GRE test takers who took the test scores above your score in Verbal section and Analytical writing section.

Do your self a favor. Start preparing for GRE again.

Stop wasting time looking for universities for GRE Score 132, 147 and 1.5.

You need to work hard to improve your GRE Score.

ETS announced record breaking number of GRE Test takers in 2011.

Following several consecutive record-breaking years, the GRE program reported that 2011 total number of GRE Test takers reached an all-time high at more than 800,000 (13% increase over last year).

Why Increase in Number GRE Test Takers?

ETS officials believe the added momentum is due to the New GRE revised General Test combined with increase in acceptance of er of schools accepting GRE scores worldwide by thousands of graduate institutions, including business schools.

“We are excited to see such a sharp rise in interest in the GRE revised General Test because it ultimately leads to more people pursuing higher education. In addition, the growing use of GRE scores by business schools is great news for prospective students who now have more opportunities for success — applicants can take one test to pursue either graduate school or an MBA,”says David Payne, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ETS’s Higher Education Division.

In 2011, the GRE Program recorded growth in all major markets around the world. U.S. volumes increased nearly 10% from 2010, and ETS saw solid increases in important segments such as underrepresented groups, the variety of undergraduate degrees and individuals planning to pursue an MBA. Internationally, number of GRE test takers increased nearly 25% over 2010.

  • China – 28% increase
  • India – 43% increase

GRE and Business Schools

More schools than ever, including business schools around the world and international institutions, are accepting GRE scores for admission.

In 2011, the number of business schools accepting GRE scores for their MBA programs climbed to nearly 800, up dramatically from 450 in 2010.

International institutions accepting GRE scores also grew by nearly 10% in 2011.

“GRE test takers now have access to more institutions than ever before with substantial growth in acceptance by business and international schools,”adds Payne.

Leading schools who accept GRE scores for their MBA program reported to ETS that they are now seeing a growing applicant pool of GRE test takers. In addition, GRE score reports sent to international schools rose more than 17% in 2011 compared to the prior year.

2011 marked exceptional growth for the GRE Program, providing an even better test and a better testing experience, which is good news for potential students.

Xie Fang, a GRE test taker in Beijing, China comments, “The GRE revised test is more convenient and user friendly than the old GRE test. I can move back and forth in one section and flag questions, this is really helpful.”

Here’s the answer to yesterday’s practice question, thanks for sending in all of your answers!

Brand loyalty plays a(n) (i) _________ role in many consumers’ buying habits. Market research shows that consumers are likely to spend more on a product they grew up using than they are to try a generic brand that offers the same (ii) __________ at a lower price. The question is, just how much more are shoppers willing to spend for (iii) __________?

Blank (i) Blank (ii) Blank (ii)
A. speculative D. constituents G. nostalgia
B. quotidian E. accolades H. paranoia
C. appreciable F. idiosyncracies I. quality

(C) appreciable, (D) constituents, and (G) nostalgia are the credited responses.

The key terms are “loyalty”, “grew up using”, “generic”, and “how much more”.

Blank (i)

(C) appreciable means enough to be measured. Since the market research has undertaken quantitative analysis to determine the effect of brand loyalty on consumer buying habits, appreciable is the best fit for this context.

(A) speculative means not based on fact or, in some cases, risky. The second sentence claims that market research has demonstrated that brand loyalty factors into consumers’ buying habits, so speculative is an inappropriate choice.

(B) quotidian means mundane. If brand loyalty increases the sale of one product over another, is unlikely to be considered banal. Quotidian is not logical here.

Blank (ii)

(D) a constituent means a component or element. Generic products typically offer the same or similar components as their brand name counterparts; thus, constituent is a good match.

(E) an accolade is an award or honor. It is not likely that a generic brand will have achieved the same level of recognition as a brand name product.

(F) an idiosyncrasy is a peculiarity of character. This term does not make sense here because an idiosyncrasy is typically a human trait rather than that of an inanimate object.

Blank (iii)

(G) nostalgia is a longing for something of the past. This word relates to consumers’ brand loyalty to products from their youth and is the best fit for this sentence.

(H) paranoia is fear of persecution or danger. This word is inappropriate because the context does not suggest that consumers exhibit brand loyalty out of fear.

(I) quality is a good distractor here because brand names are often compared against generic ones based on questions of quality. It is not, however, the best fit because the preceding sentence suggests that consumers are loyal because of tradition or sentimentality.

Helpful Hints

Don’t skip over a seemingly straightforward component of the sentence simply because its language is less difficult. In this case, “a product they grew up using” is essential in solving for the final blank.

Question from a reader about Revised GRE Scores switched between Verbal and Math, between Scores after the test to GRE Score report.

So I took like 6 practice tests and got around 164 math and 153 verbal almost every time.

I get my temp scores and it is 165/158 so I am happy.

Then I get my report see the same and send it out.

Then I look closer and it has me as math 158 and verbal 165!!

There is just no way that is possible.

My vocab is terrible and I was a math minor. I never scored below a 163 for any math practice and never scored above a 152 verbal – ever! I called ETS and they say there is no way they are wrong and will not do anything about it.

Anyone else ever had this happen?

Funny thing is my total the way i think it should be would be on the old scale 1370 but the way they have me it is a 1430 on the old scale. So maybe i should just be happy but I am afraid the math intensity of my major would be an issue.

Any input?

Interchanged GRE Scores

  • You are Correct and ETS is Incorrect.
  • Your are Incorrect and ETS is Correct.

Unfortunately, GRE test takers don’t have screenshots to prove that.

If in case there is bug in the ETS GRE testing system or several others have reported the same problem, they could go back to check what happened.

Possible Solution for ETS

Right after test takers accept the GRE scores, printout with unofficial scores can handed-out to the test taker. Of course, it should have a note – “Unofficial Score” or something like that.

I have never seen anyone with similar problem before.

But, let’s see if other readers have had such issues with GRE Score reports.

GRE Exam Prep tips for Preparing for GRE Test – Shared by a Reader.

Quantitative Section of GRE

  1. Anything < 800 in quantitative portion of GRE should be unacceptable.
  2. Quants is the easiest section of the test, so do your best to ace it.
  3. Practice, practice, and practice – it does make perfect for this portion of the test.
  4. At times, the easiness of this section might lead to complacency – try to avoid losing points because of that.
GRE Prep Tips

Verbal Section of GRE

  1. Find a friend who is willing to help you learn the words in the word list by heart – this is immensely helpful.
  2. Test each other – ask each other meanings of the words, ask each other to use those words in a sentence.
  3. Don’t be afraid to learn the meanings of the words by rote if you have to.
  4. Understand the usage of the words – that helps a lot, for a single word can be used differently in a different context.

Writing Section of GRE

Prepare for the writing portion of your GRE as seriously, if not more, as you’d for the other two sections.

A score of 5+ is very gettable and shall stand one in good stead. It is not that difficult to achieve either.

Here are a few tips to help you improve your analytical writing:

Tip 1

  • Keep yourself up-to-date vis a vis the current affairs, and when i say current affairs i mean world affairs (social, economic, political, scientific, technological etc. etc.) and especially the issues that relate to the west, especially the US. Read newspapers, magazines, books and whatever else you can lay your hands on. The more you know about various issues, the better you will be at articulating your point in the essays that you write.

Tip 2

  •  Do not be reluctant to read articles etc. on esoteric topics either, e.g. … i dunno, ‘The mating habits of crickets in the lawns of The White House’ or ‘NFL teams’ nose tackles and linebackers join the fight against obesity’ or ‘The trade winds this summer are predicted to flow from west to east for atleast three weeks’! What i mean is, read anything and everything – even if you wouldn’t normally care a fig about a topic, read it, in fact, read it first.

Tip 3

  •  This will also you with your preparation for Verbal Section of GRE – you’ll develop your habit of reading stuff about boring subjects, and the more you read the faster you’ll be able to read as well as comprehend. Both these skills will be mighty helpful not just during the verbal section of your GRE but later on in your student and professional life as well. This shall also allow you to rack your word-list quite a bit and improve your understanding of how those words are used.

Tip 4

  •  Practice your writing as much as you can – write on topics that have appeared in GRE exams before. Get your write-ups evaluated from someone who’ll give you an honest assessment of your write-up and will also give you useful tips and suggestions for improving it. Here are a couple of quick ones: (i) always take notes before launching into a write-up – jot down what points you are going to mention and what examples you are going to use (ii) always have an opening paragraph and a closing paragraph, and a separate paragraph for each idea/point/analysis/critique you present.

Tip 5

  •  Try to have examples other than the ‘run of the mill’ ones. Avoid using such cliched examples as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Barack Obama, Mahatma Gandhi etc. To show that you are more thoughtful, well read and analytical, use examples which might be a little less common.

Tip 6

  •  Last but not the least – do not be afraid to have a strong opinion on the topic/subject that you have to write an essay on. Just be ready to support your opinion/assertion with examples. If your topic calls for it, make sure that you mention the pros and cons, the good and the bad, the right and the wrong, of an idea, situation, and philosophy etc. that your topic is about.

GRE Exam practice is the key, but sometimes sometimes Practice Test scores differ a lot from Actual GRE Exam.

GRE Test preparation and Score Performance Tracker – Shared by Karthik (Back in June).

improve gre score

I was part of the GRE boot camp as well as the personalized GRE study plan.

Thanks a ton to HSB for these wonderful initiatives. I have gained so much by being part of them. The study tips helped me a lot especially in the verbal section.

The GRE The score

I scored 1430 (V 770, Q 660, AWA 3.5). I prepared for 3 months. Started my prep in January (2011)  this year and wrote my exam in April.

This is sufficient time to prepare if you study systematically. I took a mock test and scored 620 in both quants and verbal. So the actual GRE score in terms of verbal was a huge surprise.

This is where the boot camp helped me. By devoting study time daily for verbal and revising wordlist I was through with Barrons one week befor my exam. It is important to track your progress and improve your weak areas. You could use a tracker similar to this ( not shared – due to contents that would violate copyright)

GRE Verbal Prep

The big book was a huge help especially for analogies and sentence completions.

I had taken all the 27 tests in the big book. My daily study schedule I used to read a wordlist and attend 1 test from big book.

At first I used to get most of the answers wrong. But over time I was able to get 75% of the answers right. By this method I completed barrons as well as big book simultaneously. This is more than sufficient for verbal prep.

I had tried few methods for remembering words as described in HSB posts.

The one thing that worked for me was forming sentences especially for tough words.

For ex I would remember the word ineluctable by using a sentence ‘An ineluctable fate’.

The word internecine by the sentence ‘An Internecine warfare’ I could go on but this is the general idea.

I tried identifying words by their roots but found it to be tricky for e.g. the root ‘phil’ means love but the word ‘Philatelist’ does not have anything to do with love.

So I didn’t favour this method much.

Another method I used is word groupings for e.g. under hate I would group abhor, detest, revulsion, antipathy, anathema etc.

If you don’t have time to do this you can refer to kaplan word groups in the last pages.

These 2 methods and regular revision of barrons helped me the most.

I read somewhere that ‘words are like relatives if you don’t visit them often you tend to forget them’ and I really struck to this principle.

GRE Quants Prep

I was getting decent scores in the Quants practice test but made big mistakes in my exam and it cost me a lot.

The problems from Nova were good but the big book problems are pretty old and I found them to bear little resemblance to the actual questions I got in the exam.

I made mistakes in the graph questions, probability and co-ordinate geometry.

Only tip I can give here is to practise taking tests and improve your time management and accuracy.

In the actual GRE exam it all boils down to nerves and if you are able to handle it well then Quants would be easy but unfortunately I lost my cool in this section.

AWA

Prepare a template with introduction and conclusion for both essay type and change it according to the topic.

You can also use standard phrases like “the author’s assumption is logically flawed” for the argument essay.

For both essays you need 4 paragraphs one for the introduction where you state your stand and 1 paragraph for conclusion where you reiterate your stand and 2 body paragraphs where you support with points and examples.

Make sure your essay is coherent.

Better strategy is to stick to one or two examples and develop them fully.

I was expecting above 4.0 but got only 3.5 don’t know where I went wrong.

Although the score is good, what worries me is the low Quants score.

All I can do now is keep my fingers crossed and hope to get into good schools. Hope my study tips help fellow test takers. All the best .
