University for Low GRE Score <1000 ( v350, q600)
January 18, 2008 by Author · 35 Comments
I was browsing universities for Masters program Construction Management, but I happened to find a decent school for Computer Science, Software Engineering, Quality Assurance, Electrical, Telecommunications engineering and Construction Management. If you have GRE score less than 1000 and looking for decent university to study, then Southern Polytechnic State University will be one of the good choice.
Computer Science Requirements:
- GRE : 350V + 600Q with higher scores considered to compensate for a lower GPA;
- GMAT has ALREADY been taken recently, official GMAT scores may be considered.
- Alternative for low GRE Score: A student holding a baccalaureate degree from an accredited school who does not meet the criteria for Basic or Advanced categories may be admitted upon convincing the faculty of the School of CSE of extraordinary alternative qualifications (e.g., lengthy and distinguished employment in the computer field) that would predict the likelihood of success in completing the MS program.
- TOEFL score of 213 or more.
Electrical Engineering Requirements:
- Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in Electrical, Computer, or Telecommunications Engineering Technology or Electrical, Computer, or Telecommunications Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Applicants must have at least a 2.70 (on the 4.00 scale) undergraduate grade point average.
- Applicants must score a minimum of 500 on either the quantitative or analytic components of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Construction Management Requirements:
- A score of 850 or better on the General Test (verbal and quantitative) of the GRE or score of 500 on the GMA

University of Alabama @ Birmingham ( Admission with Scholarship)
September 23, 2007 by Author · 3 Comments
School: University of Alabama at Birmingham
Major : Computer and Information Science
Degree: Masters ( 2002 To 2004 )
GRE 1810/2400
TOEFL : 250
Aid :
If you get an on campus job you are qualified for In-State Tuition fee and that is less than half the regular fees. Most of the students manage to get an on campus job. Cost of living is very low.Two bed room apartment between $450 and $600.
Also, I learned that, in Fall 2007 most of the students who applied go admission with some form of Scholarship, Assistantship. So, I advise the the readers to check it out UAB and talk to couple of seniors who are attending University of Alabama @ Birmingham.
Looks like a good school, since getting part time job will qualify you for In-state fees. Difference between In-state fee and Out of State fee can be found here.

Guest Speaker : UC Davis
I couldn’t finish the article about Shortlisting Universities for Graduate School admission. I’m still doing some research to get give you guys all possible information. I should be done by tomorrow. In mean time enjoy the guest post.
Hi guys.. I’m Vihya from Chennai who is heading to UC Davis this fall for my Masters in Computer Science.. I’m taking the Cathay Pacific and flying via Singapore and Honk Kong in the 1st week of September.. I’m allowed to carry 32 * 2 kgs and a carry on baggage of 7kgs. The ticket fare came to around Rs. 30,000 for a one way journey.. I’ll be staying in an apartment about a mile away from the campus with 3 other Indian girls. We’ve leased a 3bedroom/2bath apartment for a year paying a security deposit of $300 and the monthly rental is $1610.
Few pairs of jeans, t-shirts, some traditional clothes, sandals, a pressure pan and few utensils, Indian spices and masala powders, some sweets and snacks and not to forget my mom’s recipe book are the things I’m carrying along. While I was shopping, I found that both soft luggage and hard luggage weigh the same. The soft luggage is at the most a kg lighter than the hard one. I’m under the impression that a hard one will have a longer life, so I got one from VIP which cost Rs.3000 and the other from Samsonite. Each suitcase weighs 5kgs. Well, so this is how I’ve been getting ready.
University Ranking and Department Ranking
September 9, 2007 by Author · 23 Comments
I have Happy Schools for about 45 days days and I’m happy to see the blog grow in popularity from such valuable comments. I had some emails asking me about University Ranking and also department ranking wise ranking list. In one of the previous post U.S. News Ranking. Its a Joke
I had strongly discouraged not to follow its Ranking. My ultimate aim is to convey the message ‘Ranking Doesn’t have any significance’. It’s a mere number to classify the Universities. Having said, that next question you guys will have is how are we supposed to select the Universities from my score when so many Graduate School is offering Masters program in my area. Continue reading, I will explain with examples.
If you look at the Ranking list in general and see what criteria is used for Ranking the University, there is no option given for Aid given to Students, What GRE and TOEFL scores are accepted, how many students get part time jobs.
And we are planning to short list universities, we ask only questions like,
1) For my GRE and TOEFL score which Graduate School will give me admission and we will short list under 3 categories: Ambitious, Normal, Safe.
2) If I don’t get Research or Teaching Assistantship, Students Scholarship, can I find at least part time jobs within college campus. So, I can manage my living expenses and pay the fees using Credit Cards.
Now, let me ask you this. How do you think, a Ranking list that doesn’t include any of the above 2 queries for classifying Universities will help you?
Answer is simple. It doesn’t help you.
Answer is: We are looking for List of Universities and list of College Departments( Computer Science and Engineering , Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, ..) and that list must include above 2 factors. Something like..
I have GRE of 1200, TOEFL 90, Academics 75% and you need a list arranged based on accepting students for your credentials.
Suppose, if such list exists, how will it be used by students.. I will give example for that too. I will construct an sample list ( dosen’t have any real value)
1) Stanford University ( GRE : 1500 and above)
2) MIT
3) Harvard University
4) ….
5)….
25) Virginia Tech ( GRE : 1250 and Above)
26) Georgia Tech
27)…..
28) …
50) UTA ( GRE : 1100 and Above)
51) UTD
52) KSU
…..
98) TAMK
99) UNTD
100.)…List goes
If you have such a list student with GRE of 1200 will short list like this
Ambitious:
Virgina Tech
Georgia Tech
Normal:
UTA
UTD
UCF
Safe:
FIT
UNCC
NJIT
TAMUK
More to it, we need to have list that includes to have availability of Part Time jobs and Aid. Its a tough ask for someone to create such a list with all combinations. I looked at the list provided by i20fever, but you can use it if you list of all the Universities you need from U.S.. But is that ultimate guide for all your queries, I don’t think so.

<!–adsense#SmallRect–>
Now,it all boils down to 1 question. How to short list when there are so many Universities. I’ will show how to do it. I’m afraid, it involves some effort, but certainly you will be rewarded. If you guys wonder, how can I write like this. Because I followed the steps I have talked about and going to talk in in next post about short listing your dream 5-8 Universities.

I was out for about 10 days on vacation to Alaska Wilderness with limited access to Internet, cell phone. So, couldn’t post everyday. I got my rest after the long trip and back here with posts. I will write my trip report from Alaska with photos in coming posts. I had email from from few asking questions about University Transfer process and few questions like
- How long would it take to transfer between universities for International Student?
- What is the university transfer process for International Students?
- How many course credits can be transferred?
- Do we need to fill out any special application?
- How to apply for admission while transferring?
- What additional requirements are needs for International Student Transfer?
- When can I get transfer?
Let me address above questions one by one.
1) How long would it take to transfer between universities for International Student?
It doesn’t take long. After you get admit from the university, it would take less than 1 week ( max ) for the entire transfer process. Some schools it might just take few hours. Continue reading about the process involved.
2) What is the university transfer process for International Students?
Step 1: Apply for admission to different Universities
Step 2: University issues Official Admission Letter. Take that letter to your current school International Office and apply for transfer. You will be typically asked to fill out a form and submit a copy of your admission letter.
Step 3: After transfer is approved in your current school, they will do SEVIS transfer to your new school and send confirmation by mail or fax to new University International Student Office.
Step 4: After the new University gets the SEVIS Transfer confirmation, they will issue you new I-20.
3) How many course credits can be transferred?
This depends on the school. So, school will allow upto 9 credits above grades B can be transferred. Talk to you school IO Adviser to find about he credits transfer policy.
