- I’m not a fan of University Rankings of Any Sort.
- University Match Maker would be best fit.
- University vs Program vs Your Interests vs Your Profile.
Having said that, something is better than nothing.
We have some way to rationalize our thinking for personal satisfaction about choices we make based on some external factors that we don’t control.
I would love to see Times publish Rankings just based on Data from Students (not from academic surveys).
Having said that, I have to agree to the following statement
“Reputation is subjective, nebulous and difficult to pin down–but it really matters,” says Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education Rankings. “It both reflects success and also drives success.” (Forbes)
Times Reputation Ranking Methodology
In just two cycles of the invitation-only survey, almost 31,000 individual academics from 149 countries have engaged with the exercise – providing a rich insight into the reputations of institutions around the world. This year’s table of the top universities by reputation is based on a record sample of 17,554 detailed responses, up 31 per cent on last year.

Hey guyz, i m pursuing engg frm pune uni, i m very much interested in prac’s nd reasearch work, but d syllabus is just theory nd assignment based, i feel lack of time 2 complete any project work on my own.. My frnds frm another uni like mumbai, chennai also feels d same, IIT somewhat improved atleast they give a chance, this is d main things lacking frm our education system.
It is really very bad thing which show our education system actually we can not ignore the invention of Europen scientist&enginrres and their innovation in early history of science and further application of these fundamentals science concept become engineering hence i think this list is correct according past futures ……
WHAT IS GOOD FOR MY CARREER MBA OR MS IN UK IF IAM DOING CIVIL ENGINEERING
@Uday: I read this post on HSB, so logically I am at right place where I have freedom to express my views and there was nothing offensive regardless of what you think. Am happy with India has and atleast am respect my country and standing up for it.
I did not see you mention UBC – Univ of British Columbia or University of Alberta.
Canada has few world ranking universities for your information.
Canada alone has a minimum of 3 universities in world ranking list.
The day Indian Institutes are able to stop the brain drain to US universities, we shall have the top ranked universities in the world! We will indeed give the Americans a run for their money. And what I say is not foolish optimism. Some of the IITS, both new and old, are hell bent on changing their reputation to establish top class research environment. They are aggressively pitching and trying to get good research oriented faculty, pushing for certain reforms regarding structure and control of the IITs with the government. However, these things don’t happen instantly and the change takes some time to come. Perhaps, 10 – 15 years down the line we may see Indian institutes come on par with world class institutes.
I think the ranking was of Universities not Brain Bank. Rankings are done on different parameteres where Indian Universities are far behind.
Well said Rachit! What you said is 100% true… Here our friend is forgetting that students and their success after the completion of course from the schools are essential factors to keep the universities in top list…. Rankings will not be given only in terms of faculty or in terms of geographical representation……
Remove IIT and IIT JEE and see the change. It is the most useless demotivating stressful entrance exam ever administered. World’s top ranking universities are easier to get into compared with IIT. Even if somebody is an IIT graduate, they may not go far in their career. That is the reality guys because IIT is in India
Rachit forget about that…just putting money and reform doesn’t create world class institute…its a complex mixture of how is the condition of your society, people, there perception, democracy, military power, leadership and many others .those even we don’t know. There are many countries who spend los of money in research ..for example South Korea, Singapore…but no output. and by he way IIT is merely a Engg training school whose students are intelligent ( well !! in relative Indian sense: ability to do tough Integral calculus problem does not make anybody smart: at least in western sense: you have to think out of box, invent new thing: that makes people smart) …no research , no innovation, no discovery happen here. Noby care IIT in USA except som,e hedge fund companies or some tech companies in California.
Unless you improve your basic research scenario, nothing will change.
Stop fighting guys….
I have a close friend at IIT-B….i’ve been there a couple of times and lived their life for a few days….Believe me…its nowhere near anything u’ve ever imagined …
untill you get there, you wont know why it’s so prestigious.
And btw, IIT-D is 40th in world for Mechanical Engg.
and IIT-B is also among top 50.
IIT-Madras lies somewhere near 100..
and DU in top 150 and MU in top 200
for mechanical.
What is the Current of National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu Taiwan ???
OOps Sorry Current** Rank Of ** National Tsing Hua University
HSB ,
Very good post.
But I have read in many of your other posts where you have mentioned that University really doesn’t matter , its all about our skills.
Could you please explain?
Guys, before you judge anything,U must go for the root.U must know how they give point for this ranking. I wont be wonder if I see none of indian institute is between 100-200 also.We are talking about university not the student.Definitely,IIT student would be in the front line when it comes in terms of comparison amongst the student’s quality.I would appreciate whatever Uday mentioned before.Besides, did U guys ever met any tokyo or kyoto university student?Believe me they are not better than us even in some cases I’d rather say we are better than them bcoz Mathematics is the mother of all science N we are quite good at that,I’d rather say better than any place of the world And do U know guys how some japaneese got their undergraduate degree?I was so surprised to see one of my Japaneese colleague take bachelor degree in architecture in only 2.5yrs even though previously he didn’t take any diploma.University ranking cant justify the student solely but to some extent of course it’s the parameter which would comes 1st when U wanna justify some one U dont know in person.
I don’t get it why is it so hard to digest that Indian universities aren’t in the list.
1) IITs are purely technical institutes and IIMs are purely managerial. But most of the universities in this list are super-multi-disciplinarian. They are better because they are simply bigger – in size. in courses, in students, in infrastructure, in exposure and every other factor.
2) Do Indian Universities get as many endowments as their counterparts ? No. How come you expect good research quality results without enough money ?
But do remember that this is a ranking of the universities and not necessarily the students studying in these universities. IITs and IIM’s may definitely be better on that front.
Uday – looks like you comment around this time daily 6am
well this is for everyone who thinks India is quite forward in science and technology
just name one Indian citizen who has won nobel prize in science
IITs are good no doubt but their real strength is their students, they are not really a research Institute.
why else do you think the top of the cream students leave IIT to pursue postgraduation in US or UK
agree
there are 2 physicists .
1) C.V. Raman
2) Subramanium Chandrashekhar
3) some subramanium for chennai, college of applied physics.
dont remember his name..u can google.
Dear Saad,
The fact why most of us rushing to US schools are to settle there and one more factor is Dollars…. Yes I know we hardly agree on this fact but the reason why we are running to US is just to make money my dear friend… And that’s the reason 90% of us search mostly for VISA interviews/experiences etc in this blog….
HAPPY SCHOOLS BLOG is just about USA, I think you are PR agency for USA. What about IIT’s and IIM’a, don’t they stand anywhere!!!! Strange…..and why would NY time, Forbes and BBC show stats of Indian Institutes – IF YOU CAN’T SAY GOOD ABOUT INDIA atleast DON’T degrade it which HSB has tried many times. The country from where most of your income comes from because we Indians only visit HSB and not anyone else in the world!!!!
I’m saying what in the rankings. I’m saying what the facts and numbers are saying. I would love to see IIT and IIM in top rankings. If experts and surveys don’t rank, then I’m the one to get the heat?
Are you out of your mind Manish Soni ? IITs and IIMs actually don’t stand a chance against these universities. But why are you ranting against HSB for this. He’s not acting like a PR, rather like a reporter. If you need justification why IIT’s/IIM’s are not in the list then logically you should contact the places you listed NY Times/Forbes/BBC and THE.
P.S. Read the disclaimer
@Uday, I am wondering if you are in your senses.
Nobel laureates from India
Rabindranath Tagore
C. V. Raman
Amartya Sen and there are few more to name.
People go to USA just to make money and so would I, if needed and what makes you say that IIT and IIM don’t stand a chance?????? as if you are a graduate from one of the best universities in world…..
Peace
Hi Manish, University rankings are assessed based on all the departments like MBA, Medical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Language courses, literature, and everything that forms education. So we cannot expect IITs and IIMs to stand anywhere in the top world rankings just because IITs do not offer medial courses and IIms do not offer Engg. or medical which are important areas to assess a university.
I wonder how they ranked universities, Since Carnegie Mellon University is in 37th position which is one one the most prestigious university in the world. Actually It should be after Stanford.
And while coming to our Indian Universities the rankings is really worth.
None of Indian Universities in top 20
why am I not surprised at all
