  1. my qulification is diploma in electronics engineering and ccvp, ccnp, ccna certifications can i take h1b visa

  2. Apart from the field of computers, are there no other fields that would show a high demand in skill and supply? maybe like civil or environmental engineering?

    • environmental job market is very bad. computer industry is full of third party desi vendors and they know the process of H-1B visa. In environmental engineering job interviews, you will face situations like employers have never heard the name of H-1B visa? construction engineering may have some demand but avoid environmental engineering at any cost.

      • Could you cite a source for this or is it from your personal experience? B’coz CNN news as well as the US Dept. of Labor Statistics rates environmental engineering as a booming sector in the coming 5 years atleast, as there is a major shortage in skilled people. So, its really confusing at this point. And when you say environmental job market, does it include environmental scientists (envt. managers, conservationists, consultants, law, audit, etc.) as well ??

        • personal experience-the companies clearly say that they do not entertain applications from any person which require any sort of visa/H-1B etc. go for environmental only if you are US citizen or green card. environmental scientists, eco risk assessors, consultants work with EPA, Department of energy and various government organisations a lot and since 9/11, federal/state department do not employ foreigners and as they give contracts to companies like URS, CH2M Hill, they ask companies also not to send any foreigner employee to the work sites. as a result environmental companies do not employ foreigners. The statistics apply to US citizens, not to indians. only statistics that apply to indian student is some desi IT consultancy filing H-1B for you.

        • Just wondering if you are in Environmental Engineering field? Reason being few Env Engineers I know didn’t have any trouble find jobs and H1B.

        • Hi HSB, Yes I have Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering TAMU-CS. Post 2007 it is very difficult to get job/H-1B in this field.

        • @ Munna Thanks for the insight. was just curious to know if you are still working in the environmental field? I am searching for an environmental related course for my brother in the US/ Australia, he has completed masters in environmental science from an Indian college, but his career is heading in no direction at the moment. As his interests lies in this field, I asked him to pursue a degree abroad and apply for a job or look out for associates there.
@HSB & Munna So is this advisable in the first place?

        • and this was pre or post 2007 ?

        • I would say Environmental Engineering field is not advisable for doing MS in USA if his goal is to find job/stay in USA. Me and most of my friends-seniors/juniors are still struggling to find proper jobs in environmental field. I am talking about those students who went to USA after 2005 etc. job market is very bad for international students in environ. field for last 5-6 years. A close friend of mine after doing Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering is working as a volunteer(free) on OPT to maintain status as he is unable to find any job or post doc. my advice-avoid environmental studies in USA.

        • My boyfriend has an environmental engineering degree from a foreign university. He is currently on an F1 visa, but wants to stay here in the US and eventually get a job here. What do you suggest for his next steps? Do you advise he get an MS in the field? His country will give him a working visa only if his job title matches environmental engineering. PLEASE HELP!
