    hi,

this ques is to Mr. Abhijeet Singh and other friends here..I was planning to take a date between 24th Nov to 3rd December and TOEFEL as well. I will apply for phd in molecular biology or microbiology. can u kindly tell me which imp deadliness i might miss? can i apply just after answering GRE n TOEFEL also or will i have to wait for the official n complete score?

    • You have to check for deadlines with individual universities. In my case for example, UNC – Chapel hill is 15 nov while UIUC is on 22 nov. Just try to get in touch with students there to find out more. It all depends on your choice universities. All the best.

  10. Hello dears

please help me about studying in the USA.How can I study pharmacy in USA and which universities have this subject?

  11. Utkarsh Shrivastava September 22, 2010 at 6:59 PM

Any particular reason of following Washington Monthly over US news rankings (which is considered as a standard way of ranking even in US)?
I am assuming its definitely not engineering. I hope you *consider* university sources as legitimate.
Some facts about Gatech by the way: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/about/facts

  12. hello everyone!! i have finished my B.E. I am planning to do MS in TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT. I have decided to do the course in USA.
Can you tell me what are the kind of jobs i might get if i take up this course? also is it worth doing this course in the US?
    please suggest!!

  13. Hi HSB,

I have been a follower of ur blog for sometime now but this ranking list is a real shocker not that its wrong but it deviates from the usual norm ie MIT , Stanford , Harward n Georgia n UMCP is way below its usual ranking( around 13th) I personally don’t want to comment on this ranking coz I am not in the position to do so…… but anyway people who follow ranking want to just give some advice do not go by the ranking coz I know ppl who went to virtually unknown Unis and are now working for Microsoft and other big companies .
On the contrary ppl who went to top line Unis failed and changed Unis , so it is really upto the individual to make the most of what opportunities you have coz personally the education offered by most of the unis in USA is virtually the same and is of the highest quality all the profs will have phds so when it comes to pure learning it doesn’t matter which Uni you go to its all the same.

But where it matters is on campus jobs , if you go to a bigger Uni there will be lot of on campus jobs so you will end up getting a job for sure. Finally just choose Uni which offers your course of interest and if there are profs working on the technology which you are interested in then just go for it don’t believe in ranking too much , we cannot know for sure what happens internally coz ultimately ppl who give out rankings have to make money and how influenced they will be you cannot say , so don’t break your heads about ranking just do your homework and apply you should be fine . I would like to know what you feel about this HSB.

    Regards,
    Vinay

    • I agree to you 100% One of the reasons why there is such heated discussion is students in India think Ranking is everything. Higher ranking means things are settled for them. But, people in this thread have no clue that rankings doesn't take them anywhere. If Gtech ranked 63 doesn't mean everyone who applies will get admit. They have their standards and requirements. Based on Ranking methodology used by Washington Monthly above list was created.

      • Glad you could agree with me HSB coz I saw lot of ppl asking you for ranking and lot of ppl arguing with you about this list but what ppl have to understand is even before applying to MS program the reason why they want to do MS in the first place.

Once you know in what field n technology you want to be in I think 70% of their job is done rest will just follow .

    • I am the student at MIT, I don't know how can the people say that ranking does not matter !! This is just funny thing. The reality is , it work in many ways. Rather than getting a good job or research chances, You get into touch with World's finest people in such institutes, I don't mean that you cant find them in lower ranked one !! I would simply say, MIT will have quite more talented people , research projects, and many more which you may not get in lower ranking university.

I have said before too, I don't have any problem with this ranking, But I personally don't agree with this !! There is no question of being sheep ! I hope Mr HSB would create a quite broad way of accepting things rather than saying unusual !

Finally I have not use any words which may hurt, but In case it did I apologize for that. But I am not ready to agree this ranking. Even i would advised people to follow US news ranking.

      Sarthak

  14. i have got a gre score of 1490, gpa of 85%, no papers presented, one research programme in Singapore univ, am the president of a community Rotract club, could you give me a list of 10 most likely univs i will get admission with aid for ms in bme? am planning to present a couple of papers.

    • hai SENIOR,dis s sandhyaa me doing my prefinal …….N started preparg 4 gre last week……..n luckily i ve seen the comment posted by you,,where u ve mentioned dat ur score ws 1490………………. i ws flatted on seeing ur score,….pls need ur help n suggestion kindly pls sent ur id pls ………vg many ques to as u,, SENIOR…pls suggest me what i ve to do to score good marKS

      awaiting for ur rply,
      cheers,
      sandy…..

  15. what are the basis of these rankings?

  16. May I know how these rankings were formulated and who formulated them? Was it HSB or is this obtained from an external source or just an eclectic list?

  17. Cant feel anything but confused with your ranking. At least for me research is the most important aspect and for that US ranking is way more believable. I have myself gone through the first 30 universities in that list and have found the gradual decrease in the research standards. Your rankings appear skewed. Maybe the factors you took into account resulted in it. But still…..

  18. sir,

can u please paste a list of colleges based on similar parameters of CANADA?

  19. Well Guys,

I am completely disagree with the ranking stated here. Its not acceptable too as u might have guessed from the ranking. I would advise to follow only US news ranking, where Georgia Tech is 4th , MIT is 1 and Caltech is 2. However these rank is not more deflected for all courses considered. But 4 to 64 is not at all sounds correct. So I will not consider it as a true ranking, may be this is something personal openion.

    • i completely agree with you Sarthak. there may be a hair line difference in the performance of a college but otherwise there is no doubt that following US News or Times ranking is a safe deal for every student.

    • Do you know the factors considered in US News?

      • You can find it on US news ranking site. But I would still consider US news ranking as standard ranking !!!

Its something like this, I says switzerland is best place in earth and Mr Bachhan says this, then people have more impact of Mr Bachhan not me !!! Similarly HSB or serviour will be surely enough fine, but i personally still believe US News ranking. And some institutes like Purdue univ, or Georgia Tech, look funny to see this.

        • What factors do you consider while applying/selecting universities?

        • Ranking , Research opp. , and third thing is … I aim to join NASA, So i look which university got projects from NASA. These are the factors I look when i apply.

        • Sounds good. Now you have listed what is important to you when selecting and applying for universities. Now, I want you to find the US News Ranking factors and post it here.

        • I have first thing mentioned in my factors is ranking !!! That is US news ranking !!! US news ranking has all factors considered which should be considered in a engineering or any course school !!

World believe in their ranking system !! And beside this, I disagree with your ranking to Purdue Uni and many with the current considered factor !

        • You mean to say you don't know the factors used in the ranking, but you trust them because worlds believes in them. Perfect. That explains it all. I said in one of the post – Don't be a sheep. think for yourself.

7 Reasons why Rankings are worthless

        • I don't need to put the factors here, you can see them in the FAQ section.

Some time being ship is better than being a rat !! Think you self why !!!

(Your policy of nonacceptance the fact really made a bad impression today). I stop my conversation here. May be you can fool the new people but everyone here knows which had better deserving in ranking Georgia Tech or Univ of California, SD.

        • What fascinates me is that article clearly (above) says the methodology and who provided the rankings. I don't care Gtech or SD is ranked where in US News or WM. If you want to argue about this methodology and why Gtech is is 60+, you have to take it up with Washington Monthly.
FYI – None of the factors you sated that is important while selecting universities is considered in US News Rankings.

  20. Hi,

I am a final year B.tech (Computer Science) Student. and looking forward for fall 2011 intake ( for MS in Computer or IT) .Now i am preparing for GRE( Just Started). But i am confused, which is suitable month for giving GRE exam.
i have choices of November end and January starting (December is of 7th semester Exam).I am also worried about Universities deadlines.

    Any advice will be helpful.

    -Ajay

    • dude
don't get worried. u got ample time. i would suggest first make sure in what session you want to apply. if u don't happen to know then in the US admissions are in spring (starts Jan), summer and fall sessions (Aug-Sept). pls note: not all the univ are available in spring/summer. being from CSE myself, i would suggest concentrate for fall semester, also increases chances of fellowships. dont let ur univ exam take a back seat. preferably take gre exam before the new pattern hits (ie, Aug 01 2011). plan ur schedule likewise.
      good luck

    • Buddy try to give your GRE by november-mid so that your scores are available by November end. Else you will miss deadlines for universities and financial aids for fall 2011. Trust me there is hell lot of procedures involved in getting your documents and other stuffs in order. I got over with my GRE in August end and am still busy getting everything in order.

    • HAI SENior,me dng my pre final
PLS SAY me how ur preparing 4 gre????????

      awaiting for ur reply
      cheers,
      sandy
