As a current student who has spent a lot of time in the journalism world and taken many journalism classes, here is my advice on a journalism major. If you want to be a journalist, be a journalism major, but also major in something else.

Having knowledge about things such as the arts and sciences are important as they make you well rounded and give you the ability to speak on a lot of topics at length.

Also, internships are really important, which journalism school advisors are usually really good with. Many popular papers in the US come to the top colleges to find people to come work at their papers.

Some of my friends in the journalism program at UNC now work at places like the Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.

One last piece of advice, try not to pursue a journalism major unless your are almost absolutely sure of it. It is a lot of work, but it also leads to a lot of great rewards.
