Transfer : International Student to different Universitiy

September 3, 2007 by Author

I was out for about 10 days on vacation to Alaska Wilderness with limited access to Internet, cell phone. So, couldn’t post everyday. I got my rest after the long trip and back here with posts. I will write my trip report from Alaska with photos in coming posts. I had email from from few asking questions about University Transfer process and few questions like

1) How long would it take to transfer between universities for International Student?

2) What is the university transfer process for International Students?

3) How many course credits can be transferred?

4) Do we need to fill out any special application?

5) How to apply for admission while transferring?

6) What additional requirements are needs for International Student Transfer?

7) When can I get transfer?

Let me address above questions one by one.

1) How long would it take to transfer between universities for International Student?

It doesn’t take long. After you get admit from the university, it would take less than 1 week ( max ) for the entire transfer process. Some schools it might just take few hours. Continue reading about the process involved.

2) What is the university transfer process for International Students?

Step 1: Apply for admission to different Universities

Step 2: University issues Official Admission Letter. Take that letter to your current school International Office and apply for transfer. You will be typically asked to fill out a form and submit a copy of your admission letter.

Step 3: After transfer is approved in your current school, they will do SEVIS transfer to your new school and send confirmation by mail or fax to new University International Student Office.

Step 4: After the new University gets the SEVIS Transfer confirmation, they will issue you new I-20.

3) How many course credits can be transferred?

This depends on the school. So, school will allow upto 9 credits above grades B can be transferred. Talk to you school IO Advisor to find about he credits transfer policy.

4) Do we need to fill out any special application?

Applying to as International student transfer is same as Application process when you applied for the first time. During the application process you will fill out additional information like, your current school, GPA, courses completed.

Since you are already here in U.S. you can apply even after the deadline. They will be flexible with the deadline. Some schools might ask you to pay additional fee to process late application.

5) How to apply for admission while transferring?

See Question 4 for answer.

Also, its always good to contact the Graduate Advisor of the Department yo are apply and talk to him before the application or during the application process. That might increase you chances of getting admission. Personal touch always adds value.

6) What additional requirements are needs for International Student Transfer?

Some schools would require you to write additional Statement of Purpose explaining why you are requisition transfer. Some typical case include

* Not satisfied with course quality
* No Part time jobs or RA/TA is available
* Less job/internship scope after graduation
* Personal problems in the school environment

Universities are considerate in the transfer process, if you give genuine reason to transfer, they will consider you application. Suppose, you have very less GPA from current school due to personal problems or health reasons or if you don’t like to study in particular environment that made you perform less than you capacity, and if you state that reason, and if you had good Undergraduate records and GRE, they will be happy to give you admission.

7) When can I get transfer?

Usually, you can get transfer only after 1 semester of courses in the school you got visa for. but, I have heard 1 student say he got transfer in the first semester itself. But I haven’t verified that information yet. If I get any updates on that I will update this section in future.
