Admission + Aid + Job For GRE Score 830
September 10, 2008 by Raghu
I saw an interesting comment to one of the articles here in Happy Schools Blog.
I had secure GRE score 830 (550-quant, 280-verbal). 60 % Academic. Suggest some good major’s for MS which would fetch good jobs after completion and also good universities who provide RA/TA/scholarships, part time jobs.
I wasn’t really sure how to respond to the comment. There are so many aspects about the comment, I wish to highlight, but I will try not to be too harsh with my answer.
GRE Score 830
Comment doesn’t say about which department or major. So, I assume if it was for engineering major, there are universities where no GRE score is required. But, I have a question - Is it worth studying in such schools? No, I don’t think so.
Student Visa for GRE Score 830 and 60% Academics
Even if someone manages to get admission for GRE Score of 830, Visa office is going to ask you so many questions to justify if you will be able to complete the studies here, since standards are much higher. So, it will be really hard to get student visa for an engineering degree major for very low GRE Score.
Good Major’s for Masters Program
I’m bit puzzled here. If someone have completed Bachelors in Computer Science, then will try to do Masters degree in Computer Science, but I’m not sure if someone will be willing to study any major, just for the sake of getting a job.
Universities with Scholarship
I really doubt there is a university that will give admission with scholarship for GRE Score 830. Universities that have funding are the schools that have good research facility and they would require more GRE Score. So, for GRE Score of 830, universities might not have very good research options, which means, there will be less financial aid opportunities.

Thank for the comment,
I was looking for chemical engg majors, with the gre score 830, tofel 82,acad 60%.
I was actually looking for clarity on any university providing admissions and the prospects after completion from those universities, and experiences of old students if any.
@pranava priya: My suggestions would be to retake GRE and any score above 1100 will get admission, but for admission with scholarship, you will need to score above 1250.

i am looking for MS in Electrical Engineering.
Could u suggest me some universities or any piece of advice
@varun: GRE score of 800 and for M.S. in Electrical Engineering, don’t even think about applying. Retake GRE and its better to have more than 1100 to get into good school and visa will not be issue. For score less than 1000, its all luck - admission and visa. you can get admission for score 900 to 1000, but visa will be difficult. do you want to take risk?
