Hello,

I have completed M.A History in June 2009 from Mumbai University. I wish to do M.S in Peace, Conflict Resolution and Analysis in Fall 2011. My IELTS score is 8 on 9. I would be giving GRE in Nov 2010.Can anyone suggest a good university offering this course including assistantship or finance support. George Mason university seems to be good, however it seems to be expensive. – Thanks

Hello,
I am in the final yr of engineering (computer science branch). My academics are quite good i.e. CGPA 8.43 out of 10… I am in a dilemma whether to write gate exam or try gor gre i.e. to go for M.tech or M.S??? And my second doubt is whether to go for higher studies soon after my engineering or after having some work experience??? If work experience matters then how many yrs of experience would be good???

Reply

29 Ved August 13, 2010 at 10:49 PM

It is a good idea to gain work experience. Limit it to a year. Gaining just some work experience is not going to help. Relevance is important. Also important is to determine and define your career goal and specialization. Selecting your universities is important for your specialization-specific needs and it is not going to be easy. There is no need to fix more than 5 or 6 universities otherwise you are throwing your father’s hard earned money. Want advice? Email me. Good luck

30 amey August 14, 2010 at 1:18 AM

I agree with Ved.
I am of the opinion that if you have taken your undergraduate studies seriously and done substantial research in your academic life then You should have no problem in getting funding from good University.
I am totally against the students who despite of low academic performance and Integrity wish to pursue MS in US on parents money. There is no point spending lacks of rupees going to some lower ranked university just because you want to do MS.
If a student is academically good , has done graduation from good Universities like IITs/NITs he/she would definitely get into good University in US with sufficient funding.
Doesn’t make any sense in taking loans of huge amount. If you want to study abroad, don’t burden you parents.US has always been generous in funding to academically good students.

Reply

31 amey August 14, 2010 at 1:29 AM

Hello Neeta,
I am final year undergrad student in IIT.
I would say with a pinch of salt, that IITs are meant to be academically far superior for undergrad studies.
But Post graduation from IIT is not supposed to be that good as comparable to MS from good ranked US university.
Definitely It is difficult to get into IIT even for M.Tech level.
IIT does provide you with a stipend of 8000 pm.
Also since you are from CS, I can say if you make to IIT Bombay, you can definitely get a very good package(> 6 LPA).
So my advice would be
1) If you wish to pursue M.tech, don’t opt for job after your graduation.Start preparing for GATE right now.
2)If you are willing to do MS, do a job in your field of interest related to CS, gain some experience (say 2 years) and then apply for MS.By doing this your profile will get higher preference during admission process of US uni, and if you are good enough, might get funding as well.

planning to write your GRE in Jan 2011…!
So u might be eligible for Summer 2011 or Fall 2011…
Semester in universities of USA starts thrice.
You can apply for any.

Summer –> June
Fall –> August
Spring –> January / Feb

Most of the universities do not offer Summer…
Almost every university does offer courses for Fall or Spring.
You should be able to apply for a university at least 4months (can be varied) before the course starts. (Depending on the university dead lines..varies from univ to univ)

I hope this might helps you.

I will complete dual degree in June 2011.I am willing to apply for PhD in fall 2011.
I have spent my spring 2010 semester at Purdue University under Student Exchange program and scored GPA 0f 3.86/4 at Purdue.
I will probably get my paper published in coming 3 months.
I am confused between top universities on west coast like UCB, UCLA, Stanford and top universities in eastern part of US like Georgia tech, UIUC,Purdue.
As per my knowledge, the amount a PhD student gets for RA ship is nearly same whether it is UCB or UIUC.
I am currently ranked 2nd in my department.
Considering all factors like cost of living, quality of education, prospects after PhD, which universities would be best for me?
I don’t want to apply for MIT as outcome would be negative.
Also funding is very crucial for me as my father is retired and I can’t afford to pay tuition fees if I don’t get funding.

why dont you try for university of michigan ann arbour or university of southern california since usc is a private school and chances of funding you increases.
both are highly valued research universities but u can consider umich when mech is concerened as its a top school for all mech related depts.

To be frank I can afford only Flight and Visa charges which will be around 50k, I guess.
Can you suggest me any other school where I can get funding?? Please also comment on Purdue. As I have lived in Purdue campus, I have fair idea about it.Still I welcome your views.

hi friends
I would like to know some details for my sister who is planning to do MS in US .
She applied for 2 universities and she got her I-20 for those universities.
She had her BTECH accademic 63.4% , she failed in 1st year 2 semister and later she cleared it and now after getting I-20 for universities she got failed in 4th-2 semister .
She was told by her college examination branch mam that there will chance of eliminating 2 subjects which got least marks or failed, but our doubt is any problem in US university if they see the 4th year 2 semister marks memo as failed in 1 subject and with zero cerdit in 4th year 2 semister. Will the university accept her admission and allow to study in the college without any problem.
Please give reply to me soon , my sister is trying to go for visa dates and this is the peak moment please give me the reply soon.

Thanking you friends

Hi HSB,
Greetings! i was just wondering if u could provide more such details on UK education too. I loved the way u guys deal with every minor and major issue. It just seems so simple after reading ur blogs. But unfortunately I am directed towards UK and not US and i would be extremely grateful if u could throw more light on UK visa formalities. I’ve heard they turned a litter stringent with their visas offlate but not really sure if that applies for student visas as well. I really really hope u’d respond cos apart from my google searches, any more info is great info to me.
Thanks,
Asha

We wish we can write about UK, but for us to write about UK without knowing any details will not produce any contents of any value. IF we find any writers from UK, we will write about that for sure.

HSB and friends who care to visit this temple of learning
welcome you all
i have been searching in the google for the word
“Understanding Early Admissions Programs and Policies
How they benefit the prospective student and the school”
i want to record here my search lead me into many sites but honestly i am still not enlightened.

1)Early Decision — An option that allows you to apply early (usually in November) to your clear, first-choice college. You pledge to attend if accepted. If you’re a competitive candidate, you stand a statistically better chance to be admitted under Early Decision.

2)Early Action — Similar to Early Decision in timing (November due date for applications) but nonbinding. If accepted, you do not have to enroll and you may take until May 1 to decide. Early Action is fading in its popularity due to the move by colleges to seek an enrollment commitment from their applicants. Acceptance
percentage is higher than that of regular-decision pool

is there a possibility to find out this choice in the particular university in which the aspiring student aiming for.
can any one guide me to this terminology and
does this choice puts one in a advantageous position regarding admission in to the chosen university.

Please choose to voice and shine through your views,
you are welcome to care and share ,
here and now
use it or miss it,the choice is yours

2.public
3.private
4.Tier 1
5.Tier 4
etc
many knowledgeable and seniors who are well versed in this affair can enlighten on this topic.Since studying in USA Involves most Precious time and Money.
i do not want to land up my son or any of my country students in a unrecognized or some fly by night universities just for the sake of being in USA. Some of my country man will look an opportunity for being in USA for certain reasons. My utmost reason is good education, which will help the aspiring student to be at the top of his knowledge circle, and contribute to the society at large.

yes i just chcked up the USC website
the fees are quite high, us $ 55,340
a huge one. i would suggest you to become a paid premium club membership and get the best information.refer.http://www.myhappyschoolsblog.com/
this is my personal suggestion to you.
you will benefit for a small payment compared to the huge cost that now you are paying at USC,
